They’d be smart to keep Eric, despite his temperament he is good. Finding 4 visa players will be tough, no need to make it 5 unnecessarily.

Fowler should be able to attract/recruit good players (should be able too) - but if he is hired I’d like to see him bring in a good assistant that’s been around a team on game day for a few seasons.

Davies is presumably staying on but no reason they wouldn’t carry a dual assistant as they did before?

We still have a critical need for a decent defence coach regardless of all else. Head coach or assistant with defensive strength would do.

I think a priority should be a captain. Someone late 20s,  early 30s with the intent of having them for at least 3 years. With Matty going we have no one who can provide the necessary on-field leadership.

Waz.....so you've changed your opinion of Eric......week or two ago you said he can $&@& off.

I'm on record as saying that was a bit strong as I've always been a fan and stated that. He is just frustrated with the poor performances.

Im not having a go, just wondering what's changed your opinion. We all frustrated mate, hey, but Eric has been one of our few bright lights.

@Jimo8

i haven’t changed my opinion on Eric, he’s a petulant little prick watching on from the stands yesterday - that’s not good enough. However, the rebuilding task is massive and one less signing will be a bonus.

Wenzhill-Halls is now proving to be the Pepper of the forward line, worth keeping as a squaddie but not A League standard.

Jets yesterday day showed its men v boys and our Academy is still tuning out boys, it’ll be a few more years before they’re leaving the Academy fit for the first team. There’s 5-8 kids who need to be nurtured in the coming years but we’re not ready for Brisbane Babes just yet

Roar need to copy Perth and Sydney before them and sign a squad of good 30-somethings otherwise we won’t be competing again next year.

Harsh on DWH. Yeah he took some wrong options, but still set up the goal and should have had a pen. Not many young strikers dominate in their first season.
The Jets are actually quite happy with the Brisbane Roar Academy. Such a shame that Champness and Jackson were considered not good enough by past Roar coaches.

DWH is worth persevering with in the squad but he has no first touch, no left foot, and doesn’t know when to pass. All skills he should have by now.

If if you think back through all the recent championship sides they don’t have a player like him as a starter, we shouldn’t either.

And like Pepper, he needs to play more so I’d drop him (and a few others) in to the NPL side next weekend and run them through to the end of June giving them an extra 8-10 games before going off on a break.

theres every evidence the May to Mid-October is deteriorating the talent we have because they spend as many months in pre-season as they do the actual season

Our illustrious ex-coach played in a few decent leagues despite having no right foot. Kewell’s right foot was not memorable. I recall DWH’s first goal for Roar was with his left? I don’t mind a young striker who’s a bit selfish. I agree with you about getting them some extra games. Playing 15 - 20 games a season is not enough at Dylan’s age.

Unless you are an out and out goal scoring machine or top notch poacher, a forward has to rely on constructive teamwork at the pointy end of the park to create opportunities.

We have not had the same team for any two consecutive games under DD, and the Aloisi coached players were head drilled based on positional play and Mauk and Taggart getting the ball.

When we get to the front third you can see our forward line basically standing in a line with the defenders, our backline in a line at the back, and no-one either capable or with the responsibility to run between the lines and create something.

Once Aolisi left, the entire playing system that the team worked through with pre-season and throughout the campaign became a stagnant and malignant influence on our ability to perform.

Under DD, having a different group of players and dynamic every game has made every game a training run for players as individuals to have a go and see what they can do. Without the mindset of a stable core of experienced and capable players the youth players are losing their way - it is great to have a couple of them in a solid team so they can continue to develop their minds and their exuberance can win matches.

Anyone who thinks our club is gone needs to step back and breathe - this season was wrecked by an Aloisi methodology that was entirely founded on a first team who knew the system down to every single play and sometimes variation based on specific opposition players. Players like Devere, who is a great defender, obviously could not remember the American style playbook, so despite his experience and skills was not favoured.

Our entire first team was injured or transferred out throughout the season - of course we are going to play rubbish football. The players who stepped in could not play the system as well as the ones who were out, and worse; when you play someone out of the position they have studied how are they meant to recall the specific plan when their muscle memory and experience do not give them anything to call on. I will go on record to say that the Aloisi system is probably a great option in a squad of 40 or so players - with at least 3 good players for every position - so there is always a replacement for any broken part of the system. It has proven incapable of working in a short team setup where you have 10 good players and some subs.

