Looking at the USA v Thailand WWC thread, we should just consolidate the football threads for a start.

Bowen

Have done some thinking and have an idea, and I am note sure how the forum will react but would welcome, feedback to see if it’s a good idea or the worst suggestion ever made on the forum.

But first a couple of little thing that drives me crazy, a breaking story can have multi people starting a threads and for me it makes sense that’s mods would move the latter threads to the one that was started first. Second like many the name calling and so on needs to kept in check otherwise why come back.

Now back to my idea and its possible it’s the worst ever suggestion or makes a lot of sense.

Some framing to start with, mainstream media gives few Football stories and forums in the say early days of forums where were people could spread good news and mention the positive things that never made the media… in fact back in the day Football stories were rare so forums provided a place to go.

Today Forums have competition from, various other online platforms. Meaning we need to make the site worth a visit.

Finally… OK OK … the idea.. the mods create a concept of forum journalist / writer or what ever name you wanta call it. The idea is posters could submit to the mods essentially a Football article for there judgement that this is a mod recommended and supported thread. The articles be between 500 & 750 words and be reasonably well written and written in a way to encourage debate highlighting a particular aspect of Football in Australia. Smaller threads  as always could be started by anyone and key articles as now published with a link.

Sounds like a very good idea, but I wouldn't worry about the length of the article.  A well written 250 word article giving fans an update on a particular team's training in the off-season could be just as interesting as a 750 word piece and may bring some new people to the forum,.

In NodeBB you could create a group called "Forum Writer" "Researcher" or the such, then make it invite only. Anyone who creates content like you suggested could get invite by KA himself for what it's worth. You can create groups for specific tasks of the forum "Moderator" "Social Networker" etc

Many many many maybe too many moons ago a group of people [me included] believed our lack of media coverage was so poor we created our own little magazine [online] and it was amazingly successful... many of the writers went on to become journalist ... below is a link to some of the mags .... We stopped as the media picked up and as I said many of those in the mag went to work in the media.

As I said no idea if this would work on this site, but the gist of it is some threads would be somehow marked as a mods approved article / story / event or whatever name it may go by.

Bowen we don't need the pictures etc but below are some examples of the magazine and how well it was written, and how many articles...

I offer this as an idea to make the forum different, and I believe it would encourage many who don't come because of its increasing toxic nature to make it a first choice open to see what it is.

Anywho here are some links to """Half Time Heroes"" BTW all articles were read and approved by the mods before publication.

There have been some great ideas posted by members.

I’m just hoping they can be implemented.

Maybe Kevin Airs needs to peruse this thread?

It would be interesting to know how some of the people who love conflict on the internet are in face to face contact off forum?

My guess is they are angry, but too cowardly to confront others face to face and diss out abuse.

The Internet is a great place for them to express how macho they can be by banging on keys.

There is is a clear message on this thread about most wanting to discuss football in a civil manner on this forum.

We have seen many posts from former regulars, which has been beneficial.

I'm being positive.

My concept as the progenitor of  this thread, was to ascertain the thoughts of forum posters - the many positive ones .

We have had a lot of input  from many former regular posters, and current regulars.

I see a dichotomy between two groups:

1. Proactive.

2. Reactive.

1.  Proactive posters who are quite positive and post here to  engage in football discussion and access football news. Many of these people start threads about football. They are usually  disinterested in conflict on the internet.

2. Reactive posters who whinge about others and seek internet conflict.  They never start any football threads, but criticise others who do. Moreover, when a critical mass of these negative cynics comprise the majority of posters on any forum, they drive most of group 1 away. Consequently,  the forum dies.

There are obviously some who are a combination  of 1 and 2.

In this thread many of 1 have clearly expressed why they haven't posted here for a while,  or regulars of 1 have expressed more ideas how to improve the forum.  Pertinently, many in group 2 don't like what they read expressed by group1.

If you are reading this, Kevin, in the interests of preserving the forum, listen intently to what group 1 has to say - and - act on as much as possible.

I know you'd like to kick quite a few of group 2 where the does not shine - and - off the forum.

Why don't you ever start a thread about any issue in football, Victor?

I've yet to see you do it in 13 years of football forums.

You have plenty of ideas criticising those who do.

What have you contributed to this threat that is proactive, champ?

Your last post is evocative of your negative attitude.

Here is an idea, why don't you provide a precursory synopsis of your last book on football you wrote?

I'd eagerly look forward to it, instead of your constant moaning and negativity.

On psychology, I have a degree in it.

