Power president David Koch fires back at Hawthorn counterpart Jeff Kennett saying the Hawks will one day embrace international money

PORT Adelaide president David Koch will have a face-to-face with Hawthorn counterpart Jeff Kennett tomorrow to fire back at the latest hit on his China dream.

And Koch will warn Kennett that as soon as a Chinese backer opts to sponsor the Hawks: “There will be an invoice from the Port Adelaide Football Club demanding a commission.”

Kennett on Tuesday labelled AFL international expansion - that includes a study trip by the Crows to India this week - as “an absolute waste of time and money”.

Kennett’s strategic statement - as he aims to stop the AFL pushing Hawthorn out of Tasmania to leave the island to North Melbourne - prompted Koch to immediately demand a meeting in Melbourne tomorrow when the 18 league club presidents meet at AFL House.

“I’m happy to sit down with Jeff to explain the big picture in China - and open his eyes,” said Koch. His invitation - by text message - has been accepted by Kennett.

But Koch is surprised the man who, as Victoria Premier, changed a state’s thinking to embrace international sporting events - such as the Formula One Grand Prix - would be so negative on taking Australian football to the world.

“Here is a man who brought the big events to Melbourne, yet he cannot see the big picture in sport today,” Koch told The Advertiser.

“That’s why I am really surprised at Jeff’s comments. I’ve always seen him as a lateral thinker.”

Kennett’s outburst on AFL international expansion follows the AFL last week announcing it was committed to follow Port Adelaide’s China dream in the “medium term” - at least the next five years. The second Power-Gold Coast game in Shanghai will be played for AFL premiership points in May.

At the same time, Adelaide, Greater Western Sydney, Richmond and Sydney have representatives in India this week with AFL international consultant David Stevenson to measure the game’s commercial prospects on the sub-continent.

Kennett blasted AFL international objectives saying: “It (Australian football) will never live in India, it will never live in China. It’s just an absolute waste of time and money.

“The AFL should be focused on what it does well and why it was established, which was to oversee the operation of the code here in Australia.”

The AFL’s major goal is to use its new short-form, seven-a-side game - AFLX on rectangular fields - to encourage major backing of the Australian game from Chinese television that is searching for new sports content and Chinese tycoons such as the Power’s major benefactor, Shanghai real estate billionaire Gui Guojie.

“And when that moment delivers a Chinese commercial partner to Hawthorn, I’ll be asking Jeff Kennett to pay the Port Adelaide Football Club a commission,” Koch told The Advertiser.

Of the multi-million dollar cost of the Shanghai game, Koch responded: “It is completely underwritten without AFL money - with new money to Australian football from China.”

Of Kennett’s “waste of time” jibe, Koch said: “If we want to remain a myopic game in Australia, we will never go any further nor flourish.

“China is Australia’s biggest trading partner - and sports diplomacy is a key pillar to building relationships between China and Australia. It connects two countries, two societies and two business sectors.

“That is why (Australian) Prime Minister Turnbull and (Chinese) Premier Li have been pivotal supporters of our China project - and are encouraging us to take it even further.”

Port demanding a commission? Maybe BHP and Rio should demand a commission from Port Adelaide for slapping their logo on already existing international trade deals.

I'm usually loath to agree w/Jeff Kennett on anything, but where this topic's concerned he's obv spot-on.

OTOH, Kochie demonstrates once again what an intellectual-pygmy he is.

and for all of Ports  noise about china... no one knows what the commercial benefits have been or will be ?

If the money was flowing in , why do they still need 7-8 million promised in grants from local candidates in the upcoming election to help build a " community centre " ?

Nick Xenephon , the anti pokies politician , tough on pokies etc etc... Yet port own a pub ( prince of wales ) and they have pokies...
Or is the line ... we reinvest that money into the community ?????

Kennet is right , China will never take to AFL.....

At the moment, there are two guaranteed ways of getting money out of all levels of government for your football club:
 - link it to women's sport
 - call it a community centre (which happens to house your state-of-the-art gym and is used by a professional football club 90% of the time)

or better still, put both in your business case.

