@ Bohemia I got that figure off Ultimate A League which has now been updated to 24,706I don’t know where the FFA figure came from but there is no way that was a 20k crowd, that would see a third of the stadium empty, even the 22k figure seemed low looking at it on tv

22k seems about right to me, i think that'll be the correct figure.

24706. Well, that's interesting if Melbourne City got the exact same crowd as the corresponding fixture last season. Personally, ultimate aleague is a big no for me when collecting stats. They're unreliable and don't show their sources.

I only use the stats from either the HAL site, club source or a newspaper source. In this case, HAL says 20,787, HUN and ABC say 22,515. I'll go by the HAL figure. If they change it tomorrow (which happens time to time) I'll go with that.

edit - appears the match report on the MC website says 22,515. Not the first time the HAL site/club sites have carried two different figures.

Think that would have to be the worst derby crowd ever bar a midweek FFA cup fixture.
Just goes to show the league is in strife when combined 35k members = 22k spectators in the one City.

I’m sure the Renegades shat over a Melbourne derby too

Yeh it's cooked, when one of your 2 city derbies draws a north Melbourne crowd it doesn't bode well for the future.

Just on Roar crowds, it’s not as simple as people make out

The Suncorp average this season is 9,916 compared to 12,850 for the comparable home/away fixture list two years ago which is a drop of 2,934.

Overall A League crowds are down 808 this season so far vs the full season average 2 years ago, a like for like comparison after 12 rounds and they would probably be down 1,600.

That would put Brisbane crowds down around 1,300 above the overall systemic fall off in crowds.

And while we’re complaining about scheduling, midweek games, kick off times, weather I remember we had the same complaints two years ago as well.

With SFC at the top they averaged 16k two years ago and this season they are just under 15k, allowing for the systemic fall off (1,300) they’re probably holding up crowds better than most by comparison.

It’s obvious the kids go free & summer of football campaigns aren’t going to reverse a serious decline in crowds across the competition and, unless a marquee signing arrives in January, the competition overall will average around 10,500-11,000 by the seasons end leaving Roar with an average around the 9k mark or slightly less.

Awful in comparison to recent years but with all crowds down we’ll just be one of ten clubs that end up with falling crowds this season (even the jets are only just above their full season average of two years ago after 12 rounds).

So in analysing Roar crowds there’s three stages, how far as the competition fallen? How far have Roar crowds fallen beyond that? And the much bigger question of why have Roar been unable to crack the local market better than they have?

The first two questions are simple enough to answer, the competition is in strife so crowds are down and the teams not winning/playing poorly so crowds are down. Fix those and crowds go up.

The third one is key though - since Dobson left we’ve had 5 CEOs in 4 years, all incoming CEOs have thrown out existing plans and started again with “their plan” which, in a market absolutely obsessed with NRL, has meant zero cut through and no growth - we win and crowds go up slightly, we lose and crowds go down slightly. Meh.

Until someone stays around long enough and cracks that third question crowds won’t improve significantly.

We have fallen off a cliff when commentators are hyping a 9.8k crowd for a 2nd placed team as something spectacular. Under the current climate though it actually is very good. Jets picked a good season not to suck.

9.8k isn't bad for the region. I am not sure which metrics we should following if a regional center achieving this is not expected.

I'd say its pretty standard for a drop in crowds for any team that is not winning, no team is immune to a drop in crowds when they are not in great form, especially in a salary capped league with no relegation. Plus when you add in the league being stale for a while now, FFA circus, VAR shambles and the Aloisi bros and co circus it does all add up.

Not trying to make excuses for the poor attendances by Roar standards but I do congratulate those that do find the the effort to travel and watch a team that has lost its way since the Ange era.

I wouldn't exactly put it down to Roar not winning though, sure it sucks losing all the time but Id say its more to with the way they are losing, there is no cohesion, no style of play, then you have the poor recruiting, all the injuries through mismanagement and the Aloisi bros going down hill.

Roar have gone from having some of the best young and upcoming talents to a group mostly full of old timers who have no passion, hunger or just should never have gotten a contract in the first place.

