Damn, was that their first shot on target? It'll be huge if they came back this late.

So close, Matildas. Camped on the edge of Japan's box for the whole match it seemed, but Japan got the late goal.

Qualified for France but the team appears to be under delivering or is that just bad expectations?

Bad expectations. 6th in the world is not accurate imo.
Current rankings are..
USA-1 England-2 Germany-3 Canada-4 France-5 Australia-6 Netherlands-7 Brazil-8 Sweden-9 North Korea-10 Japan-11 Spain-12 Denmark-13 Norway-14 Italy-15 South Korea-16 China-17 Switzerland-18 Iceland-19 New Zealand-20
In the past year we've played USA once 0-1 aus China 3 times 0-3 aus Brazil 3 times 0-3 aus Portugal twice 1 loss 1 draw Japan 3 times 1 draw, 1-1 aus Thailand twice 0-2 aus Vietnam once 0-1 aus South Korea 1 draw
11 wins 3 draws 2 losses
Take out a rebuilding Chinese team, an aging Brazilian team, a 30th ranked Thailand team (who took us to penaltys), a 35th ranked Vietnam team and you end up with...
2 wins (USA- rank 1, Japan- rank 11) - tournament of nations... 3 draws (Portugal- rank 36, South Korea- rank 16, Japan- rank 11) algarve and Asian cup.... 2 losses (Portugal- rank 36, Japan- rank 11) - algarve bronze medal match and Asian cup final...
We never played other top level sides like Germany, England, Canada, France, Netherlands or other nations who have rapidly improved in the last 2 years.

They did not play too badly, they just lacked some cutting edge in creating better chances.
Similar to how we played last time around, the attacking play was too predictable with alot of crossing, not much creativity.
I felt Gorry could have made a difference if she was given a licence to roam, but surprisingly did not come on.
Overall even though we made the final it was an underwhelming tournament, we could no break down South Korea, got lucky against Japan with the goal scored and had to score a 90th-minute equaliser again Thailand, they could not play there fluid best football all tournament.
It also seems like what happened last year the opposition teams have worked us out in how we play, it's now up to Staj to figure out solutions going forward to the world cup next year.
Alot of work needs to be done!

Who was it that took that penalty? Why, when the best striker in the women's game plays for Australia or even Van Egmond - hits the ball pretty hard. This playing for silverware, not some dead rubber

I'd take out... Dumont, Alleway, Cooper, Gielnik, Crummer, Heyman
Bring in... Campbell, Checker(or another new young CB), Yeoman-Dale, Harrison(injured- back October) , Foord(injured-back July), Siemsen Young Players with a bit more pace...
Keep the same starting 11 for every game. Develop chemistry... No more 'building depth' and changing the lineup every game. Also, work on creativity up front and penalties.

Very disappointing not to win it, but finishing runners-up is nothing to scoff at. Excellent effort from the Matildas. This feels like the 2015 world cup all over again (and that was also a 1-0 loss to Japan with a late goal too IIRC)....very much so. Hopefully we can avoid Japan for as long as possible at the world cup next year because they seem to have our number in knockout games.

I'd be interested to see how we'd fair against some of the top ranked European teams. I suspect, as good as the Matildas are, we'd be found wanting.

From the looks of things, they lined up as...
--------------------------Whyman(99)---------------------- ----------Crummer(96)-----------Tumeth(01)------------------- Vine(98)------------------------------------------Nevin(02) ----------------Sayer(01)---------Ray(01)------------------ Condon(98)-----------Chidiac(99)-------------Ibini(00) ---------------------------Fowler(02?)-----------------------
Cooney-Cross, phonsongkham and Hodgson as subs I think. Who was the CB next to Crummer? We don't seem to have a lot of depth in that department and Polkinghorne, Cooper and Alleway are all near 30y.o
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Tumeth was very good..
Some nice CBs coming through with her, Hunt, Hristodolou, Matic, Mcqueen etc etc.
Can't tell if it was Gordon or vine at RB... Was having trouble with the stream. Looked like red hair lol. Could have been blonde...
