“Australia's first day of Test cricket on the new broadcasters, Seven and Fox Sports, was unable to break a wider trend of falling television audience numbers, recording a combined average of fewer than 1 million viewers nationally at peak time in the final session” http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/25474637/new-television-era-australia-fails-crack-1-million-markTV execs clearly confused: if they’re not watching tv, what the ***** are they doing?

That explains why we are being out rated by the WBBL now We have gone from being "Its football but not as you know it" to "We are just another 'me too' sport in an over flooded Australian sports market" There is nothing fresh about the A League. Its the same stale shit of 'insert franchise name here' playing 'insert franchise name here' in a balanced competition. There is a reason why the FFA were exploring BBL crowd pleasing tactics in the preseason If we had a competitive league with big name teams (the biggest in this country) that dominate not just the A League but also Asia, complimented by a second tier it may just be different enough to turn things around

Of course we’re going to get outraged by WBBL ... unless you want to make a case like “but it’s only women”?
WBBL will attract people who like watching cricket, samewith AFLW. It’s not like a cricket tragic is going to watch the sok-ha instead of the cricket right.
AFL, NRL and Cricket are the three big drawing tv sports and their women’s game will pick up a ready made audience that likes their sport.
I don’t know if anyone’s got the ratios but it looks like about a quarter of the men’s comp tune in for the women’s equivent - the HAL gets 50-60k on average and W League 12-15k ... I’d assume something similar translates in other sports?
And when you do the math, Football is getting paid about right for it’s viewershio, arguably it’s better value if the costs associated with AFL/NRL are sending Fox broke??

It's called the internet. In the football world people need to accept An League is not anywhere near primary content.

The real issues is not how other sports are rating. But how we are rating. Our ratings have dropped around 40%. That has nothing to do with other sports. It's the result of where FFA have brought us. Once we had a vibrant growing sport, that seemed to be going places. In the stands and on TV the fans were as much of a spectacle as the players. Fast forward to now and nobody in the media talks about fans anymore or watches fans marching to the stadium or chanting in the stands. The game has stagnated for years and fans have got bored and left. Once I used to be a member and have non football friends who were members .Now none of us are members and none of those friends even follow the football anymore. It's kind of sad.But shows what metrics can do. A strerilised closed competition may look good on paper. But who wants to watch it ear after year? There is a reason why some of the best TV series end up getting cancelled.People get bored!

Isn’t the general trend that all viewing is dropping significantly?
Regardless, it’s a reality that people need to accept and also focus on the strengths of the game instead of trying to imitate others...

Problem is as my father said Aussies hate the English we apparently are viewed by Aussies as English and our game is also viewed as English so there are other problems aswell but because those dumb English colonists that came here 300 years ago brought cricket with them which translated into the afl being made if they didn't bring cricket over then football ( soccer to Aussies) would be the afl of Australia the dominant sport like the rest of the world. I wish Australia was colonised by the Dutch or Portuguese then afl wouldn't be a problem nor would thugby league. Next 10 years afl will go into misery when they have no grassroots football will be number 1. Fear of the round ball continues.

Adelaide vs victory was a really good game so the quality of the game isn’t an excuse I guess it’s more how people see the a league definitely need to change the reputation of the league

Any clued in fan knew adelaide and melb city were never going to score last night.

All sports may have had a dip, but no other sport has dropped 40% in one year like we have.
Average crowds have fallen for 5 consecutive seasons too.
Anyone who thinks our skinny ratings are due to online digital factors are fukn kidding themselves. Fact is there are way less people watching the HAL than there was 5 years ago.
That’s disastrous. People are switching off and walking away. I’m not convinced that can be stopped.

No.
But I’m suggesting we face reality rather than looking for excuses like “oh but all sports have had a ratings drop”.
Until we get a genuine open comp, not this constricted franchise Mickey Mouse experiment, we cant expect things to change for the long term.

But it’s always been a closed Mickey Mouse competition so why was it popular four years ago? I say active support is needed we need all the teams to have a hot active area especially the rbb

Sometimes a competition just reaches a point where everyone gets over it. It might take 5-10 years or in this case 15,
The NSL was put out of its misery pretty much exactly a decade after promotion/relegation ceased.
The perception of the A league now is that it’s simply never gonna grow, a few new franchises will come in and have a bit of hype but once the novelty wears off it’s back to where we are now or even worse.
The level of support the game has really hasn’t changed, in the nsl days less people watched top flight but the lower leagues were more popular, a lot more popular, now more watch top flight but for support outside it is dead.
Simply no appetite to unlock the games full potential.

Exactly.
You can run a closed Mickey Mouse comp for a few years, have a bit of interest, but it doesn’t unlock the potential of the game, people get bored, and it stagnates. That’s where we are now.

I say active support is needed we need all the teams to have a hot active area especially the rbb When the league started Yorke and Muscat were revolutionary, then Aloisi, then Culina, The Kewell / Emerton, and suddenly Del Piero / Heskey / Ono The more the league has progressed the more fans demand. A single marquee player isnt going to get people through the gates The salary cap served its purpose. So did one Melbourne and Sydney team. Thats why the league was once popular but isnt anymore The next evolution of our game is big clubs. Nobody likes seeing teams like Brisbane and WSW at the foot of the table. Rival fans might get a laugh, but equally they arent turning up in great numbers either

There are many reasons for the fall off in interest and they all contribute to a negative perception. When WSW came in.That year the vibe around the game was greatest. But Gallop and S.Lowy went on a crusade to sterilise the game and pander to the anti football media. Who can forget the year when Gallop was fighting everyone in the game.....Fans,professional and amatuer players, clubs, media,tv stations youth,expansion,p/r,Futsul.....literally everyone and everything. Then they relaxed the salary cap to support the big city clubs and force regional clubs to struggle. FFA actually thought everything could be rationalised to a spread sheet and the number of people in big cities.Fish where the fish are. They have abandoned grass roots and regional Australia. Fans started leaving and the momentum has continued. Most people dont want to watch big city teams win year after year and the same teams at the bottom playing for nothing!
Somewhere down the track we are heading for another reboot. Maybe an independent League will help. But we seriously need a football pyramid .
Next time maybe we will, get two teams per city and more regional teams ,as well as A 2nd division with p/r. Until all of football is engaged we ain't going anywhere.
