It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders. We believe that the KCTMO are an evil, unprincipled, mini-mafia who have no business to be charged with the responsibility of looking after the every day management of large scale social housing estates and that their sordid collusion with the RBKC Council is a recipe for a future major disaster. Unfortunately, the Grenfell Action Group have reached the conclusion that only an incident that results in serious loss of life of KCTMO residents will allow the external scrutiny to occur that will shine a light on the practices that characterise the malign governance of this non-functioning organisation. We believe that the KCTMO have ensured their ongoing survival by the use of proxy votes at their Annual General Meeting that see them returned with a mandate of 98% in favour of the continuation of their inept and highly dangerous management of our homes. It is no coincidence that the 98% is the same figure that is returned by the infamous Kim Jong-un of North Korea who claims mass popularity while reputedly enslaving the general population and starving the majority of his people to death. It is our conviction that a serious fire in a tower block or similar high density residential property is the most likely reason that those who wield power at the KCTMO will be found out and brought to justice! The Grenfell Action Group believe that the KCTMO narrowly averted a major fire disaster at Grenfell Tower in 2013 when residents experienced a period of terrifying power surges that were subsequently found to have been caused by faulty wiring. We believe that our attempts to highlight the seriousness of this event were covered up by the KCTMO with the help of the RBKC Scrutiny Committee who refused to investigate the legitimate concerns of tenants and leaseholders. We have blogged many times on the subject of fire safety at Grenfell Tower and we believe that these investigations will become part of damning evidence of the poor safety record of the KCTMO should a fire affect any other of their properties and cause the loss of life that we are predicting: https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2013/01/28/fire-safety-scandal-at-lancaster-west/ https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/more-on-fire-safety/ https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2013/02/21/another-fire-safety-scandal/ https://grenfellactiongroup.wordpress.com/2016/01/24/grenfell-tower-still-a-fire-risk/ In October 2015 a fire ripped through another KCTMO property, the 14 storey Adair Tower in North Kensington, causing mass panic and resulting in a number of residents taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. It is reported that had it not been for the swift actions of the London Fire Brigade the consequences of this fire and potential loss of life could have been much worse. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11967592/50-rescued-from-burning-flats-in-Kensington.html In the aftermath of the Adair Tower fire the London Fire Brigade found that the KCTMO had not been looking after the safety of residents properly and issued an Enforcement Order compelling them to improve the fire safety in the escape staircases and to provide self closing devices to all the tower block’s front doors. A further audit by the London Fire Brigade of the neighbouring Hazelwood Tower (located alongside Adair Tower) found similar breaches of health and safety legislation and an Enforcement Order was also issued for this property forcing the TMO to address the serious concerns of the Fire Brigade’s inspectors. What is shocking is that a decade ago a fatality occurred due to a fire at Hazelwood Tower and the Fire Investigation Team ordered that the grills on the fire escape staircase be covered over. This never happened and it is believed that the uncovered grills at Adair House (Hazelwood Tower’s twin block) acted like a chimney and were responsible for the accelerated spread of the fire and smoke damage. In the last twenty years and despite the terrifying power surge incident in 2013 and recent fire at Adair Tower, the residents of Grenfell Tower have received no proper fire safety instructions from the KCTMO. Residents were informed by a temporary notice stuck in the lift and one announcement in a recent regeneration newsletter that they should remain in their flats in the event of fire. There are not and never have been any instructions posted in the Grenfell Tower noticeboard or on individual floor as to how residents should act in event of a fire. Anyone who witnessed the recent tower block fire at Shepherds Court, in nearby Shepherd’s Bush, will know that the advice to remain in our properties would have led to certain fatalities and we are calling on our landlord to re-consider the advice that they have so badly circulated. The Grenfell Action Group predict that it won’t be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the heath and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can’t say that they haven’t been warned! With the document trail I wonder if the building management could be liable for manslaughter (as they may have neglected their duty of care)??? Will depend on findings (if the cladding was the main issue then the contractor could be in for a lot of trouble as you'd imagine they would have to be of a certain fire retardant level). It makes me think that building standards are considerably lower in the UK than Australia.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-06-15/london-tower-fire-promps-fears-nsw-buildings-could-be-tinderbox/8622470London tower fire: NSW documents reveal thousands of buildings could have cladding issueUpdated State Government documents have warned up to 2,500 buildings in New South Wales could be fitted with flammable cladding similar to that which was engulfed in the London Grenfell Tower fire this week. In the September 2015 document obtained under Freedom of Information by the NSW Opposition — marked "in confidence" — the Department of Planning and Environment states the potential number of building affected by combustible cladding could be between 1,500 to 2,500. Cladding materials have been in the spotlight since a 2014 Lacrosse building fire in Melbourne, and Wednesday's dramatic London blaze, in which 17 people died. Today the NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Troy Grant, could not be exact about the number of buildings fitted with potentially dangerous panels.

The dude who stole a poster from North Korea died this morning. Came home 17 months into a persistent vegetative state. Only a matter of time before Pyongyang is turned into glass.

