Round ball, no hands and rectangular pitch is a start.

I think Garry & Tim on SEN mentioned they may do AFLX with recently retired players as clubs were just using young kids and no-names and thus no-one was interest

Besides herald sun it actually hasn’t got that much attention but it’s back and they are trying to bring more big name players

Unless they do something to drastically alter the format this will be the last we see of it.

I don't see it going anywhere, the AFL will flog this to death as this is everything to do with finding a format that can be used to push other sports off rectangular grounds and they need their star players involved for it to get any traction.

Luckily enough, the AFL still doesn't have a clue how figure out the format. GAA works and is exciting on a smaller rectangular pitch because the goal is small and the mark doesn't exist so players have to work the ball forward in the hands to slice through defences and get a shot on goal. That isn't what AFL fans want to see though. They want to see big kicks, big marks and big goals and to do all that you need a big playing field. So they are stuck between a boring game of both teams taking potshots from miles away or they have to change the rules which make the game look nothing like their main product.

Its all just so painfully transparent. It's got nothing to do with creating a shorter, more exciting format ie sevens/20 20 and everything to do with a hostile takeover of the wider sporting landscape.

They're fine to be losing money off it, as long as it's pushing competing codes out of facilities at both the elite and grassroots levels then it'll pay off for them in the long term, as planned.

Yeah - that is the one concern. I don't know if it will be effective in that though.

as ridiculous as this concept is, it's fully sponsored, so I doubt it costs the AFL anything except a bit of embarassment

Am I the only one that thinks indigenous teams like the "deadlys" are a bit like segregation?

I just can't help think its like a modern day equivalent of the negro league in US baseball.

I just can't understand how this sort of thing is viewed as progressive. Its basically saying your aboriginally takes precedence over what you have achieved as a human being.

Doesn’t the NRL have an indigenous all star game or some naff?

Anyway, this AFLX is just the worst thing anyone has ever seen. It may not cost them any money, but it’s very costly in terms of dignity.

Pathetic.

The irony of this statement not lost on any football supporter:

“This week and the last few days it’s just been extraordinary,” Dangerfield said of the public criticism surrounding AFLX.

If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Don’t try to sell your hate to us all because that’s all I’ve seen from a lot of apparent leading journalists.

“I’m just gobsmacked at how many negative articles surround it. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, it’s not for you.

If there was a virus outbreak in Melbourne from the piss in alleyways and everyone died, the AFL as a competition would vanish with it. New leagues could be sustained in sa and wa but without afl money or influence the game would evaporate largely from other states.

There was a report that there were more people employed on the telecast of an aflw games than there were watching in nsw recently.

Heard the president of AFL team Western Bulldogs on ABC radio on the way to work this morning, very diplomatically said he wasn't interested at all in AFLX.

I wish he was asked if he's had any contact from Western United, specifically regarding potential use of Whitten Oval.
