VAR is in the WC, that's why

I'm well aware of that. But it's largely irrelevant to the squad selection.

I'm a little bit salty that Brillante was selected ahead of Antonis - Terry had a much better season in the last 3 months than Brillante.

good stuff Gersbach back in.
Arzani yes thankyou.
Happy with the recalls but why bother Langerak, Ryan, Vukes and Jones are enough but I guess he wants to check him out again.

From the squad, I would take...

Ryan, Jones, Vukovic
Sainsbury, Susnajr, Jurman
Karacic, Degenek
Behich, Gersbach
Jedinak, Milligan, Luongo
Irvine, Mooy
Rogic, Petratos
Leckie, Arzani, Kruse
Juric, Maclaren, Cahill

Deng over Degenek though and I'd take a healthy Williams over jurman.

I haven't  seen Brillante   play as much, but Antonis has played well in the latter half of the season.

However, Antonis was poor by his own standards in the final in front of BVM.

In general Brillante is better at breaking up attacks and is more of an asset in winning the ball.

Antonis is a more skilful player on the ball, but not as good a ball winner.

Do we need a big rejuvenation after the World Cup? Similar to what Ange did when he came through?? Can we win the Asian Cup with this current squad?

Not too many changes. Depends on where Kruse, Jedinak and Milligan stand with their international careers. It's only 6 months after the world cup.

Hopefully Petratos, Arzani and maybe even Giannou will be seen as squad regulars.

Interesting that 12 of the outfield players selected have fewer than 10 games in an Aussie shirt. Shows what a big turnover of player we've had since Ange was appointed. Guess we'll have a significant turnover of players after the WC, with 8 players 30 or over.

Excerpts of an article written by Philip Micallef. It appeared on SBS's The World Game website on 12 May, 2018.

To read the whole thing, go to the link.

Socceroos will relish underdog status in Russia

...Incoming boss Bert van Marwijk has been appointed on a short-term basis and his tenure will cease when Australia's involvement in the competition comes to an end.

The Dutchman has inherited a group of players that contains no genuine big names except for veteran striker Tim Cahill, who is hellbent on taking part in his fourth World Cup and perhaps even scoring a goal which would make him one of only a handful of men to find the net in four tournaments.

The general consensus in Australia and abroad is that the Socceroos are highly unlikely to emulate the class of 2006 and reach the last 16.

The present scenario is similar to that of 2014 when Ange Postecoglou took a set of demoralised yet determined players to Brazil to face Chile, the Netherlands and Spain.

...

On a technical and tactical front it is hard to expect a repetition of the encouraging stuff provided by Postecoglou's troops four years ago.

You see, the main reason people were opposed to a short-term coach appointment is because van Marwijk is not interested in the long-term future of the Socceroos.

Van Marwijk enjoys a reputation for getting results even though the Netherlands team he took to the World Cup final in Johannesburg will be remembered mostly as an overly physical and negative version of a once admired and loved football nation.

He will do whatever it takes to obtain results with little or no regard to the broader interests of the national team. Why would he? It's not in his 'job description' after all.

This is not having a go at van Marwijk, but questioning the rationale of those who thought that a six-month position for our national team was a bright idea and not a clear band-aid solution to the Socceroos' conundrum.

Postecoglou, in sharp contrast, saw himself as a man on a mission to change the way we played our football when he took over the job in 2013 and his bold approach was rewarded when the Socceroos snared their first major honour by winning the AFC Asian Cup seven months after the World Cup...

Hell of a lot of assumptions made in the article.

From a technical side of things, there's potential for them to be somewhat sharper than in Brazil (although purely by fluke of fitness, form and so on).

I think the only retiree after the World Cup should be Timmy, obviously at 38, probably won't find a new club afterwards and certainly no serious game time next season.

The next elder statesman is Mile, and although he'll be 34 by the Asian Cup, he'll hopefully be halfway through an EPL campaign as a key player for Aston Villa at that point and ready to go. A dichotomically different scenario to Cahill's present situation.

Aside from Milligan, Meredith and Ruka are the only other outfield players aged 30 and it's likely neither of those two will make the 23 for this World Cup as is.

Everyone else will only be six months older after the World Cup come the Asian Cup and so the squad should surely be picked on current merit based on winning the thing; regeneration can wait for the start of the next WCQ cycle in the first group stage when we play the minnows.

Then again, who knows what Arnie's philosophy will be.

jedi will probably have 1 more good season. Kruse probably will peak over the next year or 2 since he is returning from injury this season. Cahill of course will retire and milligan has probably declined a little. Jones seems to be declining as well

Apart from that there is little need for rejuvination. A lot of players are heading into their prime and some of them will go to another level.

It will be like the roos of old where you have to beat the door down to get a spot

i could see cahill playing a couple years in the MLS.

i suspecct he will retire from the NT after the WC.  it's a fitting end for the best player to slip on an australian NT jersey.  lets just see if he even gets a run at the WC. hopefully he bags another goal for us.

So just received my Rogic away kit from Ali express for $20US. All is have to say is it's. Fucking beautiful. The numbers are as good as they get without being the official ones. They might come off easy in the wash but most numbers do.

The emblem is stichted on as good as any other official one plus there's a Nike tick and even dry fit printing etc. Over the moon. Only took 12 days despite their saying 20-40 days and that to Germany.

The package tracking was odd in that it said it was in China still with dispatch ready to Frankfurt last night. Came in the mail at 11am today.

Weirdly the shops who sell disappear and it's hard to find them then they come back online.

The kit against CR seemed bright yellow, not gold at all. Not sure why, but it appeared to be a different colour to what the girls wore in the Asian Cup.

I’ve been against the all gold kit, but for some reason this one looks okay. Better than the last one anyway.
Maybe it’s because of the change in shade of yellow as you mention.
Still, I’d prefer we bring back the green shorts next time.

i look at our squad now and i think if you dropped that NT into the premier league they would not be relegated.

this is even less contentious if you considered putting them into bundesliga, serie a, la liga, or ligue 1.

so why aren't all our squad playing at that level?
