The one reason I’m actually liking Arnold as the NT coach now is because he’s taking charge of the Olyroos for the Olympics.

We actually have a good U23 squad for once. Plus it’ll be easier to qualify this time because Japan are automatically qualified as hosts.
So there’s 4 spots in Asia not including Japan. And with Arnold leading the team, it should be easy.

My bad, it is 1997.

Another positive of Arnie leading the team is that overseas-based players will want to commit to traveling to Asia to play for the Olyroos for a change, knowing that they’ll be in full view of the national team manager.

Who is our best young goalkeeper? Maynard-Brewer needs game time and is reserve at Charlton. How's Jordan Holmes?

I suspect the lack of creativity supposed not used or seen with the youth teams is probably a result of,

a) lack of time these teams can work together and most of the time is used is for implementing the playing style and the stucture around wth both sides of the ball which means the players are either not inclined or told to focus on the basis a bit more I.e less showboating and more to the team structure principles given how little they have worked together

And b) it’s also a confidence thing as well, Arzani is seen as a cocky kid who isn’t fazed by anyone whilst maybe more shyer kids may not be the same even though they might have similar abilities like Arzani

So there are factors regarding this but I think it’s largely to do with preparation and how much more the coach wants to focus more on the structures, you think Latino coaches are more happy to allow the players to express themselves but they are hard disciplinarians like anyone else but the difference is Latino players and the people within are free spirited and the coaches come from that culture and so they understand it and don’t take it away from them unlike Europe or Australia where structure is seen as more important than flair.

Maybe Johnny Warren was right on how we need more South American coaches coaching the next gen of players.

More 2 cents on this.

Driscoll is the most highly rated young keeper overseas.
Also have glover, Maynard brewer, holmes, schwarzer etc

Here at home you've got several keepers born 97-00 in a league clubs.
Margush, Howard-Belle, Pearce, Mawith, Delianov, Richards, Suman, Gauci, Sutton, James etc

Anyone know when Olympic qualification actually starts?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_AFC_U-23_Championship

Tournament 8–26 January 2020, qualifiers 18–26 March 2019.

Thanks to our poor 2018 AFC U-23 Championship results we're seeded in Pot 2 for qualifiers and could get Japan, South Korea or our youth level nemesis Vietnam in our qualifying group, and only the best half of the second place getters make it.

Great point. Hopefully that means we’re more likely to see players like Arzani, Gersbach, O’Neil and Piscopo.

Now that Arnie is taking over, I’m not worried.
It’s rare that we actually have a competent results driven coach at youth level.

All we have to do is be in the top 60% of second placed teams (or top 16 Asian teams). There’s only 20% chance of Japan or Korea in our group. And 0% chance of Saudi or Iran.

The real challenge will be the U23 Asian cup. An unlucky draw there could mean we’re out of the Olympics.

Apparently Arnie will be hosting an introductory Olyroos training camp next week. Will be interesting to see who he calls up.

Next week as in before the FIFA international window break in early September?

I agree it will be good that Arnie is taking charge of both teams.

He is now a very experienced coach too. In  the past concerns have been expressed by experienced coaches, that Australia's national underage teams have often been assigned to coaches learning their trade. The onus has been on developing those inexperienced  coaches - more than the players.

Arnold has coached for many years at HAL and ACL level.

Decent first half, seem to be getting more opportunities compared to the last two games. Our best chances have come from counter-attack/breaks. our speed up front with Adam, Roberts and Najjar is pretty cool. just the end product not brilliant. Their keeper hasn't had to do much whatsoever, even in general play. Suman on the other hand has had his hands full.
Italiano is playing RB in the absence of Pierias

Some of these Japanese Shizuoka lads are insanely talented.

Group stage finished in the Asian Games for U23 teams that we'll be up against next year for Olympics qualifiers. A fair few surprises, all pleasant from my point of view.

I made a post in the Asian Football subforum that no one reads with more discussion of the results:

They just not carving up in youth ranks they also giving some of these teams are touch up in the u20 women’s World Cup also, the are on the verge of making the final.

Clearly Japanese are very strong technically, probably close to the best in the world or in the top 10 in terms of technique so there is no shame in what they have been doing in there youth development.

We just need to go on our own path and from what I’ve seen I don’t think we ever can go to Japan’s technical level but we have improved technically in the last few years and that’s important in our development.

You lied to me Bowden 😀
I think it will be hard to have a Olyroos camp in the September FIFA window because Arnie said yesterday he will be having a Socceroos training camp in Turkey in the same FIFA date. This is one of the reasons I don't think Arnie juggling the two jobs is a great idea. Unless he has a Australian only based camp at home not including euro players and worrying about players being released .

Seems I wasn’t lying after all - FFA just don’t announce shit!

According to Twitter, Arnie is running an Olyroos camp in Canberra right now, there’s just no press coverage at all on the squad!

It was a three day camp from the interview I heard on radio. He took it with the Rene Mualsteen. Obviously it would of been just local players.

The AFC U-19 Championship (which is the U-20 World Cup qualifier) kicks off in six weeks. Arzani, Pasquali, Theoharus and Genreau all eligible.

AFC U-19 Women's Championship qualification starts in three weeks, and I don't see a host for our group yet on wiki, hope they get around to organising that!