Religion of peace 'Hero' imam praises group that saved Finsbury Park suspect from angry crowdMohammed Mahmoud was among men who flagged down police van to ensure mosque attack suspect was not seriously harmed In the chaos and terror of the moment, events might have taken an even darker turn. Outside the Muslim Welfare Centre, three men wrestled to the ground the driver of a van which had ploughed into people leaving the mosque. Amid confusion, distress and anger, a crowd gathered. Fists and feet struck out. Suddenly a voice shouted: “No one touch him – no one! No one!” It came from Mohammed Mahmoud, the mosque’s imam, later hailed as the hero of the day. He urged the crowd to be calm and restrained until the police arrived. Speaking to reporters on Monday afternoon, Mahmoud said he had not been the only one urging restraint. “It wasn’t me alone, there were a group of brothers. They were calm and collected and managed to calm people down and to extinguish any flames of anger or mob rule that would have taken charge had this group of mature brothers not stepped in.” He said he had just finished leading prayers in the mosque when “a brother came in, quite panicked, and said that somebody had run over a group of people and tried to kill them”. He added: “We arrived at the scene within minutes and we found the assailant on the floor. He had been restrained by around three people. “We found a group of people quickly started to collect around the assailant. And some tried to hit him, either kicks or punches. By God’s grace we manage to surround him and to protect him from any harm. We stopped all forms of attack and abuse towards him that were coming from every angle. “A police van drove past so we flagged them down and we told them the situation. There’s a man, he’s restrained. He mowed down a group of people and there’s a mob attempting to hurt him. If you don’t take him, God forbid he might be seriously hurt.” He added: “There was a mob attempt to hurt him, so we pushed people away from him until he was safely taken by police.” The man was unscathed, he said. He added: “This community of ours is a calm community, not known for their violence. Our mosques are incredibly peaceful. I can assure you we will do our utmost to calm down ill intentions.” In a statement Toufik Kacimi, the mosque and welfare centre’s chief executive, praised Mahmoud’s bravery and courage, which he said “helped calm the immediate situation after the incident and prevented further injuries and potential loss of life”. He later said he was “the hero of the day”. Mahmoud had told him that others had helped to calm people down. “The crowd was extremely angry, unhappy, so some people started acting violently too,” said Kacimi. One of the men who held the suspect on the ground, 29-year-old cafe owner Mohammed, said: “The imam came from the mosque and he said, ‘Listen, we are fasting, this is Ramadan, we are not supposed to do these kinds of things, so please step back.’ “For that reason this guy is still alive today. This is the only reason. If the imam was not there, he wouldn’t be there today.” Adil Rana, 24, who was outside the mosque when the van drove towards the crowd, said some people had initially attacked the suspect. “The driver jumped out and then he was pinned down to the floor and people were punching him and beating him, which was reasonable because of what he’s done. And then the imam of the mosque actually came out and said, ‘Don’t hit him, hand him over to the police, pin him down.’” Hussain Ali, 28, said: “The leader of the mosque said, ‘you do not touch him’.” The three men, who were sitting outside a cafe at the time of the incident, described their effort to subdue the suspected attacker and his reaction. “There was no regret, no emotion, he was just there smiling and blowing kisses. He said, ‘I’ve done what I’m supposed to do,’” said Mohammed. Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, praised Mahmoud’s actions. “When things were getting very heated, and we can understand why, Imam Mohammed did a really good job in calming things down and making sure that justice can be done as it should be done via due process, rather than anyone taking the law into their own hands,” he told Sky News. “This is a good community. They pull together, they work closely with each other and the actions of Imam Mohammed are what I would expect from a good faith leader and a good Muslim leader.” Mahmoud condemned the “tragic and barbaric terrorist attack”, adding: “All life is sacred.” He hoped those who try to demonise the Muslim community and to divide the country would not win. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jun/19/imam-praised-for-protecting-finsbury-park-suspect-from-crowdAmazing restraint really. It would have been so tempting to kick this guys head in.

Britain is to ban all new petrol and diesel cars and vans from 2040 (which is similar to what France has already done). https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/jul/25/britain-to-ban-sale-of-all-diesel-and-petrol-cars-and-vans-from-2040Looks like 2040 might be the year that other countries might adopt for the industry to change. I would imagine Germany and Japan would jump on this band wagon soon ... Australia won't do anything this drastic with the current government (not sure a Labor government would be that progressive thinking either). Great idea and long overdue (will drive the industry to innovate a lot quicker and push out the infrastructure better / wider).

This mess in Charlottesville, Virginia is a disgrace.
Whilst I absolutely denounce the acts of the killer as domestic terrorism, why on earth would the city grant two extreme groups permits to protest on the same day?
Can they ever have a peaceful protest again?
When in the USA, I saw one in North Carolina and no one seemed to care about the neo-nazis waving confederate flags. However, add ANTIFA to the mix and you have a massive problem.

As far as I am aware both were granted permit. My understanding is that the right-wing permit was revoked until a rights lobby group got involved under the premise of freedom of speech thus having the right wing permit reinstated.

Yeah not sure what they've got against a stark raving mad, narcissistic, megalomaniacal, hypocritical, short-tempered, ADHD, man-child of a president. (Who also happens to have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world.) It's a mystery all right.
