In this formation he doesnt really have a spot that he excels in (neither does Mckay in my opinion). what he excels in is being a link between a DM and an AM or from side to side. He gets off the shoulder of his defender and has speed of ball movement. if you have a DM breaking up play and an AM as your creative player then he is the perfect link. same if you have a Deep lying play maker and a more attacking or box to box AM he is a very good link between the lines. i think his speed of ball movement, and speed between the ears is his strength.

I disagree (although I take your point about "in this formation").  He does have a good long pass but the team is not structured to utilise it.  Defensively he is very good at blocking passing lanes and has a high work rate at closing down opposition players.  He looked at his best when Broich was in the team (and Broich bought him into the play frequently) and at his worst with Bautheac (who simply refuses to pass to him).  He is more suited to a team who moves the ball quickly and retains possession more than Brisbane do at the moment.

I met with David Pourre this morning along with some other RSF members for a detailed Q&A on a wide range of topics, details will be posted later today and over the next few days

But on the coaching process Dave says they are at “the pointy end” of contract negotiations with 2 candidates and hope to close a deal shortly with a clear 1-2 preference along with a fall back option. No hints as to who the candidates are other than to say “press speculation has generally been off the mark, and the club is not briefing the press and treating the entire process as a confidential HR business process”.

Hopefully that means no Fowler, then.

I realise they haven't confirmed anything, but  did he give you an indication of when they would make the announcement and if the new coach would step in this year?

Good to hear they are open about it. Surely means they are pretty confident in the process they have undertaken (or delusional, however Pourre doesn't strike me as the delusional type).

@aok

When pushed on what “pointy end” meant it was that everything was agreed and it was just drafting up a mutually agreed contract.

All later stage candidates had to provide an assessment of the current squad, recommendations on who they thought they’d keep and why, and how they’d go about recruitment for next season ... if I understood it right they want the guy in asap sorting the squad out

Sorting out “Visa’s” slipped in to the conversation once suggesting at least one is none Australian.

Who do you believe ? If he had been having talks with the Roar he may not want it known .....or maybe he isn't in the frame at all ? ..we will know in a few weeks I guess .
I want to know as much as anybody but I am happy it is taking time ...it means they are looking closely at people and considering carefully . They may still get it wrong in the long run ( impossible to pick anyone and know for sure they will be a great coach)  but at least they will have eliminated as many uncertainties as possible.

To be honest, I think after the articles and statements that have come out this week, Kurz is done at Adelaide  He's gone against the owners which for a coach is a no go.
If that is the case and Kurz had a solid offer from the Roar, wouldn't he be keeping his mouth shut and just letting everything play out?
I think he is going up against the owners so that Adelaide's owners will get pressure from fans when they do eventually try to get rid of him. Creating an us vs them situation.

Re the ANZAC Day match. From the get-go Pourre made it very clear this is not just a game being played on a special day but rather an “annual event” that if supported becomes part of the tradition of the day.

They’ve been promoting this with government, corporate, schools, local associations and of course the RSL . That’s presumably where those additional ticket sales are coming from.

Interesting it’s also a designated “FFA game” and can be moved to another city if Brisbane doesn’t back it.

This page is becoming toxic

Well then I'll change the mood a bit by copying my reply to another thread. Thoughts?

Actually I think the probability of us winning the championship in the next 3 years is quite good, or at least not below any other contender.
The club is actually in quite a good position, training facilities are excellent with our new training base, we have a supportive and active MD and no back room issues like at CCM and at the roar previously. Our youth set up is one of the best in the country with a free academy and the youth team just won the championship. We have no money issues at the moment spending the full cap plus more. And the support staff are all mostly quality.
Our squad for next season is almost completely open, with only 6-7 players signed most of which are good quality (mauk, young, dwh, O'Toole, powel), we are not in a position were the new coach has limited options of what he can do with the squad. We will have 2 marquee spots available. We are in a ripe position for the new coach to come in and bring in the players that he wants/know can win the league and succeed.

Heres the update on the coaching situation. To put this in perspective there is frustration (especially by myself) at the quality of reporting on a few things with Marco and Val not fact checking stuff or seeking quotes from the club, or doing any real analysis ... we’re basically being fed click bait shit.

The RSF spoke with Pourre and suggested a fix of engaging directly with fan organisations and asking them to carry the message - it’s impossible to hold a decent debate without information - so last week he was on the Roarcast (podcast), this week with RSF, and next week others have been invited to get in touch and have a go ..

CLUB UPDATE (NEW COACH)| the following provides an update on discussions with David Pourre (DP) in relation to where BRFC are on finding a new coach. Please note, the answers provided are summaries only and, while we attempt to be as accurate as possible, should not be taken as verbatim quotations:

RSF Q: David, there’s been plenty of media speculation on the search for a new coach but virtually nothing from the club, why?

DP: The club treat this as a confidential HR process where any applicant, as in any job application, have the right to expect total confidentiality. So we have run a discrete, professional and publicly very quiet process respecting the confidentiality of everyone concerned.

RSF Q: There’s been a fair bit of media speculation including several names being mentioned, how do you respond to those?

DP: we don’t respond to those for the same reasons of confidentiality; I can say there has been a significant amount of misreporting including the mention of names who are not under consideration however, if we deny individual articles we’ll just encourage more speculation. As soon as we have something to say we’ll communicate with members and the wider fan base, until then - just look for direct quotes, or the absence of direct quotes, from club officials in any articles.

RSF Q: So where are you in your process?

DP: Basically we are at “the pointy end” and have identified our preferred candidates.

RSF Q: Can you tell us which coach (or coaches) are under consideration?

