He was supposedly sacked because the FFA brainiacs didn’t believe he could turn around the recently identified (but according to most players, imaginary) ‘toxic environment’. Yet in less than a week he turns around the most toxic team environment in the ALeague?
Total embarrassment for Gallop and Nikou who seem to have become as transparent as Emma Highwood - ie totally invisible.

I think declaring he turned around the most toxic team environment in the A-league is more than a little premature. Lets see how they go in the next few weeks.

You don’t think getting an away win after 20 odd games without one and after an 8-2 drubbing is a turnaround?

It is a turnaround but there is a lot of deep seated problems at CCM that go way beyond the playing group. We will see if the team is really going to better or whether it was a one off performance.

I would say the coach can only be responsible for turning the playing group around ... not fixing other issues. Wouldn’t you?

Yes, of course, but one win does not prove he has done that.

Reid apology here.

https://twitter.com/TheWorldGame/status/1134250170051248128

And FFA board member Heather Reid has apologised to Stajcic. "I apologise unreservedly for the damage, distress and hurt that I have caused to Alen Stajcic as a professional football coach and long-time servant to, and advocate for, Australian and women’s football."

Don't see how Heather Reid keeps her spot on the board.

Might be a lawsuit coming her way as well.

It would appear that Stajic's legal team are doing a good job so far.  Reid's unprofessional behavior was disgusting and the targeting of Stajic clearly illustrates she has no place on an FFA board.

I'd say the apology would be to stave off legal proceedings.  He's been paid out, had his reputation restored and he can now move on.

Any legal challenge will cost him a bomb and, seeing we're not America, any damages awarded may not be worth the exercise.

Considering the precedent set in the Rebel Wilson defamation case it is probably worth his while to do so. Especially considering the money that is available for football coaches around the world, you could make a very strong legal argument that his character was defamed and because of that he lost significant future earnings, by using the Rebel Wilson case as a precedent you would most likely be successful, I'm sure he wouldn't have come to the Mairners if he could have gone anywhere else and his legal team can extrapolate on that.

Karma is strong, 'if only you knew' mantra was disgraceful and amateurish which has typified our sport for too long.

Lucky Staj has a job at CCMFC if not he would have a legitimate reason to sue the FFA and get compensated.

The damage done to the FFA as a brand will hurt them especially in the short term.

Also, a few heads should roll especially Reid but also people communicating the message to the media including the CEO David Gallop who has handled it very poorly.

Another sad day for the game but at least the truth is out.

There’s nothing wrong with the sacking of Staj on a performance basis. The Matildas struggled in 2018 compared to previous years, and Staj was not the person to make an impact at the WC. Generating a lame excuse to justify the sacking is the problem, especially when they didn’t need to, the results spoke for themselves.

Arnie, should be gone. People were calling for Ange’s head, but his results were certainly no worse than Staj’s.
The Asian Cup was a debacle, with only 1 regular time win (over Vietnam) out of 5 games. The semi final get out of jail stoppage time equaliser and shoot out win over Thailand was rubbish, seeing that we beat them 5-0 only weeks earlier.
The friendlies against England (who dominated despite the late drawing goal, there were 2 fairly clear penalties denied and a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside) and especially France were poor and showed that the team were not a genuine contender in Europe.
The Home loss to Chile was bad, as was the Algarve Cup loss and draw against Portugal who couldn’t even qualify for the WC after Home and away qualifying loses to Italy and Belgium

That's a fair sentiment, I'm getting more skeptical of the national team as time goes by.

The point of this thread & the surrounding discussion has always been the utterly despicable way in which he was forced out & those that enabled it.

If the FFA had come out & said " Stajic was sacked due to poor form & poor results, here is our new coach Ante " from the beginning then people would have moved on straight away.

Stajcic was possibly sacked to allow a female to be installed as coach.
Milicic had to be installed to cover up the cluster f.ck created.
Sacking the national coach just before the World Cup without any serious losses  and  a for a coach with a good track record and a coach who had created a cash cow for FFA  made absolutely no sense .
The Matildas are still hitting above their weight.Suggestions they are not playing above their abilities  are way off. This is an over achieving team ,with a domestic competion that is over before it begins.
As if FFA knows best when it comes to Football on the field?
No Socceroo coach could survive if Stajcic was sacked based on results!

Yup. If they really didn't think Stajcic was the right fit, they would have found a world class foreign coach and put them in for the WC immediately. Had that occurred, most people would have accepted the decision and the FFA's attempts to improve the squad. This didn't happen because of the vendettas against Stajcic.

So funny.
1. Zelic uses her media platform (and information from FFA sources) to suggest that she 'knows' that Stajcic has clearly done something really bad - thereby justifying the FFA decision.
2. Zelic attempts to walk away from her earlier assertions - without any apology to Stajcic
3. Fair minded football fans call her out on this unacceptable behaviour
4. paulc criticises fans for picking on poor Lucy

Will Paulc apologise too?
