Brisbane Roar's ALDI MiniRoos school initiative

Wednesday, 23 August 2017 -

Brisbane Roar have taken ALDI MiniRoos football to one of the most remote parts of Australia.

The Roar’s Active Program Coach Andy Cosier needed two flights to travel the 2200km from Brisbane to run a Sporting Schools initiative at Doomadgee State School.
The Far North West Queensland school is an hour’s flight from Mount Isa and the 300 pupils are predominantly from the Gangalidda, Garrawa and Waanyi first peoples of Australia.

Cosier ran football clinics for the kids using ALDI MiniRoos balls with many of the pupils turning up barefoot to play.

School Principle Paula Mcguire said: “The students, staff and the community of Doomadgee were delighted with the success of the program and the levels of engagement shown by all involved.

“The energy, commitment and positivity Andy brought to the program was fantastic providing us with a great platform to really push the soccer program at Doomadgee.

“It has been wonderful to see our students engage in a new sport and one that is not commonly played in this community.”

Roar and Football Federation Australia left gifts of balls, boots and shirts for the children to use in their PE sessions.

Cosier added: “The Sporting school initiative to get kids active in sports like football has been a great success.
“Getting it out to remote areas, has been difficult but I had a chance to get the beautiful game out to one of the remotest places in Queensland.

“This was an exciting experience and the children all really enjoyed themselves.” Brisbane Roar are one of the Hyundai A-League clubs offering schools the opportunity to provide a structured football program that is run by their own highly skilled coaches.

Gary Wilkins Medalist Corey Brown says expectations are driving his team to improve as Brisbane Roar FC face the Chinese U-22 Olympic national side on Monday, 28 August at Cbus Super Stadium.

Brisbane head into their fourth match of pre-season against the Asian opponents following clashes with Lions FC, Peninsular Power FC, Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Monday's game on the Gold Coast (7:30 pm KO) is another opportunity for John Aloisi's side to get more valuable match practice ahead of the blockbuster Hyundai A-League season opener against Melbourne City on Friday, 6 October at AAMI Park.

Brisbane Roar’s 2016/17 Player of the Season says having high expectations heading into the new season are motivating factors for every squad member. “You start every year as a team with expectations to win trophies and personally I believe you have to have those expectations of yourself to have a good year and always improve,” Brown said.

“We’re working on something that’s bigger than pre-season friendlies. "These games are important and nobody wants to lose in the manner we have, but we’re working hard and trying new things.

"There is confidence within the group that once it clicks we will start to produce the positive results we are after.”
A limited number of tickets are still available for Monday's match. Free Entry HERE!

The Roar are lining up against a side that is in good form on Monday night, with the U-22 Chinese national team coming off a huge win against rivals Japan in an AFC Qualifying match.

“Whenever you come up against a national side at any age, you expect to face high-quality opposition," Brown added.

"It will be a solid test. We're ready to take on a team that will be technically very strong no doubt. “The Chinese people are passionate about football and as a nation they are starting to put plenty of resources into their national sides."

“It’s always good to play in front of passionate Queensland crowds so hopefully down at the Gold Coast we get some new faces come and support us and we can convert them into Roar fans by putting in a good performance.”

BRFC 2017/18 members and fans of football are invited to attend the match for free. Gates will open at 6:30 pm with the contest kicking off at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are limited and will not be available at the venue on the day. Free Entry HERE.

Brisbane beat Chinese u22.It looks like the 3 at the back experiment was put on the back burner with four at the back last night.
4231 was the formation it appears with McKay and Oxborrow the DM's.
Anyone at the game?
Still worrying that three of the injury prone older players(BKF,Kristensen and Avram P) still havent played one game preseason game and Gameiro has been absent for a while.Add to that no Bowles either.
That's five first team regulars who look like being problems.
On the bright side ,if you are a youngster you should be trialling at Roar now.
Add to that Skapetis is our form player.

@ crimson

I was at the game. Don't know where marco got 4 at the back as Roar definitely played 3 at the back (Hingert, DeVere, North) with 4 in front. And it worked well. It was as clear as day - you looked across the park and there was three at the back which slid across beautifully when needed. So Aloisi is getting on top of the back 3 thing and brown in particular seems to be enjoying his new role.

Other than that: there was a crowd of about 4,000, about 50/50 Roar/Chinese supporters, there was Chinese advertising everywhere, the game was broadcast live in to china, and the Chinese Ambassador was there ... oh, and these Chinese kids expected to win and played like it was a cup final and they needed to win lol.

I think they picked up six yellow cards, plus the red which was for a second yellow. At least 4 times there were mass scuffles started by the Chinese which was even more bizarre as each time it happened a coach from the Chinese bench sprinted on to the field and joined in, or maybe sorted it out, who knows? But that sums up their attitude.

Roar defensively ✔️ despite a soft goal and a back 3

Roar looked fit and no one was pulling out of tackles. I'd expect they'll have picked up a few knocks today tho as a lot of the tackles were aggressive, hard and often from behind.

