The left has completely lost the plot re Kavanaugh in the US. I knew they were already demented but this latest round of shenanigans proves they have completely broken with reality and forsaken any kind of moral fortitude. Can you imagine if the Right in Australia acted like such imbeciles? There would be riots on every street corner, mass demonstrations, hunger strikes, it would be total chaos and anarchy.

I'd say part of the problem is that American's tend to put people in power based on their political beliefs (alliances) and support, more so than their experience / resume. The whole system seems a lot more politicised in America than Australia. Could be that our Justices are appointed by the GG (a politically neutral party) compared to the US who are appointed by the President (and generally who align with their political views).

The whole system in America seems more aligned with ensuring the President is surrounded by "yes" men/women than actually good governance.

You're right Sokorkny.  Presidents choose their candidates primarily on ideology.  The left have no problem elevating their hacks to the highest court in the land, they are just upset that the latest round of appointees have been chosen by republicans, therefore acquiescing control of the supreme court to conservatives.  It's a complete double standard btw, they may not like the appointees and the decisions, however that is the consequence of living in a free, democratic society.  Not everything goes your way all the time, but these latest hijinks prove how ruthless and desperate the left are to hang onto power , even if it means debasing themselves morally.  No one can honestly defend what they have done to Kavanaugh, it welll and truly ventured outside of standard fare political merrymaking and into the sphere of evil.   No doubt some of these democrats who swan around posturing for their various moral causes, given them a gun and immunity, would not hesitate to a put a slug into the judges the head.

That's not as bad as supporting false allegations and trying to destroy somebody because they have the "wrong" politics.  Kavanaugh should launch defamation proceedings against CNN, MSNBC, ACLU, the Democratic party and every other radical left wing body that defamed him.

bThat's not as bad as supporting false allegations and trying to destroy somebody because they have the "wrong" politics.  Kavanaugh should launch defamation proceedings against CNN, MSNBC, ACLU, the Democratic party and every other radical left wing body that defamed him.

It seems to be the whole American system though ... it is all about character assassination rather than who they are now. The whole Presidency is about the character rather than their policy / actions .... Trump doesn't even stand for half of what the Republican party does yet he sits in the White House as their rep. They are not truly representatives of their party, ut an individual (it is more a dictatorship with some checks and balances more so than a democracy).

Although it will be interesting to see if any charges are pushed regarding the accusations made against Kavanaugh, as they are very serious allegations and you want imagine that now they'd have to proceed with legal charges if there is truth to them.

Perhaps the problem is again how these appointments are made. I do not believe that High Court appointments in Australia go through such a public ordeal or require a public hearing of their confirmation .... again is this a problem with the process in America??

Alan Jones is a human pustule.

It is unfortunate that the NSW Premier did not stand up for the principles of the Opera House's status as a landmark, not a billboard. Also she should have called a spade a spade when dealing with Alan ... of course he was only ever making the statement because of a personal interest (wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last). She should have called him out on that and let the original decision stand.

Consider that Andrew Bolt has even come out in condemnation of the decision (he tactfully made his target the NSW Premier instead of Jones though).

No one busted a nut when they put the rainbow colours over the opera house in support of gay marriage.  You just cant pick and choose when its a billboard and when its a landmark.

Can you imagine if Catholic Church plastered their imagery all over the Opera House, in the name of religious freedom?   No doubt the left would bust both nuts over that, but when its one of their trendy, fashionable causes they are all in favour of it.

Well if they were promoting religious freedom then they wouldn't have any of their imagery on the Opera House, as that would only promote their religion not a cause.

Not to mention they already have a "blank slate" they can freely promote religious freedom on ... not sure they have yet (I wonder why??)

They had the colours of the LGBT community after a nation wide plebiscite passed same sex marriage ... If the Catholic Church wanted to put up something that symbolised the secular nature of Australia and the freedom of any or no religious beliefs, I am sure no one would have an objection as those values reflect those of society and our constitution.

Would you be OK with the a depiction of the nativity of Jesus being flashed across the opera house on Christmas Day?  After all more Australians identify as Christian than support gay marriage.

Horseshit mate. How is this either? People are pissed off because it represents another example of the NSW gov destroying the culture of our city and anything organic whilst selling it to the highest bidder. It also pisses people off when a government that has been morally posturing overpolicing and lecturing in relation to drug use and alcohol consumption so freely allows promotion of gambling at every turn.

This projection epitomises everything infuriating about the current government and that's why it has blown up. Overturning the opera house decision is yet another "we know what's best for you" middle finger to the residents of this city.

I agree, but as great Australian once said, the standard you walk past is the standard you accept.  The opera house and all cultural icons should be free of commercial, religious and political messaging, including all the trendy fashionable fashionable causes such as gay activism.  If you allow some of these things then you open it up to all kinds of exploitation.  The only things, if anything, that should be broadcast on the opera house are things which are non politically, cultural and socially neutral, such as the Australian flag, sporting events, teams etc.   A major horse racing carnival could reasonably constitute a sporting event, but I would not support the marketing of odds.

I say we project advertising on both Parliament houses, fly MacDonalds flags next to Australian and Aboriginal flags, recite KFC advertising at sporting events before we sing the anthem, make our politicians wear the same sponsor-laden outfits as racing car drivers and project ads for 'Love Island' directly on the tombstones of fallen Anzacs.

While we're at it let's change Sydney's name to 'Sydney, brought to you by Westfield and NewsCorp'

I wouldn't care, although I prefer simply colours on the sails than images ... I think that colours area a nice simple gesture that can add to the buildings appearance at night time, whereas images tend to come across as a bit tacky.

FYI - Based on percentages more Australians/New South Welshmen support same sex marriage than identify as Christians (61.6% 'Yes', NSW was 57.8% compared to 52.2%, NSW was 55.2% Christians)

I'm pretty sure religious schools can already fire someone (or not hire them) that doesn't align with their religious beliefs (which would include homosexuality for most religions)

How brave of them. I like how God is apparently against educating gay kids or hiring gay teachers yet seems to be fine with priests raping children. It's almost like they're discriminating but cloaking it under religious freedom and the authority of a deity who never seems to speak up publicly.
