SFC approve Macarthur, but not the Expansion process https://www.fourfourtwo.com.au/news/sydney-fc-throw-support-behind-macarthur-a-league-bid-its-an-exciting-proposition-493015/page0“The Macarthur region is the future of Sydney. It’s the city’s fastest growing region and will have one million people living there in the coming years.
It is an area with a very high proportion of young families - perfect for an A-League club.
This is where a big successful club can be based, in the heart of a growing community and with a fanbase that has a real sense of ownership in the club. Campbelltown Stadium is the ideal home, they have the full support of the Campbelltown Mayor and they now have the support of one of Australia’s leading businessmen, Lang Walker AO.
What a coup it would be to have someone of Lang’s stature involved in the A-League

Bitch Fight ! In complete contrast to the Macarthur proposal, I am strongly opposed to a team based in south Sydney. The southern regions of Sydney including St George and Sutherland are vital parts of Sydney FC’s heartland. 30% of our members come from the south, in fact more than from the east of Sydney. And over the next three seasons we will be playing close to half our home games at Kogarah.“A new team based in the south would be very damaging to our club and would result in huge cannibalisation of our fanbase. Put simply it would cut our club off at the knees. “The Southern Expansion bid is a deeply flawed proposal. It is an attempt to pull together three completely unrelated regions of NSW. The people of Wollongong do not associate themselves with Cronulla or Kogarah and vice versa. You cannot build a passionate, parochial, rusted-on fan base from three unrelated areas. The fact that they propose to play their home games out of three different stadiums highlights just how inherently flawed the proposal is. The last thing we need in the A-League is a nomadic club and I, along with many others in the game, believe it would be destined to fail. “I am also concerned about the major conflict of interest their CEO, Chris Gardiner, has. It is highly inappropriate for Chris to be both the CEO of Southern Expansion and at the same time on the Board of Football NSW. Chris needs to decide quickly which of these two roles are more important to him because holding both positions is simply untenable.

+xI'll see your stadium and raise you another stadium ..................... If they truly have the money (and approval) to build this, then FFA would be stupid not to choose them. And even more stupid not to expand with 4 clubs. TBH I would be happy if they announce 4 teams, 2 will start in 19/20 and the other 2 will start 20/21

A thread to follow this fascinating elimination contestThe Fights, the Bitching, Outlandish Promises, Conspiracies and Mind Games Gardiner didn't hold back, saying the Macarthur option was up to a decade away from being successful and would be a “drag on the A-League”.He added: “The challenge for the A-League is whether they want an immediately successful team – Southern – which boosts TV audiences and match-day attendances with a little short-term discomfort for Sydney FC, or go with a club and region – Macarthur – that is 5-10 years away from being successful and will be a drag on the A-League. “I know that the other A-League teams know which one is best for the competition, even if Sydney FC’s fear is clouding their judgment. “Mr Barlow comes from a great Australian tradition of protectionism and monopoly. Clearly he is panicking about the prospect of a strong A-League competitor based in the Southern region.

Joe Lynch on FNR The Journos is speculating Belgravia will join up with either Team 11 or West Melbourne. Interesting talking point but to be taken with a grain of salt.

West Melbourne + South Melbourne + Dandenong + Wollongong + South Sydney + Macarthur/Campbelltown/Liverpool + Brisbane City + Canberra = 18 farken teams, in an ideal world . . . . .
He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

It makes sense, Geoff Lord is one of the founders of Melbourne Victory, but is no longer associated with the club. His experience and funding for either of the Melbourne bids would be massive.

Robbie Slater: Southern Expansion would harm Sydney FC, and their bid should be ruled outROBBIE Slater has delivered a scathing rebuke of an A-League expansion hopeful, outlining the ‘pure facts’ that mean their bid must be destined to fail.
“There’s no miss with this, we have to make sure the new franchises are given the best chance of succeeding and not harming existing clubs.
And that franchise clearly does, it’s clear it’s not even a discussion.”

Poor Southern, going to have to getting bigger brown paper bags at this rate.
The chances of Sydney's Southern Expansion's A-League bid winning a race for entrance into the competition next year were dealt a blow after he confirmed their threat to Sydney FC's membership base had been acknowledged by FFA. After a public slanging match last week between the Sky Blues and the bidding team, Gallop says Sydney FC's complaints about a new team in the city's south will not be ignored. Sydney FC released a strong statement labelling Southern Expansion - led by Craig Foster and former NSW Premier Morris Iemma - as a "flawed" bid that directly targets the Sky Blues' largest region for registered members, prompting a loaded response from the bid team. Gallop says the potential of Southern Expansion to eat away at Sydney FC's supporter base is a concern and the FFA will take into account the potential threat any new team will have on the market of existing clubs as part of the expansion process. "We’ve always said that we have to be really careful to consider the impact on the existing clubs," he said. "There is probably aspects of that [exchange between the two parties] that were less than ideal but I don’t think it was any secret that Sydney FC have strong views about the south-east region and of course that will be taken into account ... that’s always been the case."

If Southern Expansion is being rejected ted by many became ir will eat into another clubs supporte base, then like it or not SMFC is a non-starter.
With no geographical differentiation (based in the inner city with 2 existing clubs), theres next to no way they can prove that this will not adversely affect the existing clubs in order to grow.
At least Team 11 and Western Melbourne are looking further afield to tap into significant growth areas.

Supporter base erosion is the dumbest reason to reject.
If an existing club had that many disinterested fans to join the new/prospective clubs, then they weren't fans to begin with.

Either way, Robbie is right this bid is horrific. The idea of a bid from the southern suburbs of Sydney is fine. Sydney FC were given 5 years without opposition in the Sydney market in the initial set up of the A-League now the market is fair game. If Sydney FC weren't so intent on being a club for all of Sydney and concentrated on the growing population and football player base on its doorstep they would be doing better than now and would have no concerns for the future. There are plenty of cities around the world with multiple clubs and Sydney can accommodate that too.