Skapetis looks good, really good. Maccarone though average at best - he just didn't seem to get into the game although we won and scored the penalty. He was about the only concern player wise as all the rest seem to be making good progress.

Roar created enough chances but not enough for the amount of possession they had - often too slow transitioning through midfield to attack (familiar problem right) but my guess is all the training has been spent on fixing the back.

A better measure of progress will come Friday night in Ballarat I recon.

@ footballkingz

Yeah Big Mac played the full 90 minutes. Looked okay but we need to accept he hasn't got the pace but he's smart.

I thought it was a cracking game, we talked in the car on the way down about what fans would think an acceptable score and it was all 4-0 or 5-0. None of us expevted the Chinese to be that good, and certainly not for them to be that fiesty.

There was a fair contingent of Chinese supporters there (2,000?) who were very vocal, like the Asian Cup. They boooo'd Hingert constantly towards the end of the game. It was surreal lol.

There are reports Dane Ingham was dropped from the All Whites squad because he was unfit?
Is this a reflection on fitness levels of Roar players at the moment or Has he been injured?Either way it's a bad reflection on the club and if true might explain recent poor results.

I heard "unfit" as opposed to "injured" as well, but only on social media.

I saw both the wanderers and Victory game and fitness wasn't the issue there, in both games we matched them.

But if there's any truth in that Aloisi is screwed fir an ACL season 😩 But I do remember talking with Riars old fitness coach (back in mulveys day and I can't remember his name) and he was saying that sides in the ACL bring players fitness up later in preseason because they often start later than other teams.

But if that's true about Ingham that's a worry, how unfit do you need to be to get sent home by the kiwis??

Defender Dane Ingham expelled from All Whites squad after arriving out of condition

Defender Dane Ingham has been sent home from All Whites camp after arriving out of shape.

Coach Anthony Hudson confirmed that the 18-year-old had turned up out of condition and has already left the squad.

"He was unfit, his body fat was high. We've given him a couple of fitness tests and he's not where we need him to be," Hudson told Newshub.

The Brisbane Roar back was called up to the national side earlier this year alongside his brother Jai, playing in the World Cup qualifiers against Fiji and all three of the All Whites' games at the Confederations Cup.

Hudson spoke of the importance of Ingham to the squad going forward, saying it was a difficult decision but one from which the teenager would take plenty of learnings.

"Young kids make mistakes, especially when they've only just turned professional. Unfortunately, he needs to learn, and he will learn.

"It was a very difficult conversation, I know he was upset and it's hard for him.

"I've told him he's a massive part of what we want to do. He's going to be back in here in no time and I know he's going to respond the right way."

Ingham has played on only three occasions for the Roar but made an immediate impact, netting a goal in his second game to become the fourth youngest goal-scorer in A-league history.

The additional squad depth is something Hudson says has enabled him to make such cuts, admitting he would have had to "bite the bullet" if the same incident had occurred in previous years.

"I've been wanting to make these decisions two-and-a-half, three years ago. Now we have the squad," said the Englishman.

The All Whites will play the Solomon Islands on Friday in the first of two World Cup qualifiers.

Roar excuse

NZ reject Roar's criticism of Ingham axing

NZ soccer coach Anthony Hudson has defended his dismissal of Brisbane's Dane Ingham (L) from camp.

NZ soccer coach Anthony Hudson has defended his dismissal of Brisbane's Dane Ingham (L) from camp.

New Zealand boss Anthony Hudson has brushed aside criticism from A-League club Brisbane, who believe Dane Ingham's dismissal from this week's pre-World Cup qualifier camp has been handled poorly.

Ingham, a four-cap fullback who made his international debut in March, was sent home this week by Hudson for arriving at camp out of shape.

Midfielders Clayton Lewis and Bill Tuiloma had earlier been omitted from the Kiwi World Cup qualifier squad for the same reason.

"He was unfit - his body fat was high. We've given him a couple of fitness tests and he's not where he needs to be," Hudson said on Tuesday.

Yet the Roar, for whom the 18-year-old Ingham plies his trade in the A-League, were left bemused by their player's All Whites axing.

They said Ingham was left shattered by the experience.

"I don't think it was good, the way the situation was handled," ex-Socceroo and Roar football director Craig Moore told News Corp Australia.

"We were never given any guidelines by the New Zealand Football Association about the level of fitness Dane was expected to be at."

Hudson on Thursday rejected Moore's criticism, saying Ingham knew what standards were required in the All Whites' environment.

He didn't need the Roar's support to meet those standards.

"I don't manage Brisbane Roar - I speak about this team," Hudson said.

"The players, everyone in the squad was very clear on the expectations of where they needed to be at. Everyone's responsible and Dane falls into the same category as everyone else - it's not my business what clubs do."

The All Whites will play the Solomon Islands on Friday in Albany and then four days later in Honiara, with the victor to take on South America's fifth-placed side for a spot in next year's World Cup in Russia.

Hudson said Ingham was likely to return to the All Whites' fold in the future.
