I agree. I'm not sure how many strikers are taken in a 23 man squad. But ideally, I'd go with Tim Cahill, Nikita Rukavytsa, Golgol Mehbrahtu and Tomi Juric. Four parts of a whole striker!

And I'd seriously consider playing just Rukya and Juric in the game against France with a view to drawing and attacking on the counter-attack, and keeping Cahill fresh for the matches we need to try to win.

This made me genuinely chuckle, and then I stopped and reflected and it made me genuinely sad. lol.

Agree @New Signing.
Leckie shines against top opposition.
I think it’s just the type of player he is with his pressing and good of the ball work, which doesn’t count for as much against weaker opposition.

Turning out to be quite a good move for Gersbach who could be marking neymar or mbappe in a few weeks.

Irvine certainly provides a physical advantage over a number of others with his height and aerial ability. Still not 100% sure of his best position for australia.

I'd be tempted to look at a midfield three of irvine, mooy and one of milligan and Jedinak against france just to offer our defence a little more protection. You can then look at outlets for speed on the counted of Arzani if picked, Juric is no slouch and as others have discussed possibly Ruka and obviously leckie and Kruse.

If we remember back leckies best ever game for australia was one in which we were being hammered by Germany but finding great opportunities on the break. I can see the game against France being very similar

Do you mean the friendly in Germany? I was there and Leckie broke the line so many times. He killed them. Interestingly it was the German  back 3 who struggled as the wing back never came back to cover Leckie. We played 433 with Burns Troisi and Leckie up front. It was great.

I liked our midfield in Honduras.

Jedinak
Luongo Irvine Mooy

Our midfield against Chile also went hard. That was Luongo Irvine Troisi with Cahill at 10 and Juric up front.

Evidently if the players just go hard then the opposition should get a bit of a shock.

My current Roos 11 would be

Ryan

Wright Sainsbury Wilkinson Behich
                Jedinak
            Luongo Mooy
 Leckie    Juric       Burns

Van Marwijk has a lot of experimenting to do.

Against France, I'd aim to draw. And to try to hurt them on the counterattack. Juric up front. Defensive midfield triangle with Mooy at the top of it, with Jedinak and Irvine as accompanying CDMs. When they become a bit more dynamic, Jedinak screens the defence and Irvine can push forward in more of a box-to-box role.

Leckie definitely starts. I'm unsure whether Kruse or Ruka is a better option for counter attacking on the other wing.

Keep Cahill and Arzani fresh for the two matches which we need to try to win.

Careful know, don't you know that playing pragmatically is literally un-Australian?

Pretty much my team at the moment, although I'd think about switching out Burns for Ruka/Kruse and maybe Wilkinson for someone with a bit more pace (Degenek, Williams). I can't wait to see Leckie in a purely attacking role instead of being forced to play as a quasi-right back.

Wilkinson too old. Wright in CB has been crazy good. Luongo has gone worse than backwards, he's stoof still for almost 3 entire seasons .
Burns you have got to be kidding me. Bugger this, there won't be much to go on in Russia. A lot of players will be in that team who are not playing enough football. The thinking of BVM I think will definitely confident he can have an attacking and defensive formation.

Predominately defensive (France game) w/ option to counter:
-----------------Ryan------------------
Milligan--Sains--Wright---Behich

Leckie----Mooy---Jedinak---Kruse

---------------------ryan--------------------------
-wright-----sains---jurman---behich-
----------------milligan----luongo----------
-------------------------mooy-------------------
---arzani---------rogic------leckie-------

Mid triangle can be roared with Dougall and Irvine options. Kruse or leckie are options on the left

My preference would be Luongo and Jedinak as the DM pairing - Luongo completes alot more tackles than Irvine - 4 per game vs. 1.7 per game on Who Scored.
Luongo also has a higher Pass Accuracy (70.3% vs 63.6%)

With that in mind (and current form) - I think we may see something like this:

Ryan
Wright | Sainsbury | Jurman | Behich
Jedinak | Luongo
Leckie | Mooy | Rukavytsya
Juric

Agree with 433. Offered very little on his failed return to the A league and looked slow and average when Ange played him for the Socceroos. One would have to question the Israeli League as Ruka continues to score there. Couldn't do it anywhere else. Beries scouting hopefully will find someone better

Could be more a mental/family thing.. maybe he's just got a happy wife now and it equals a happy football life haha.

Exactly the game i meant. It was one of the few times i saw our national team use leckie as he should be used. He is close to useless in the slow build up play we saw later in Ange's tenure

Yep, probably my favourite player ATM. Cannot understand why Ange didn't pick him. He cleans up so much for SFC, the best CB in the A League by miles, and of all positions, it is probably one of the keenest contests.

One thing that I recall about sains and spira was that their tackle success rate was phenomenal.

Sains made a lot of tackles for his position at over 80%
spira made fewer but his success rate was even higher around 90% amongst the highest I have seen in the a league.

Wilkinsons is only 60%. He also only has made 9 tackles all season which is less than either than them when they were here. Mind you the a league standard has lifted so it might be harder now.

Defense in the front line and midfield I think is all about generating turnovers no matter how many tackles you miss.
If you miss a tackle in the backline you can really stretch your team.

Thats not showing missed tackles though. Positioning for a defender and his ability to cut out passes and win headers is every bit as important as if he can make a tackle or not

Sainsbury and Wilkinson have a fair bit of history playing together, and complemented each other well in the Asian Cup.

I feel Wilkinson struggled to make Ange's team when he went to the three at the back. If BVM reverts to a back 4 he might get a look it. Saying that Jurman did nothing wrong on his recent games for the Socceroos.

Given the lack of game time for Sainsbury I wonder if it will weight against him in BVM's eyes??

No argument from me. That's the point i was making. While he may not have the tackling stats of Sains and Spira that does not in anyway mean he isnt every bit as an accomplished defender

Jurman! forgot about him. Would only make him a back up however. Wright & Sains are too good
