He's going to use the Villi model learned at the Uni of Notre Dib, 1 superstar for 6 duds not realising you need 6 replacements to fill a squad...

I'm not after a superstar. I know we can't afford it.
But if you get rid of guys like Lichaa and Olive who were on above min wage and replace them with mon wage players and use the dead money from termination of Klem or Mbye contracts, then all of sudden you have a modest amount left to sign a decent player for around 400k maybe 500k.

That's all we can do for next year. But of course some moron jumped the gun and decided to buy another second rower who no doubt is paid handsomely otherwise he wouldnt displace himself from a champion Melb team or move interstate.

We have really learnt nothing.

That's why it is important we tap a high paid player (or players) now and get them looking for another club. We need to free the cash from top earners not the fringe guys on 200k who will be replaced by another fringe guy on 200k.

I cant remember the end of contracts for Graham, Woods, Klemmer and Mbye but I would think 1 would be end of this season leaving us with 150-200k to play with.

I'm hoping we have not spent more than 350-400k on Stimpson. Otherwise we have rocks in our head.

Why do people think we can just tell a bloke to look elsewhere and they will, and more to the point which of our blokes would be wanted elsewhere if they did look elsewhere???...

While we are kicking ideas around here, that is mostly just fans having a chat.

I've seen no evidence that the club doesn't know what they are doing, on the contrary, so far they are managing a difficult situation very well.

We will be able to judge when we see the team line up for 2021 and probably not much before that..

i'm also not suggesting it will be smooth sailing, every game is important and every signing is important...

I think we need to generate some momentum in 2020 that suggests the club is moving in the right direction, that will help with recruiting players for 2021. That momentum has to be improved on field performances and/or a new coach.

So while we are only replacing 7 players we want to replace them with 7 better players, while that isn't hard we want 7 players that can make a difference in the hope that 3-4 of them make a difference.

I've still got confidence, we will make the right moves, the only bad decision we made in the last 2 years was extending Lichaa, at the time it didn't look like a bad decision. Out of 7 we can probably afford 1 bad decision, the other 6 need to be good.

HD, I'm not convinced we need to replace the 7.
There are 2 or 3 or maybe even that are surplus to our requirements or we have exhausted all our time giving them a chance.

Martin, Nu Brown and Danny must be kept as I believe they offer something and are actually playing first grade at the moment.

I dont think we will find better options to replace them with on current form. If they chase larger contracts elsewhere, then so be it.

To tell you the truth, out of all the players off contract up until '20 (and there's 24 of them), I'd only mark as definite keepers at this stage (and even they might drop off) - Jacko, Lewis, R Smith and Wakeham. A couple more are probables.

The rest can play for their contracts as far as I'm concerned, some may make it, I reckon most won't - including your lot you named there.

So may have tried, so many have had their chance. I just think this squad needs a renewal, a deep renewal, and soon we'll have a unique opportunity to do it. if I was umming and ahhing about any of them I'd err on the side of punting them and wouldn't look back.

We need something to break.

I read somewhere only recently that we are paying 150k. Not sure if it was Klem or Woods. I would have thought Klem as I cant see sharks paying Woods 650k of his reported 800k we got him for. Klem maybe but not woods. I'd guess we are paying a good 300k for woods.

How can they possibly be?
Who did they pay in order to back-end these blokes.

I sense a complete level of incompetence that borders onto fraud. I request a Royal Commission in the Dib_Castle tenure dammit.

We are not playing for Klem because Newcastle desperately wanted him,how many of our players do you think other clubs desperately want?

I'd love Kevvie as coach. The only problem is you have to make sure the Broncos, Cowboys, Titans and most importantly and probable "Potential" 2nd Brisbane Team" have their coaching positions filled for the next five years because the day one of them is available is the day Kevvie asks for a release from his contract.

But I said when we sacked Des we should've looked at Kev. But i do worry he'll go home first opportunity.

Here's my view AT THIS STAGE for the end of '20:

Morgan Harper 2020:  Playing for contract. Currently - definitely keep
Jeremy Marshall-King 2020: Playing for contract. - may be keep for depth
Nick Meaney 2020: Playing for contract. Currently - probable keep
Marcelo Montoya 2020: Currently - maybe keep
Dylan Napa 2021 - Contracted --- not 100% sure
Chris Smith 2020:  Playing for contract. Currently - possible keep
Renouf To'omaga 2020: Playing for contract. Currently - probable keep

Otherwise I agree.

Also Adam Elliott - definite keep -

I'm keeping more because it a squad of 30 and you need some lower paid players that can fill in as needed
If we have quality in the right positions, then those more marginal players look a lot better,
It all depends on who we can get, I mostly want the good players at 9 and 7 so happy to pay more in those positions, alternatively some guy who plays 3-4 games are year at wing or centre, then wage is more important than quality.  Same with a forward we hope mostly plays reserve grade and only comes off the bench for limited minutes 3-4 times a year, minimum wage for that guy.

What? You are kidding arent you?

Nathan Brown came out halfway through last year on NRL360 and made it clear they have money for a top prop and even threw Klemmers name in the mix.

If you dont think some dirty work was done behind the scenes to "get his attention" and "make him want out" then you are deluded.

Go back and watch the episode. Ben Ikin felt uncomfortable even talking about it. It was bad.

But back to my point about allowing them to seek offers..... the whole idea is for them to secure a contract while they can. If you are telling them to look elsewhere, you are giving them the chance for a seamless transition and room to negotiate- not feel rushed with the first offer.

The club loses nothing.

I also like Kevvie, but it is hard to get the coach you want, and there are high risk coaching options who can go badly wrong...

Outside of Kevvie, I would like a coach with a good win record and a good track record on improving players, doesn't have to be NRL could be England, or even reserve grade, could be an ex-NRL coach, provided he has some results and not too much baggage.

Some ex-player who has never coached is a definite no... no matter how smart he seems to be.....

Mostly there is a reason why ex-coaches are ex-coaches...

The club is not obliged or can be bullied to pay any difference from an inflated contract.

They can just say fekk off.

Contract severance is a 2 way street. Both parties have to agree to it. If not, contract continues.

I'm not disputing the facts in the case of Klem, Newcastle wanted him, how many of our other players to do clubs want?

Most of our player who are overpaid are hoping we extend them, managers have higher short term priorities.,... moving players on isn't as easy as you imagine...

Exactly, if we have an over paid player who isn't performing, no other club is going to offer to pay his fully salary.

Tell him we think he is over paid and we are not going to extend him, will not change much, he might be hoping for an extension, but isn't going to take a cut in pay or move on early, unless he gets a good offer.

If anyone thinks we should keep all of the palookas that are off contract they are off their heads. We are last with these players aren't we?

How can they possibly be?
Who did they pay in order to back-end these blokes.

I sense a complete level of incompetence that borders onto fraud. I request a Royal Commission in the Dib_Castle tenure dammit.

The clubs been clear that is the case... the NRLol have put an end to heavily back ended contracts with our situation being a significant driver...
obviously there were some serious corporate governance issues, and the members sorted that out... the legacy however still remains...

I'm not disputing the facts in the case of Klem, Newcastle wanted him, how many of our other players to do clubs want?

Most of our player who are overpaid are hoping we extend them, managers have higher short term priorities.,... moving players on isn't as easy as you imagine...

Let's say Foran is on 800k and a team wants him for 600k. That means we can offload him for a loss of 200k and have 600k on his replacement.

Same goes for Tolman and Jackson. Say they are on 600k and other clubs offer 400k. We lose 200k but surely we can get decent first graders for 400k......

Question is.....are they really back-ended......and are they even worth 600k or 400k?

If not, some serious questions must be asked as to why they were locked into such deals in the first place.....
