The strategy can work. You start a bloke for 35mins and tell him to go all out. Sub a good player on for 10 intensive minutes then they get a break and have enough for the full 2nd.

Kewell might be thankful for Popovic getting a yellow and elbowing a Uruguayan defender in the face.