Port Adelaide unveils major precinct development plans for Alberton

portdelaidefc.com.au  March 10, 2018 2:45 PM

A WORLD class,  multi-purpose training and sports science precinct planned for Alberton Oval could up and running by the time Port Adelaide Football Club celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2020.

The proposed development was announced today by Port Adelaide Chairman, David Koch and SA Premier Jay Weatherill at the JLT Cup pre-season match at Alberton Oval.

It includes:

• Construction of an Aboriginal Centre of Excellence
• A new high performance centre
• Development of a secondary training and rehabilitation field
• A new Port Club containing a visitor centre and museum
• Upgrades to the Fos Williams Family Stand.
• Development of a Premiership Walk at the entry to the oval and facilities

Facilities will include a new swimming pool, gymnasium and a function centre which will also be available to the local community, while spectator amenities at the ground will be upgraded.

Mr Koch said the development would give Port Adelaide an outstanding, leading edgetraining facility and provide a major boost to recreational facilities in the local community.

“Planning is now well advanced and we hope to be in a position to start work later this year,” he said.

“We have already commenced discussions with the local council and will begin community consultation in the next few days.”

Mr Koch said that as part of the development, Alberton Oval would be slightly realigned to enable vacant ground behind the oval to be incorporated into a secondary training field.

“The entire development will be contained within the current Alberton Oval precinct and is designed to set Port Adelaide up for ongoing success,” he said.

Mr Koch said a key component of the development was the Aboriginal Centre of Excellence designed to assist young Aboriginal people transition from high school to further education and the workforce.

“We have already received $4 million from the Federal Government towards the cost of the centre as well as today’s pre-election commitment from the Premier,” he said.

“The centre will be a key part of the redevelopment and is part of Port Adelaide’s long-term commitment to creating positive futures for Aboriginal children.”

Mr Koch said further announcements about funding for the development would be made later this year.

“We will keep our members and the local community fully updated throughout the process,” he said.

“This is an incredibly exciting step forward, not just for our club, but for the people in our community.

“Our vision for this precinct is for Alberton oval to be a dynamic representation of our club and the district as a whole – high performing, innovative, educational, socially engaging and community-centric.”

Port Adelaide has something I think no other club in AFL, NRL, A-League or Rugby has. They own their original IP (Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club SANFL). This isnt like eg the new Collingwood (netball), people know and love the PA ip.
Image result for collingwood magpies '
They seem to get money at will from the government. Why would you not set up a football team and either a) go for Chinese sponsorship and tie it together with Power or b) sell a minority or 50/50 share with terms to retain ip and so on.

They are in a prime position. They can even sell it to the government to build them a soccer field, which they can also use for AFLX. Its right in fron of them. AFL wouldnt be able to do shit. Im not sure if AFL has the ip for the PA Magpies bar/stripes design but you can get around that and they wouldnt be able to stop INXS either.

Some of the inspirational shit coming out of AFL HQ brings a tear to the eye

https://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/afl/mclachlan-concedes-there-are-problems-in-heartland-state/news-story/37406715d2192c44db11323161d1f8dd

McLachlan took centre stage last night after unveiling the AFL’s 2018 advertising campaign titled: “Don’t believe in Never”.

It features a girl of Muslim background named Dema, who managed to convince her parents to allow her to play for the Bankstown Bull Sharks after falling for the game during physical education classes at her school.

“You can see it in that video — Dema’s father getting addicted when he saw the game,” McLachlan said. “The tackling, the running, the kicking, the athleticism, the excitement, the passion. We can all relate to his reaction and we feel proud.

“He fell in love with our game because it is the best game to watch, the best team to be in, the best community to join.”

Other aspects of the campaign focus on Richmond’s remarkable resurgence and the career of Sudanese-born Swan Aliir Aliir.

Also a good bit of info there. We always laugh at the metric shit tonne of money being dropped on Gold Coast and GWS....... don't forget the Bad News Bears, 30 years after  establishing a presence in QLD  and they're under to the tune of 17.5 million. AFL fighting fires on 3 fronts. Would be 4 if they gave a damn about Tasmania.

