+x+xShocked by that result, the Uzbeks must have a strong generation coming through. There number 17 called Dostonbek Khamdamov is 21 and has played 89 first team games and has scored around 34 goals in the process, has one of the best u21 players in Asia right now, he's a gun. Uzbek have been strong at youth level for years but its never really translated into anything at senior level They were very close to making the world cup, but threw it away in the final 2 matches.

They seem to be decent generally. From what i have read this is a combination of the generation that won the Under 17 Asian Cup (and another generation just below them) they have been making the semi final or better at Asian level and knockout rounds at World Cup youth level. Quarter Finals at 2013 and 2015 Under 20 world cup. So i wasn't surprised they thumped Japan. Our results against them at youth level have regularly been poor Under 23 L 0-2 (2012) D 0-0 (20120 Under 19 L 1-2 (2012) D 1-1 (2014) L 2-3 (2016) Under 17 L 0-4 (2012) I feel they had a solid national team when they had a few players playing in Russia for top clubs with UCL/Europa League knockout round exposure. I guess we will see in a few years where they are at.

+x+x+xQatar 3:2 over Palestine. That's too bad. The Qatari bunch peaking well for 2022. Hope they draw Germany Argentina and Nigeria. They will be in pot 1

Korea and Vietnam through to the semis.
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

+x+xKorea and Vietnam through to the semis. more evidence our group was tough Vietnam played very well against Iraq. If this group of young boys stay together and graduate to the senior team, then I have high hopes Vietnam could win the next Asean Football Federation Cup (AFF Suzuki Cup) at the end of this year.

Made me smile. What a great moment for Vietnamese football. Hope to see them make the final stage of WC qualifying. We must be careful with Thailand and now Vietnam lifting.

With the likes of Vietnam and Thailand improving, ill be wary with the 2022 campaign.
Asian football is improving year by year, great to see.

+xMade me smile. What a great moment for Vietnamese football. Hope to see them make the final stage of WC qualifying. We must be careful with Thailand and now Vietnam lifting. Its hard to know at senior level. I think we will improve under a new manager. They have a big chance for 2026 when Asia goes to 9.5 spots. Even making the final of this comp boosts the countries morale. The AFF Suzuki Cup is at the end of the year. Australia should play in it but we dont because it would clash with the A-League. We need to send players to SE Asia away against hostile crowds. SE Asia, Chinaa dn ME will keep closing the gap on us. SK and Jap will remain strong. India will take longer.

We have a slight edge at senior level. I really think if we'd concentrated and adapted well we'd have beaten Thailand and Iraq. Messy campaign that must never happen again.

Absolutely wonderful celebrations on and off the pitch by the Vietnamese.
We shouldn't be worrying about the inexorable rise of South East Asia football; we should be joining with them and lifting together.

+xMy friends in Hanoi just sent me some live streams of the street celebrations... the people are ecstatic... most offices was allowed to take the afternoon off, to watch the game. That is how much football means to them. Vietnam were the under dogs against Syria, Australia, Iraq and Qatar,,, and they've left them all behind. Its a great story and they have over-achieved. I worked in Vietnam for 3 years, on nights like this when the national team wins such a crucial game,, the celebrations in Hanoi and Saigon are just amazing. Great stuff. How good is it when football people overcome Qatar.

Final is being held in the snow. Has Vietnam ever played (or seen) snow before?
Even more so, why are the Uzbeks wearing white in this game?

What weather! Uzbekistan lead 1:0 and in this snow it might just be enough. Hard to score. Keep fighting Vietnam.

Have a look at the highlights of the final, I had no idea it snowed so hard in this part of China. Congrats to Vietnam and especially Uzbekistan.

No reason why we couldn't at least trial a couple of Uzbeks/Veitnamese in the A-league. Start embracing our region a bit more.
