I'm not too concerned about the other sports codes, they are irrelevant.

How did we do against Peppa Pig?

Looking at how good the waratahs ratings were, over 100k, for a sport that's meant to be on its death bed, you'd have to conclude that streaming is not affecting the super rugby  ratings

it is R1 though. there is always a spike. what figures was the HAL getting in R1? I'm sure the Melbourne derby got 100k.

edit: Melborne derby R1 got 69k on foxtel.

I think we have to accept that ratings will stay pretty low in the absence of any saturation marketing and/or quick fix hit of ‘marquee’ players.
We will also have to brace for much lower ratings again once the league opens up to pro/rel to allow clubs with smaller fan bases coming in.

Haven't you heard? NPL clubs are the axis of evil and P/R (Which would provide more games of importance) would result in lower ratings !!

I would love to know the average tv audiences pre Var and after Var, because I'm of the belief that football fans turned off in droves last season and this season the trend continued.
I say this because for the previous years prior to Var, we had the same 10 teams and the ratings were holding steady.
I could be totally wrong,  but I would like to see those numbers.

Logic and evidence point to smaller ratings when pro/rel and smaller clubs are introduced to the top tier.
We are not unique in this regard.

I think you are onto something. Not saying it's the only factor for declining tv ratings, we know there a lot of issues with the game. I think VAR was introduced in the last round of season 2016-17 season. 2016-2017 average ratings were 63,422 per game, 2017-18 51,169 and this season has record low TV ratings (most likely).

Look at any ratings around the world.
Bournemouth vs Fulham does not get the same ratings as Manchester City vs Liverpool.
If you think the A League introducing promotion and relegation will deliver an increase in ratings you’re dreaming.
Manly United vs Adelaide City or similar will lead to a decrease in viewership just like in the rest of the world.

The intention of pro/rel is not to get the same ratings as your elite teams (although a particular interesting relegation battle could do so) but rather to provide a pathway for ambitious clubs to reach the top. It allows clubs to be formed or bought in the lower divisions and, through their investment and competitive vigour, work their way to the top of the pile if they so choose. At the moment, clubs like the Mariners are allowed to squat on a licence because they're 'part of the club', rather than through their on-field performances. Pro/rel is designed to make competitive results the number 1 factor in determining the make up of the top division.

Nobody is expecting Manly United v Adelaide City to pay the bills (although in a open system, their levels of investment might lead to a different outcome) - the top 10% of the competition will provide 90% of the value in the league.

Fairly certain I'd be watching Manly vs Adelaide City in a second division over the Mariners and Brisbane if they were on at the same time

Azza, you would be in the minority.
As the evidence from around the world shows, promotion and relegation and the introduction of smaller teams leads to lower ratings and lower ground attendances.
We can expect that to happen here if we ‘open the pyramid’.

Evidence also shows these teams play closer to stadium capacity, better atmosphere and tv product. The A leagues empty seats brigade is a huge turn off.

Does the Premier League get £4 billion in TV money because Sky/BT Sports desperately wanna show Bournemouth vs Fulham or Man City vs Liverpool?

The benefit of Promotion and relegation is the interest it creates at the bottom of the ladder in Div1 and top of the ladder in Div2.
It's not rocket science.
Big team or small team ,people love the theater and the battlers.
Why else do people watch the FFA Cup?

I was watching the Roar vs Sydney game last week, and I wondered how much more special that win would have been for Brisbane had they been in a relegation dogfight. Imagine the story: a young player from the NPL comes in with a wonder-goal to potentially save Brisbane's spot in the A-league. Instead it's a win that ultimately counts for nothing.

Not to mention it's an instant media story - the media loves stories of 'the Aussie battler'. Again, we complain about lack of media coverage when we neuter ourselves from the natural headline moments football creates naturally (pro/rel, transfers etc).

Absolutely. It would also help with stadia upgrades.

The minimum requirement to the HAL is x, y and z. Lobby your council if you want the biggest and best to come.

Can you explain why the 20 members of the Premier League have voted to retain promotion/relegation rather than operate as a closed-shop?

Not sure where to stick this, but T20 is already being replaced in England and maybe the Big Bash will lbecome a new format called “The Hundred” in crickets never ending search for viewers:

I think that would happen, but equally, we shouldn't be afraid of that (see South Melb's response above) - 7k in a 10k stadium is heaps better than 9k in a 40k to 50k stadium

Everything is getting faster and shorter in duration.

Maybe its time for Football Sixty Eights..60.8...

60 mins of Football.
30minutes each half.
5min break.
8 players per team.
Goalie can only use their hands to block or catch shots.
No penalties.Instead goal awarded.
Yellow card.5 mins off.
Fouls.Automatic play on allowed.
No offside outside 25m from goal.
Wider goal.
Add flashing lights in goal, when a goal is scored.
4points for winning a game
1 points for a draw.
Bonus point for scoring 4 goals
