"You couldn't really do it as such at the moment but I'm sure five or six years down the line the Australian football landscape will be larger, the A-League will be bigger and there'll be more franchise teams."

He has a family to feed. HAL is a cushy number for the rest of his career as long as he doesn't get relegated. Roundabout gif

No one is expecting pro rel to happen immediately. Gotta put in that proven Div 2 pathway before we can even consider it.

The a league needs to get to atleast 14 clubs then second tier maybe 10 teams would be ideal to start.

I agree the A League isn't ready to deal with promotion and relegation. But Australia is ready and O'Donovan you need a dose of REALITY.

We can determine the number after we install pro rel. This doesn't even make any sense. What Australian football needs immediately is more professional sides. Expanding the A-League needs to be the first step.

He doesn't get it A lot of the problems he is describing are symptoms of the current broken model Without low cost clubs there is no expansion Having low cost clubs in a single tier creates a split competition - which funnily enough is what we have now that CCM, NCJ and WP have fallen off pace For the A League to expand we must include low cost clubs because there are no $6m-$7m franchise options out there and the TV deal cant support it And for this to work we must have P/R otherwise the teams at the top will want to cut the deadweight that continuously absorbs 30%-40% of the funds but contributes nothing And if we have P/R we must scrap the salary cap otherwise teams will have no means of protecting their investment When there is a football model out there that is used by every single fucking professional league except for 2 - there is a small chance it is worth looking into Otherwise we wont get anywhere. Not 5 years from now. Not the magical "at least 10 years". No change, no progress

There will be a bigger amount of teams playing for nothing on a comfortable wage.

"Right now, obviously it's nowhere near being able to do that. With 10 teams and being a salary cap the difference between NPL and state league level, the gap is too big really with the teams and the foreigners the A-League clubs can sign with the salary cap, not even including marquees.
So his reason for thinking we're not ready for promotion & relegation is that there is a salary cap and the difference between NPL and A-League level is too big.
Which is pretty much what everyone advocating for pro/rel is also saying. Pro/Rel is part of a wider change that includes the scrapping of the salary cap and a national 2nd div. He's not made any new arguments that haven't been addressed here already.

@Davide82
The problem is to even get that minimal change, the FFA have to act proactively. They have been asleep at the wheel for so long, even that may be beyond them.

I totally agree but that's not really why I enjoyed that comment. If I was Timmy'sStalkerClivesnorejbddbdh I would have just posted a popcorn eating gif

Happy to be proven wrong but a 2nd Div with nowhere to go will likely begin with a small bang then start withering on the vine. As soon as that happens, Cold feet brigade will postpone P&R and the Death Spiral guaranteed