In lower leagues the quality of players alone can carry a season. In the top league that is not enough to run a campaign. And simply put, that is what went wrong this season and that is what players have to unlearn under the new coach.

We have quality in our youth - just unharnessed and undirected quality. Any reasonable coach with a pre-season to work through will have this team turned around - no doubt at all in my mind.

Relax and enjoy the occasion of Captain Matty's last game on Anzac Day regardless of the scoreline. Turn out in numbers for him, and for the club that is worth standing by.

And know that next season will not be the dismal failure of this year. It just will not be.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

@ Roar in me Blood

Fair enough post.

But you also highlight the challenge facing the club - not only does it have to rebuild a squad but it now has to rebuild a playing philosophy.

The loss of Sherman and a couple of other coaches behind the scenes might be quite telling - there’s a lot of work to be done and the question has to be - are the Bakries capable of getting it done or will they just paper over the cracks until the next time?

I hear you Waz - but surely the basis of good play is what they have all learned as they developed their playing skills - the Aloisi model is too far removed from the "play the game in front of you" thinking that players would have been spotted for in the first place.

I would expect it to be more of "go back to what you know and are good at and I will tweak what needs to be tweaked". Maybe I do not understand how hard that may be though.

Confirmed by the club:

Three-time Hyundai A-League Championship winner Henrique will depart Brisbane Roar following the conclusion of the Hyundai A-League 2018/19 season.

Fan-favourite Henrique, who has made 168 Hyundai A-League appearances & was a member of all three of the Club’s Championship-winning squads, says Brisbane will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I want to thank the first people who gave me the opportunity to come to Australia & Brisbane - a special mention to Frank Farina,” Henrique said.
“I would like to thank all the people I have worked with - the players, all the staff & especially the fans - they have been great for me at all times & everything we do is for them.

“My first game was special, as was my first goal in Brisbane Roar colours. The first Grand Final win will be a great memory that stays with me for a long time.

“At this point in time I have to take care of my injury. That will give me time to look at all opportunities to then make a clear decision to continue playing or transition perhaps into coaching.”

Affectionally nicknamed the ‘Slippery Fish,’ the elusive striker is the second-highest goalscorer in Club history with 45 Hyundai A-League goals to his name for Roar.

Known for his knack of finding the back of the net in crucial moments, he scored in two separate Grand Finals, both in the second half of extra time in the 2010-11 & 2013-14 deciders.

He will also live long in the hearts of the Roar faithful after scoring the decisive spot-kick during a penalty shootout in the 2010-11 Grand Final.
Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre today thanked Henrique for his incredible service throughout 10 seasons at the Club.

“A champion of the club, a people’s champion and all round genuine and humble person, Henrique will always be in the hearts and minds of Brisbane Roar, its sponsors, members and fans,” Pourre said.

“Respected by many throughout the football family, Henrique’s inspiring contribution to football in Australia will never be forgotten.”
“The Club is pleased to announce it is currently finalising its past player recognition program with our Grand Final hero to receive life membership for his outstanding service & contribution to the Club and football in Australia."

Noticed Rahmat Akbari was added back to the Brisbane players page? Heard some whispers a while back about him only being interested in staying at the Vuck for the year (length of his contract). Good young player, hope wherever he ends up next season, he gets more consistent time.

Would be happy to have him back for the rebuild. I was genuinely disappointed he didn't get more time at Victory, although it's understandable given how much midfield talent they have.

I'm keen for a young Brisbane developed team with few older players for experience and leadership. Akbari and caletti need to be playing more.

On a aside should we try and get brattan back? He's off contact end of this season and can't see him going anywhere in the city group.

if Brattan, Donachie and Brillante aren’t on Roars shopping list then something is wrong.

Id have a look at both Krishna and Kosta as potential marquees next season as well.

2 CB’s from overseas and that would be close to job done if they could land that lot.

thete is an informal agreement between clubs not to make player announcements “in season”, they do happen but they’re rare and we normally have to wait until both sides are finished to hear anything.

Its entirely possible Eric has signed for Victory or Brattan to Roar, we just wouldn’t know about it.