Oh and "Sudanese born Allir Allir" ......... was born in Kenya. But that's ok. The old adage - when you're in a foreign place you can tell anybody you're anything. Like Setanta OHailpin who was used as the poster boy for AFL conquering Ireland when he was rookied at Carlton. Only for that same player to be wheeled out for GWS, as it apparently turned out that Irish guy was born in Western Sydney. And they kept it on the downlow that he wound up at GWS because of a slight incident at training where he belted the crap out of a team mate then kicked him in the junk when he was on the ground.

AFL fighting fires on 3 fronts. Would be 4 if they gave a damn about Tasmania.

But if Tasmanians were starting to feel like they were a League priority they were soon set straight.

"Our growth agenda is clear,” McLachlan said.

“Kids, women and families, New South Wales and Queensland.

......

Former Western Bulldogs, Sydney and Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade said Australian rules could be replaced as the dominant code in his former home state.

“We can’t afford to drop the ball in heartlands, whether it be country Victoria, suburban Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia or Tasmania,” Eade told SEN’s KB and The Doc show on Wednesday.

“It has been a fertile ground… If soccer get their act together and start to play A-League games over there consistently and even get a team, there are going to be some dire consequences for footy in Tasmania.

Marc Murphy ready to crash Richmond’s parade, backs radical 17-game season revamp

Ads by Kiosked

CARLTON captain Marc Murphy has endorsed a 17-round AFL season that follows an expanded AFLX competition in a radical revamp of the football calendar.

And Murphy says the mid-season trade period set to come in next year will be actually be a positive for players looking for fresh starts.

Murphy’s suggestion for a truncated AFL season similar to the NFL’s hugely successful format has always been shot down as unsuitable to broadcasters.

But he says if AFLX took off it could become a valuable enough property to compensate for less rounds of AFL football.

“Depending on who you play twice, it can impact whether you play finals (with 22 games),’’ Murphy told the Herald Sun.

“You could get 17 games if you work out the other format of AFLX and have a separate series of that.

Carlton captain Marc Murphy at the AFL captains day.

“Then you have 17 games with a few breaks through the year and the season is still as long. I am not exactly sure what it looks like but I reckon it will change down the track.

“I love the NFL and I think it would be perfect. Everyone plays each other once and I think it would be good for the game.”

McLachlan has long championed a 17-5 model where each team plays once before teams are split into three pools for the final five weeks.

But the league has never been able to find a strong incentive for the bottom pool to keep trying to win given their finals hopes are over.

It seems clear the AFL will institute a mid-season trade period next season, with new footy boss Steve Hocking shaping as a positive agent of change.

Richmond v Carlton AFL Round 1 Marc Murphy premiership flag, 17-game season, mid-season trade period | Herald Sun

More and more players will keep proposing this I think.

Michelangelo Rucci, Sports Editor At Large, The Advertiserast time in the SANFL this season.AFL plans to rapidly advance a national reserves competition — as soon as next year — would force the Port Adelaide Football Club to pack away the “Magpies” and the famous black-and-white prison-bar jumper worn since 1901.Port Adelaide would have to appear in the 18-team national reserves competition as the “Power” and with the club’s AFL colours of black, white, teal and silver. This is to avoid clashing with Victorian club Collingwood, who made in clear in 1990 — when Port Adelaide first attempted to be part of the national league — that the AFL could not have two clubs share the same black-and-white colours and Magpies nickname.SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson told The Advertiser his league had not been included in the wide-ranging briefings the AFL has had in the past week in Melbourne on its plans for a national reserves competition.

Not the slightest bit concerned. They kill off century old heartlands, cash in and lose it all on GWS, Gold Coast and the Brisbane Bears. Crumbling before our very eyes.

That was painful and hard to get through. Im not sure why they put the Eels car seat cover in. It was really tough but the end, ........ Image result for mat ryan whoo