DP: No. we promised applicants confidentiality and we intend to keep that.

RSF Q: Some big names have been associated with the job in the media, the likes of Fowler and Ericsson for example, can you confirm if they were considered?

DP: Again no, we can’t confirm individual names. I can only say that everyone had to meet the same pre-set criteria and go through a rigorous assessment process

RSF Q: How many people applied for the position?

DP: We had 160 applications and we looked at every one of them and applied our initial screening process to reduce the list down.

RSF Q: How did you narrow down those applicants?

DP: We has a comprehensive set of criteria that we were looking for including whether they held the necessary coaching qualifications (A/Pro Licence) and then some of the criteria included things like whether they had coached at a similar sized club to Roar (or bigger), whether they had experience in a salary capped competition, whether they could demonstrate proven youth development, and whether they had knowledge or a good appreciation of the A-League.

RSF Q: What lessons have been learned from the past?

DP: We took this opportunity to build what we believe would be a robust process, one that could be used now and in the future. I think we created a good process, and while there can be no guarantees on any hiring appointment we can be comfortable we’ve done all we can to identify the best candidate.

RSF Q: Where did the applicants come from, domestic or overseas, and did the club approach any potential candidate directly?

DP: We had a good mix of both Australian and international candidates, there were more international applications than domestic probably due to the licensing requirements. And no, we didn’t approach anyone directly - only people that applied.

RSF Q: Did you consider NPL candidates?

DP: Yes we did, providing they met our criteria.

RSF Q: Some commentators are questioning the length of time the search is taking, what do you say to that?

DP: When we advertised we didn’t know whether we would get 10 or 100 applications so it’s hard to put a timeframe on it. In the end we got 160 applications and considered everyone of them. and then we had a thorough background research on candidates of interest. We’re moving through the process as quickly as we can but it takes time

RSF Q: Did you look for anything else?

DP: Yes, we looked for candidates who had done their research on BRFC, people who had shown an interest in us and understood a bit about where we’ve been and where we are now

RSF Q: Historically a new coach means major change behind the scenes, should we anticipate that?

DP: No, I don’t think so. Theres no anticipated need for changes within the football department, changes were made following last years review of the Football Department so all other supporting positions and processes are well established and stable so we will keep that.

RSF Q: So when can fans expect to hear something formally?

DP: We will announce as soon as we can but don’t want to be held to a target date, there’s too many variables

It would. The reason for asking the follow up question on NPL coaches was because the criteria seemed to rule them out, although he says it didn’t but they were prepared to make exceptions if there was a right candidate.

They’re in contract negotiations and the need for a “visa application” came up so it looks like the Preferred candidate is non-Australian.

The bit I liked was the analysis of the current squad and recommendations for recruiting to fix it - both the leading candidates had watched (said they’d watched?) all Roars games this year

First priority for the new coach should be finding a new, long-term leader/captain - someone to help the new coach rebuild the culture and character. This person IS NOT Jack Hingert. There is no one in the current squad with the qualities needed. We need someone signed to a 3-4 year deal and told - you are our captain, your first priority is to set the standard and lead by example - from the few games I’ve seen, I’d take Jem Karacan in a heartbeat (I'd feel a bit guilty taking him from the Mariners though).

@Proud Dad

It’s not hard to watch every A League game if you’re overseas right. I’d say (given the length of this process) any coach who’s applied should be able to comment first hand on our last 10+ games. If they haven’t watched ALL of the games how interested are they in Roar?

CLUB UPDATE | Following on from our interview with David Pourre on Friday last week, here’s a couple of further updates on the Adam Taggart transfer and the ANZAC Day match:

On Adam Taggart:

The club firmly denies the transfer fee is the $150,000 reported and that the fee is actually higher. Unfortunately the actual terms & conditions of the transfer are confidential by agreement between both clubs but DP said both BRFC, Suwon & Player/Agent were satisfied with the deal.

On the ANZAC Day match:

DP stressed this was much more than just “another home game” and was being treated appropriately befitting the special day it falls on.

This will be the only A-League game on ANZAC Day and the only professional sporting match-up in Queensland and will form part of FoxSports coverage starting with the A-League in Brisbane, then the AFL in Melbourne and concluding with the NRL in Sydney.

The extension to the HAL season this year (due to international breaks) made a regular season game possible and BRFC made a proposal to host a team, on an annual basis, on ANZAC Day at Suncorp Stadium. As such the FFA and FoxSports have been involved in planning the event and it is hoped to make this an annual Brisbane event.

Adelaide we’re selected as the opponents for this seasons match-up and discussions are on-going for next season with a proposal that Roar should play away in Adelaide for the Remembrance Day round in November, and then host Adelaide in the return match at Suncorp on ANZAC Day.

The club has been working with relevant parties locally to ensure the event is fitting and appropriate for the day and, although marketing of the event has yet to commence in earnest, early ticket sales are tracking towards a crowd of between 15,000 and 20,000; a figure that the club hopes to boost with a combined kids-go-free offer.

no quotes from the club (or anyone else for that matter) can we assume, given DP's comments, that it is not true then?

Honestly i would be ok with Fowler. he knows the game inside and out and his profile should be enough to attract players. He is a little green behind the ears (managerially speaking) but he has been putting in the work to get his badges. hopefully it is all sorted soon because we need a coach to start assembling the squad for next season.

My worry with any OS coach, is that the club wont finalise any deal until the visa has come through, and as we have seen previously this can take forever ( i would have thought particularly at the moment given the current political climate globally). So we could be waiting a long time to see any action.

It’s as much speculation as Kurz and all that went before. What DP said was don’t believe things without direct quotes which is fair enough, same holds true with this.
