I am afraid Aloisi is going down the stubborn Ange road.He will be driven with the ideal of the system ,eventhough it leads to mistakes and goals conceded.
That three at the back is so vulnerable to fast wingers,like Japan showed.For Roar even with four at the back we are vulnerable to fast wingers.Hingert and Brown are not good defensively one on one,like most HAL fullbacks.
This preseason is reminding me so much of the Mulvey preseason before his sacking.Very poor preseason form against HAL teams.Seriously we are conceding more than three a game. Surely sort defence out first.

Both Ange and Aloisi are stubborn but the Socceroos surely proved the folly of sticking with the wrong system that alone should be enough of a message to Aloisi never mind the results?

Again last night it looks like a couple of goals in quick succession (2 in four minutes ffs), it was 3 in 12 minutes v Wanderers and 2 in 2 minutes in the Cup. That's not a coincidence.

Not pretty.Caletti not doing any defending on two occasions,just jogging, thus allowing crosses and Brown not tracking his man,apart from other mistakes by North not tracking Berisha,Hingert allowing a cross and someone else maybe skapetis allowing a through ball.
It's hard to take comfort from any of that,no matter what system.
The space given to Berisha though was crazy.

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi happy with performance against Melbourne Victory despite slow start

BRISBANE Roar coach John Aloisi says being forced to travel on the day of the game was the decisive factor in his side’s latest pre-season defeat.

The Roar were beaten 3-1 by Melbourne Victory in Ballarat on Friday night.

Despite the loss, Aloisi described the performance – apart from the first 15 minutes – as his side’s best of the pre-season.

The Victory jumped to an early 2-0 lead, which Aloisi put down to his players being stiff from their long day.

The Roar didn’t arrive in Ballarat until early Friday afternoon, having spent the morning on a 2hr15min plane flight from Brisbane to Melbourne and then a 1hr45min bus trip to the inland Victorian city.

“The players said how stiff they felt at the start of the game,” Aloisi said.

“We thought an extended warm-up might help, but that’s why we had such a slow start and why the Victory got the jump on us.

“Otherwise we played really well. We created about six or seven clear chances. It’s the best we’ve played so far in the pre-season.”

Aloisi wanted to travel the day before the game but the club knocked his request back, seemingly for financial reasons.

That was despite Ballarat Council having paid for the Roar’s flights and their Friday night accommodation.

Peter Skapetis continued his good pre-season form with another goal for the Roar, whose side was again missing former Victory star Fahid Ben Khalfallah, key defender Avraam Papadopoulos, midfield enforcer Thomas Kristensen, and ex-Sydney FC and Melbourne City attacker Corey Gameiro.


Besart Berisha scored twice for the Victory, with Jai Ingham also finding the back of the net for the winners.

The Roar continue their pre-season campaign next Saturday against NPL Queensland side Olympic at Goodwin Park.

Looks like we got a good Borello replacement in skapetis. 

I have this vain hope we will click and we will destroy all. Unlike the Socceroos, I am more open to a club side experimenting to a point. I know we can always go back to a 433. But just don't want to be 5 rounds in with no points and a failed experiment.

It's always been brought up in the past the Roar should try a back 3. But that was at our height of Roar power. 

An interesting discussion with Fozz after the Soccerros loss highlighted how in the HAL coaches tend to have a system and stick with it,but overseas coaches have multiple systems and change mid game.Ange also having this rigid philosphy,giving opponents the opportunity to devise a plan,which Japan did very well.
He said as a coach himself ,it was most difficult coming up against teams which changed systems,because it complicated everything.

Aloisi talks about changing formation/system during a game but I'm not sure he/the team have ever pulled it off. But agree that's the way to go.

Heard a (second hand) explanation about Roars "Back 3" from someone talking to Ross recently - apparently it's a "back 4" only with Corey Brown pushing forward a lot ... now that to me sounds like a back 3 then lol?? Whatever is going on at the back it needs sorting; JA was in the media blaming the travel for the two early goals missing the fundamental point that this was the third consecutive game v HAL opponents where they'd shipped rapid goals

If the travel was an issue,it shouldn't be.
If my recollection is correct,Roar have a very poor away record with Aloisi in charge.I worry when I hear coaches complaining about travel.They should be instilling a winning mentality in players not a defeatest attitude.Yes travel is difficult but it's a challenge that should make players better.They should be approaching away games with intent to win.That's the coaches job.
You wont win anything unless you can win away games.So it makes more sense for Aloisi to organise many preseason away games to toughen players up.

When Aloisi arrived he said he wanted to turn Suncorp into a Fortress and everyone laughed, well he's done that and Roars home winning record is outstanding. Away from home is sub-standard and as you say, he can't let excuses get in the way - just sort it out John

I thought Skapetis looked pretty good. If anything stood out it was probably lack of chemistry with guys next to each other. Maccarone had a very good chance in the 2nd which would have levelled it at 2-2 and Victory scored after that.

Skapetis has looked good all preseason, gone from the A league this time next year. Possibly back to Stoke City.

What did you recon to Maccarone overall?

Ran the game out for a guy his age. Looks in fair shape all up. Don't think he'll be a threat in the air but not sure if he ever has been. Would have to ask Empoli/Siena fans that I'd suppose. If Roar work out that first pass as they enter the front third this guy and Holman will have some fun.

I didn't know anything about Maccarone before he arrived do did some digging on Boro's supporters pages - apart from being absolutely worshipped and loved by them the feedback was all positive but that he's not a physical player up for a scrap. A goal every three games seems to come from good old fashioned poaching, knowing where to be at the right time, and a wicked range of passing. He was said to be very fit but not one to waste energy on a lost cause

The partnership with Holman is crucial and its noticeable in the trial games the two are often playing together in the front three - and in the Victory Cup game and WSW closed door game, with the score 0-0, Maccarone combined well to set Holman up beautifully one on one with the keeper burin both occasions the respective keepers made great saves - more of that and with Skapetis in the mix and goals should (hopefully) come.

Roar to play SFC away in pre-season. Can't say that JA is shying away from a challenge:
