+x12 months ago that Sydney FC crowd on a Sunday night vs Wellington would been 8000-8500 at best. Progress... Great numbers at Newcastle too, they saw a decent game, hopefully a few of those on free tix come back, they've got a decent side to watch this year 8k? Have we lowered our standards that far? In that case anything is progress. FMD

I reckon over 11k on a Sunday night at 7pm vs Wellington is a pass mark don't you? History shows it could've been much worse...

This is a bit distorted, considering we haven't had the Sydney Derby yet. Wait until next week, we'll be level if not better than last year.

+xThis is a bit distorted, considering we haven't had the Sydney Derby yet. Wait until next week, we'll be level if not better than last year. No way. There's at least an extra 20k in that Sydney Derby at Homebush. Averaged across 3 rounds we would need to make up 1500 a game on that alone. At this stage medians are more useful. At this point last year it was 12999. This year 11847. Not looking good at this stage but it was to be expected. The brawling in administration is impacting upon the game at club and national level.

+xI heard Jets gave away 5k tickets true? It was well broadcasted that even before Round 1 we offered a "free" ticket promotion for this Perth game. And by "free" it came with a $5 "handling fee" to ticketjerks or whatever company we use now. Sunday arvo home games v Perth are notoriously horrendous in Newcastle, so I think it is a great start to the season. There seems to be a disparity in numbers, i've seen 14k and 16k quoted, so I have no idea how many actually went tbh. I would have been happy with anything more than 10k tbh. Hopefully we see consistent crowds this year. On-field results are helping, finally!

Victory /City's 35 000 plus was huge, as was 16 000 plus at the Jets. Roar's crowd was pretty good too.

Don't even bother looking at WSW attendance figures, they don't count while we are at spotless stadium. No one likes going there. I am not sure how these comparisons are being made but you need to compare games which are like for like. Our game against Perth historically was one of our best attendances, the Mariners match is Meh, no one cares. Having said that we do have a lot of squatters, that is people have bought memberships just so that they have priority when the new stadium opens. The whole dynamic has changed going to a WSW game, at Sydney Olympic Park it is just a graveyard while at Parramatta it is a more energetic and dynamic vibe in and around the stadium precinct, makes a huge difference to our numbers.

We are having a similar start to two seasons ago after the "brawling" with the PFA about the new CBA especially for the Matildas. I think we are a couple of thousand total attendance ahead of that at this stage. That season we ended up with the best last half of the season we have had with the current 10 clubs. It will be interesting to see if this season follows that or if the lower attendance carries right through the season.

Regarding WSW it makes a lot sense to WSW fans, but none to anybody outside Western Sydney. People like me get no HAL football at all. I attend every big NPL game here, any NPL game featuring mainland NPL teams in Cup games, and would love to have any HAL football played in Tassie. The new, temporary WSW stadium looks to have a very good playing surface. Regarding the calibre of opponents, CCM played some superb possession football against WSW. It was very easy on the eye for the neutral. WSW need a new head coach to replace Hayden Foxe pronto. He isn't capable of the cerebral thought processes required of a head coach in the HAL.

WSW also is disappointing unless you accept that people just aren't interested in going to a cricket ground that is more east than it is west.

I'd say WSW, Roar and even SFCs attendance was about right for the history of those fixtures.
The derby was down and Nix were up.
So predicting the rest of the season - were in for another flat year of attendances and not until the political infighting stops will that change.

Being a SFC fan, have no love for WSW whatsoever, but have to agree with RBB. Going to Parramatta as away supporter, you can see the city is alive, many WSW fans especially in all the restaurants & take away shops, also a smattering of SFS fans like myself, the local shopkeepers all decked out in WSW attire & you feel the buzz, that is just not in existence in Homebush, Spotless. Now for hardcore fans like you, RBB or me, this shouldn't matter, but some friends & family see the whole package, dinner, bar, atmosphere & football, as part of going to football.

If you look at rugby league in Sydney contrasted with the origin you will see similar numbers for attendances this is despite rugby dominating the media landscape in Sydney. I think Sydney fans like the "big occasion'. I would prefer to see Sydney play at a suburban ground when these type of games (non-Saturday, The Nix) are on to improve the spectacle on TV. This I hear is complex because of poor transport to grounds. 11,000 on a Sunday against the Nix is not bad and an improvement on past years.

So did they clear up the Newcastle crowd number in the end? It was confusing how the A-League's own website had different numbers in its match stats and writeup. Not to mention that meant diffetent media sources were quoting different numbers.

Yeah and the very small lil fact that last year there was a real marketing drive leading into the start of the season. And our golden boy was returning home so that boosted interest greatly in the initial weeks. Let's see where we stand half way through the season.

ROAR managing director Mark Kingsman has blamed the timeslot and Adelaide United’s alleged lack of drawing power for the disappointing attendance at the club’s first home game of the A-League season. Just 11,178 people watched at Suncorp Stadium as the Roar continued their ordinary start to the campaign with a 2-1 loss to the Reds last Friday night. The attendance, which would have been lower if not for more than 2500 free tickets being offered to a host of local clubs, was down on last season’s regular season home crowd average of 13,892. Kingsman admitted the club had to “work through” the problem to help ensure a bigger crowd on Sunday when the Roar are again at Suncorp Stadium against the visiting Newcastle Jets. “It’s a concern … (but) Sunday’s going to be better for us,” Kingsman said. “The (6.50pm) kick-off time is never easy on a Friday and no disrespect to Adelaide but if we would have had a Melbourne Victory or a Sydney, we would have had a bigger number there.”

These excuses are becoming pathetic.
Wrong time, wrong day, wrong team, school night bla bla
You all cant play MV or WSW Saturday night every week.
First home game of the season people should be turining up, AU WP whoever.

+xFirst home game of the season people should be turining up, AU WP whoever. Its not an excuse, its a fact. The FFA hasn't scheduled us with a single afternoon game to pull higher TV ratings, full well knowing late school-night kick-offs have had a negative effect on many Sydney-based sports teams including the Wanderers last season and NRL sides. You are deluding yourself if you don't think it has an impact.

Ange's stink is all over the socceroos and no-one really cares about the Phoenix. At both I was fighting to keep awake after a long day at work/weekend activities. The timeslots meant I was more worried about getting home to sleep than the actual matches.

The 11,284 fans in attendance at SFC was the lowest figure for a defending champion’s first home match of the season in A-League history, succeeding the previous mark of 12,106 Sydney FC also set in the 2010-11 season.