I haven't been a member for 2 seasons now, I went to probably 4 or 5 matches last season, this season I have only been to one and I can't see any reason to go to anymore.

Even if Roar did manage to start winning again, it still would not make me want  to go to any games, I wont be back until there is a major clean out. I'm still very bitter over the way the club treated Broich as well.

uninspiring competition launch affected all clubs but Suncorp Stadium has been a barren ground this season, Roar's average attendance is nearly 40 per cent lower than by round 11 last year.http://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/aleague-stuck-in-the-doldrums-as-ratings-and-attendances-slump-20171222-h09dkv.htmlHave been saying this for years, Roar fans are used to winning and the first year it goes wrong will be a disaster. This is why season ticket sales are so important. Are Roar fans just bandwagon supporters? Only that the bandwagon was rolling for such a long time people thought it was a normal coach (mind the pun).

What about all the free kids ?

Closed HAL is failing with 10 teams
Closed HAL failed with 11
FFA forced to try a 12 team Closed HAL thatll just create 2 more mid table also-rans
and still this weird 16-team panacea gets trotted out.

I reckon its right. Surprised there were so many there. We were spread over the ground fairly evenly. We need a 15K to 20K stadium. Even the 7K who turned up last night would have looked reasonable.

@ City Sam I’m with you on the rubbish excuse bit but there’s no doubt midweek games draw low crowds. Out of all the excuses I listed only the KO time is a legitimate one. 6.50 is too early for some to make it and with the transport network set to outbound mode you miss one train/bus in and you can have a thirty minute wait which is the difference between just getting there in time for the kick off and missing a third of the game.

That's true, should be 7:30 for midweek games. But really the only excuse i agree about is the prices of tickets are way too high. Just comparing with the next big bash game in Melbourne, Adults can get tickets as cheap as $20, concession $15 with Juniors going for $5. Compare this with the derby this weekend in which the cheapest ticket available is $14 for juniors, $29 for concession and $35 for adult. That is significantly more expensive for something which lasts a significantly shorter time than the cricket.

Obviously far from the biggest issue but people who are on the fence of going or not get priced out.

@ Davo BBL is a massive success no doubt, mid week crowds are no problem even if they are over inflating last nights crowd. But Roar are forecasting 8k tonight and will likely get 6k and there will be many reasons for that:- football fans don’t like midweek games. - it’s a dumb 6.50 kick off which makes it harder to get there on time for kick off if you’re working- Roar played at home last on Sunday - 72 hours ago - it’s Roars 3rd home game in a row - after this, 2 out of the next 3 games are also at home - then add in form, injuries etc. And it’s easy to see what they’d struggle. The bigger question for Roar is why a trypicsl crowd is not 18k and this would be a “poor” 12k

Football fans do like midweek games, people here just use them as a rubbish excuse for bad attendances.

Apparently cricket fans don't need to shop before Christmas....
http://www.news.com.au/sport/football/a-league/aleague-brisbane-roar-unhappy-with-aleague-scheduling/news-story/3b501f2742af3639ac4c5041ff8a3461

So it's predicted 8k tonight at the game. To be honest the scheduling of games back to back is a concern and fits into line with one of my points I made further above about attendance fatigue. HOWEVER the ills of the game go way way beyond scheduling, and I think clubs like to throw that out there in order to lay the blame onto FFA. The FFA is to blame, but it's not scheduling that's the main issue. Yes it has an effect, but the reasons why they are getting 8k tonight is not entirely due to scheduling. In fact all kids are on holidays now and the ticket pricing is meant to be cheap as chips for kids. And if 27k can turn out on a week night in summer up the road the night before then clearly Thursday night football in this instance isn't the issue.

The FFA has to go so that an independent a-league/ individual clubs can then be responsible. Because they won't be able to lay the blame on FFA in the future.

BBL crowd of 27,500 last night? More like half of that apparently (14-15k).

Was anyone there? It’s a pretty easy stadium to guess attendance if you go regularly
