Not enough clean air in Brisbane tonight.

It was always going to happen in Brisbane. They have being up the top for so long and then when it starts to go bad not as many fans turn up.

This is of course because they dont sell enough season tickets. Which somewhat forces or helps people attend games regardless.

Is it the stadiums fault or their sales team?

Selling memberships are important.

Mariners lash out at failure to produce crowd strategy

The Mariners and Adelaide played in front of empty stands
The Mariners and Adelaide played in front of empty stands

Central Coast chief executive Shaun Mielekamp has lashed out at Football Federation Australia, accusing it of failing to embrace a proper strategy that will help boost A-League attendances.

Mielekamp’s displeasure comes after the Mariners attracted just 5000 to Thursday night’s 2-1 loss to Adelaide United in Gosford.

The club was unhappy that it was forced to play on a night and timeslot that was unsuitable for their supporters and one the Mariners argued was against the best interests of the club and their fans.

Despite coming off a superb 2-0 win over defending champions Sydney FC last week, Central Coast were always going to struggle attracting a crowd for Thursday’s game given it kicked off at 7.50pm. Rain an hour before kick-off did not help matters.

“Whilst we are extremely proud of the 5000 fans who created an awesome atmosphere on Thursday night, the simple fact is that not only did the boys on the field deserve another 2000 fans but 2000 fans that we know of missed an excellent display of football from both teams,” Mielekamp said.

“Simply, the FFA has not yet truly embraced a ‘bums on seats strategy’ for the A-League which ensures that all the moving parts are headed in the same direction.

“When all the stakeholders in the game come together and appreciate that for our game to grow, full stadiums will play a huge part of what is an exciting future ahead.”

Mielekamp said he had “argued passionately” against being forced to play on that night but knew he was fighting a losing battle.

“This was the only fixture and timeslot, when it first came out, that I passionately expressed concern,” he told The Weekend Australian. “But I knew that I was in for a losing battle.

“It fell on deaf ears that we were seriously going to ask for parents to not only double up from last Friday night’s match (against Sydney) but to bring their kids on a rainy school night when the game finishes at almost 10pm.

“We are a family club and our core members are families. The decision flew in the face of what is best for the fans and members of our club.

“I look forward to the moment when the penny drops and instead of hiding behind processes and other priorities to make excuses as to why such a ridiculous fixture was scheduled.”

FFA has been scheduling Thursday night matches for several seasons now, mainly to suit television requirements.

However, they are poor drawing events in non-holiday periods while ratings are also low.

There are another five Thursday nights scheduled this season with Brisbane Roar having to play two of them, both against Perth Glory in round 12 and 17.

Newcastle (round 8) and Melbourne City (round 18) are the only other clubs who have to host games on Thursday nights.

A-League boss Greg O’Rourke defended FFA’s decision.

“The FFA does not have a standard Thursday night broadcast timeslot and only use this when the schedule does not allow an option on Friday, Saturday or Sunday,” O’Rourke said.

“Outside of summer school holidays and our Summer of Football promotions, there are only two Thursdays scheduled all season.

“Central Coast last night and the Newcastle Jets next Thursday.”

I think it is a pretty logical excuse Thursday night game in Gosford will attract less punters. Put it on a Saturday and you see double. As long as Fox govern timeslots this will keep happening.

I don't think anyone is doubting that the product is stale, but Thursday will always draw a lower crowd for most teams except Victory.

Reality is that we will need to play midweek if we are any chance of growing.

I agree, to be clear I never said there was anything wrong with mid week games just that we need to have real expectations of the crowds.

Agree & Agree...

However Reality is the Australian  Football market is hhhhhhmmmmmm not connecting with the professional game in Australia ... never has .... under any leadership group over the last maybe 80 years.... But the same playing base has connected to other codes ...

You talk of excuses I can name thousands over the years, from media ownership, quality of the league, wogs playing, poor media,... the new fix all is P & R and copy the world ...

I am arrogant enough to suggest the answer is staring us in the face and only two teams hhhmmmm maybe 3 professional Football teams over 80 years have understood its importance and made it work...

Perth Glory under Nick Tana who said connecting to your local associations and their park teams and their volunteers is where to go...The Northern Spirit copied this.... and years before KB United at Newcastle did the same...

Often the suggestion is  teams like South Melbourne, Sydney United that have grown the game... when the player base has been driven by the park teams their volunteers and regional associations..... the professional teams in Australia have done little to connect to the local park clubs nor the district / regional associations.

FFA need to expand as quickly as possible to 16 teams, create the structure for a second division and allow P & R to naturally evolve...

The professional game needs to connect to its player base and the volunteers  .... the how is the million dollar question .... IMO we should get Nick Tana in and say how did you do it ...

If you consider Sydney there are 200k registered players.  The number of players is growing by over 5k annually on average.  The churn of players is about 30k pa with an average playing life of about 6-7 years.  In the time of the A-League about 650k people have played the game in weekend club "competitions" and 90% of them have been in District Associations.  You can probably double the total figure if you include the players from the previous 30 years.  Thats the market in Sydney but you won't harvest it from only two A-League clubs because the city is too tribal for that.  Additionally every club in the elite SL/NPL/A-Ls must have a strong focus on helping kids to experiencing a life in football even including kids in neighbouring district clubs through small sponsorships or technical assistance.  Its part of their responsibility to the game.  It should be competing on the pitch but working together off the pitch to grow the influence of the game.

We are in total agreement .... the single and I repeat single issue is to determine the methods[s] and systems needed to connect the professional game to its player base... P & R is certainty part of the answer but IMO not the starting point ... P & R needs to evolve rather than be forced....

Its like we keep making the same mistakes with every leadership group we have put in charge for maybe 80 years .... the answer is the district / regional associations, their local park teams and their volunteers... The answer is not South Melbourne or Blacktown Demons ...

I honestly believe we can have the biggest sport in the country, multi divisions with P & R  inside 12 years if we connect to the base ..... as I said its the how too which is the big question and constant negativity and recycling old war wounds helps little..

Yes it would  have been bigger. The previous week against Sydney was a Friday - there would have another 2500 Mariners and probably an additional 1000-1500 Sydney fans if it had been Saturday
