Extremely overrated player...the five minutes he played in a game were often exaggerated to make him appear a superstar.T Rex was almost a busy player by comparison. No...under any circumstances

On that list, Willie Mason was one of my fav players, so it's frustrating when guys get to their mid 30's & can't make the impact they used to.
Great to see him having some fun last year in the charity match with Sherwin, O'Meley etc.
Frank was another one not making much impact for long towards the end of his football days, but sure made his presence felt to a lot of opposition players over his career though.
The rest on that list, I'm not surprised at least 2 of them were on it, sign them up...

It is hard to judge when an older player has reached their use by date.

Mostly I favour letting guys go a season too early rather than a season too late.
It all depends on whether the player and their manager have realistic salary expectations and are prepared to play reserve grade if that is the best fit.

In reality the NRL salary cap does not reward loyalty, particularly long term player loyalty.

No matter how great a player is, everyone has a use by date.

Indeed. The salary cap destroys any sense of loyalty a club may have to a player.
These days, there is no loyalty in the game at all - proven by the merry-go-round from players to coaches to administrators to refs.
The game has lost that part of its tribal feel. You can no longer support a player these days as they wear different colour jersey every season.

Its the reason I don't get attached to them. I find them disposable heroes (throwback to a metallica song)

That's all true.
With Mason in particular, I doubt Canterbury would have a trophy this side of the turn of the century without his efforts. He really did well during his time at the club. Some fan stories were over the top, naming a kid after him, tattoo of him & whatever else. At the time, the last thing anyone expected or wanted was to see him run out for the roosters or end up on a list like that one above.

Problems with lists like that above are that they are based on performance benchmarks players achieved at their peak.

Mason and Pritchard were at the end of their careers. Carney did well enough but just didnt have the drive. T Roberts and K Locke probably homesick and couldnt be bothered applying themselves either.

It's not like these guys go there to make a fist of it. Most are there either because of NRL deregistration or playing out their careers.

I like this idea....
If the person responsible doesn't come forward or isn't dobbed in by a certain deadline, they should all be charged for it!

It can be like the Sharks doping from a few years ago....

Just on the tennis.....
What does it mean after a player wins a match and as they walk to the net to shake hands with the loser, they smack the top of the net cord with their racket?

Is it a subtle sign of "I just squatted you" to the opposite player or is it a sneaky "damn you net cord for catching my forehand winner a set ago"?

I see there is talk of use-by-dates and releasing of players a season too late and I have to totally agree on everything that is said. Take teams like Melbourne for instance, with the "big three" dispersed the storm have relinquished their stranglehold on the competition, and I'm not saying they wont still be a strong club, just that their basking in the limelight will somewhat diminish. Over the next few seasons many of the players we now perceive as elite, will reach their use-by-dates, and a new set of powerhouse teams will emerge and make their mark and that is because they are bringing young fresh and talented juniors up through the ranks. I can see the Bulldogs being one of these teams, as I also see teams like Penrith and Brisbane being up there also.

You still need a few hard heads and experienced players in your squad to win a comp... I think teams like sharks, cows, storm, and rorters have shown that in the last few GFs...
Meanwhile the highly rated young Penrith squads for how long now have shown they can't put it all together come the big end of season games... The reason they chased BBQ so hard...
If the player is still at the top if their game age us irrelevant, but some clubs do fall into the trap of their decisions being guided by sentimentality...
Wonder what the average age of premiership teams has been for the last decade???...
I'd reckon that halfway mark of about 27/28

The same balance of age you talk about is the same balance of talent you need across the park.
The Storm bucked that trend and proved time and time again over the last 12 years that you can still be a contender (or premier) if you put all your money in the spine.

We have probably been the polar opposite of the Storm since 2010 and it shows.

Time to change things around. I'm hoping Dean Pay has a new direction to take the club towards. Although it has been part-forced he has already made much needed changes. Now it's time to see if they play out....
