I think judging u18 players out of 10 is fucking sad tbh
To give someone / anyone 3/10 is not on imo and is the reason keyboard warriors do so much damage to young people both in sport and in life , too much judgement from the hidden people , put your name up then critique but don’t hide .

No - Roberts pieras najjarine italiano ackbari najjar etc etc all fuelled with multiple media stories on this web site alone as some of the best youth talent in Oz. all either having played ALeague or will play this season. None of these players showed any remote glimpse to justify the hype.

To anyone judging the player quality based on one game where they hardly played together is looking at it with short sighted and naiveness in the game of international football especially when it comes to youth.

I wished the FFA treated its youth teams seriously and invest in getting them playing 10-15 international games per year like how they do in Japan, South Korea and all various Asian countries who have done better than us rather than piss farting with these training camps which do very little development for these teams chances of doing well...

I can't see the problem of ranking an individuals performance. and then justifying why. Everyone knows what these guys are capable of. Individually I have followed the progress of these guys specifically for two and a half years now seeing where they're at. Maybe I'm expecting too much from them, but your reaction implies I simply gave everyone a 3/10 and left it at that.

I can see where you're coming from but then I'd argue that maybe youth are too protected and don't know how to take the next step because they aren't being critiqued hard enough. You could argue the opposite and we'd end up at a crossroads again.

sorry If I've offended anyone in the process of my post-game report.

At the end of the day I'm heavily invested in the progression of our footballers.

Maybe there is a reason why Arnie took over the Olyroos gif as he probably realised how little these guys train, prepare and rarely play matches together.

The young Socceroos which is this u18 group haven’t played a competitive game since last October and the Joeys haven’t play a game since last September, scary of the lack of preparation.

Biggest problem with our nt youth squads. Tough game again tonight and 5 of the boys out sick there will have to be a shuffle with the squad.

No , Arnie is looking after the U23s , ante Milicic is in charge of the U 20s
This tournament in Japan is sort of thrown together at last moment , with no camps or get together before rocking up to play against a Japanese team that have played and trained together for at least 4/5 years in some form or another ,
The difference between Aus and the Japs is that they treat their youth development with respect and invest their coaching accordingly

From what I’ve seen it will take a miracle to qualify for the World Cup if they played today, they look very disorganised especially with the ball.

The youth teams have been nothing short of a disaster largely thanks to the FFA treatment of them.

Keep in mind that the wc qualifiers will have 99 born players. All these boys are 2000 or younger. I would expect the team to be very different.

On the back of my comments last night and the ratings I gave the players, that seemed to force a negative reaction on here. I just wanted to clear something up. Obviously yes, this team is up against it, preparation, familiarity, different conditions. Yes, that all matters.

However, unless I just seem to be completely ignorant of our U18 squad, and yes I'm aware of the fact that this isn't the squad that will bore the brunt of WCQ, but Individual flair/quality/ability just isn't there for us, regardless of being a team and doing well, to me, maybe one or two guys showed just the slightest glimpse of what they're about.

All these excuses we're making up about ages, foreign countries, coaching, curriculums etc could be argued to be true. But at the end of the day you either have natural footballing ability or you don't and unfortunately we don't have a lot that can adapt to doing it at youth international level.

For instance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QskHgqUFbrw&list=PLxa2AB3-xOrtsoXx2G5tR7gLMAR1fZDJo&index=5

Go to 1:38  Samuel Silvera did that. Some of the best dribbling I've seen.

That is the kind of thing when it comes to Youth internationals, for some reason our players don't play with their soul.

My ratings and reaction were due to the fact that I know that they're capable of doing those things, but they just can't or won't do it at International level which baffles me.

Yes coaching, game tactics and other things come into it, but geeze can we please encourage our players to express themselves. The Japanese last night were continually doing little chops and flicks, and I think it was Italiano who did a neat little backheel drag sort of thing to release the ball from a tight contest, which led to an attack.  Left the Japanese a bit shocked for the first time all night.

Tbh I agree with most of what your say (except the player ratings, lol)
The problem with this team and many others that have come and gone before is that they are coached to be robots in both defence and attack , the Dutch 433 system that is programmed into the state bodies and the FFA will not allow for a player of skill to flourish as it doesn’t fit into this mantra.
Arzani, Italiano, Mcgree , Roberts And Kuzmonozki are a few that have the X factor but the likes of Tony Vidmar,Paul Okon and Ufuk Talay will try to coach it out of them instead of encouraging the unexpected .
Most South American or Asian teams do not have this problem , they treasure the entertainers .

Not a criticism I’ve heard of the Dutch system before.

The South Americans are so skilful because they grow up playing street football from as soon as they can walk. Those are the critical years where you develop your motor/technical skills.

Also, they play less players per side in smaller spaces, meaning more touches in tight space which forces them to learn better ball control.
This is definitely something we could use more of by promoting more indoor from early ages (Rogic and Arzani are products of indoor).

Also, which system is dominating world football lately? It’s those based on the Dutch system (Germany, Spain, France etc).

Also you’ve got a case of rose tinted glasses for the old guys here. They weren’t that good. Some of the young Dutch system guys you mentioned there will be better.

This post is just totally wrong about coaching robots.

Coaching defence as a team in BPO requires a lot of discipline, but in Ball Possession there is room for plenty of creativity within the current system.

I'm sorry, Jonsnow, but with due respect what evidence do you have for your view?

To me, I'm sorry but that doesn't cut it. 'Being coached to be Robots,' Thats not good enough.

Players in general know what can be the most effective way of playing a game of Football and flair is a big part of it. Coaches aren't (well I hope not) stupid enough to tell a bloke like say Grozos, Silvera, Ianucci, Kirdar, Adam, or any other youngster coming through that "hey that little thing you did that led to a goal (or shot on goal), don't do that again, because the FFA will think we aren't doing our jobs."

Ultimately it comes down to a players confidence in himself with the backing of his coach and teammates to say, "that's the way I'm going to go about my Football." Arzani probab ly doesn't know it but, he's slightly arrogant, but confident in his abilities to take on players. Warren Joyce who also helped mould Jesse Lingard who looked hopeless until he hit 22yo, also  helped mould Arzani, a bloke with a temperament who looks as though he'd smash the bastard if he was playing against him. :)

But he saw the positives and effectiveness of what they were producing and just alternated and brought back any immaturity that would leave them exposed.

I'm assuming that 100% of the squad will be 1999 born or younger due to 2020 Olympics eligibility.

Any guesses on fresh faces we might not have seen before?

The 2020 Olympic is 1997 or younger, not 99.

So it’ll be the top picks from this thread:
