Heidelberg players would ordinarily be battling Mad Monday hangovers this week after they were defeated 2-1 in extra time by Bentleigh Greens in Sunday's state-league decider. Instead, they must dust themselves off and go again in Wednesday night's FFA Cup quarter-final at Olympic Village, where a crowd of around 5000 is expected. The Bergers have already beaten one A-League team, Perth Glory, this year and no NPL team has ever done it twice in the same FFA Cup run. Nor has a team from outside the A-League ever made the semi-finals without assistance from the tournament's manufactured draw. Katsidis is hopeful the lure of history and a boisterous home crowd can help his players squeeze out one more quality performance from what has been a terrific season. But he has his doubts. "To be honest I think mentally, they're just a little bit drained at the moment," Katsidis told AAP. "I'm not one to make excuses. "It's just that for semi-professionals to get up for so many games per week - let alone per year, I think this will be our 43rd game for the year. It's just way too many. "It's my job now to get them up more mentally than physically, to be honest. "You would say that coming up against an A-League team, the excitement of beating Perth Glory ... it should be easy enough, but who knows? They're only semi-pros. "As long as there's two teams on the pitch there's a 50-50 chance." Heidelberg's long season still won't be done if they lose, with an away trip to face Perth side Bayswater City in the Australian NPL finals coming next week. The former NSL club's best hope of FFA Cup survival would be catching Adelaide on an off day. But the new-look Reds are nearing the end of an unbeaten pre-season under new coach Marco Kurz, including wins against three different A-League opponents.