[Posting in AF for visibility]

G’day

It’s no secret that activity levels on this beautiful and once-vibrant forum are at all-time lows. If you’re reading this right now, it means you care even a little bit about this place, and probably have some ideas on how we can breathe life into it again.

Over in the mod subforum we've been brainstorming some ideas but really need a whole lot more brainpower, hence this call to arms.

I’d like to request 3 things from everyone:
1. How did you initially discover the forums?
2. What’s kept you around?
3. Any ideas for acquiring new users?

e.g. for me:

1. Article comments linked to the forum. This was how I and many others actually discovered the forum’s existence in the first place. I was a commenter for a good few years before even realising there was a forum connected. InsideSport still gets a decent amount of traffic who visit for the articles, and it seems like the lowest hanging fruit for getting new users involved.

2. Initially it was Joffa keeping everyone up to date with EVERYTHING. Legit, the FFT forums were almost entirely my one-stop-shop for Aussie football news because Joffa would scour the internet daily and collate all the relevant stories for everyone. Is there any way we can beg him to come back? (I don't know him outside of the forum)

3. Kind of already summarised above, but my two ideas are re-connect the forum to the articles, and bring back Joffa.

I know we're all a negative bunch sometimes, but can we please keep all criticism in this thread constructive/as positive as possible? No negative comments about other forum members here please - save that for another day when we hopefully still have a forum to express said feelings...

1/ This was the only place where you could discuss Australian football with like minded people that loved the sport without saying its shit. Also there was a massive amount of quality posters and it made this place feel like home for some reason. I guess oz football was going well at the time as well helped before FFA ran the sport into the ground.

2/ I don't  know any other forums where people discuss Australian football if i did know i would have left already.

3/ Try and get all the original posters back who made this place amazing ie Joffa with the constant articles he would find like bowmen said.

This place has become so bitchy and full of snowflakes like joyful penguin.

As I have said in the past, forums are now dead. It's a dated form of communication. Something that in general has been dying off for the past 5 years. Evident across all forums I am on except possibly one which somehow always attracts new users. Social media has taken over, I'm on a few Australian football groups on facebook which have far more activity and discussion than this place.

I've seen it all in the past on forums I was once part of, suggestions to merge sub forums etc creates some activity and gives a "boost" visually but in reality it will slowly keep dropping off. It's a form of communication for old heads. You won't be seeing many new younger users (16-21) joining here when they join facebook groups out of convenience.

Just reality, but yes having the comments on articles link to the forum was good.

I use FB a lot,  particularly for political activism, travel, social events,  news, but many don't want to disclose their identity in football discussions on the internet .

100%

When I invested a shit tonne of time into making that NPL players Thread in SF, I assumed people would visit that part of the forum more often. considering it is essentially a massive part of Aus Football.

It is annoying that people bring up threads on AF about NPL players who have been in good form and could be worth a shot in the AL when there is a thread dedicated to NPL players and there current whereabouts and updates. I think this could be a massive thing if it was in AF.

Since no one really bats an eye to State football I've pretty much given up on it. Much like the rest of the forum.

A real shame to read this, DS98.

I seem to remember you having many  insights into youth football and the HAL YL in Melbourne.

I found your posts really informative.

I also confuse you with another poster I was going to meet up with In Tas, and whose son played for Melb City Youth and was a Joey.

I really enjoyed them. Your contributions have been missed, mate.

I'm sure many others have missed them too.

Jeez , why do we want to over complicate everything nowadays , soon we will have to have a degree in journalism to post on here ffs , it’s meant to be about football discussion and a bit of fun not “NodeBB” whatever the fuck that is.

Surely you must  see merit in the proposition  that if nothing is done, this forum will die?

Would love to know you thoughts on the impact trolls like Colin Oscopy had on football anarchy?

I thought FA was synonymous with troll mating season - and - multis were a prerequisite?

Surely, you aren't going to pontificate that it was a forum comprised of paragons of virtue, AJF?

It is rumoured FA probably only has  circa 8 posters left and that nobody really knows who is who on it. Are you ECP, Chips Rafferty, Ionio, Ram, Colin Oscopy, Edude, etcetera? They tell me once all those trolls became the mainstays of the forum, it imploded didn't it?

Surely, you are not advocating it as a successful paradigm for FTBL Forum to emulate are you?

You can't be serious.

I've heard this repeatedly.

But one can't participate and assume anonymity on FB.

I've looked repeatedly, and used Search to find a post Benjamin made in this thread about people not accepting that there needs to be Promo/Releg and 20 odd pro teams to create many more stories in the football media.

I can't find it.

Oh dear, imagine the hypocrisy of admitting to being a troll that should have been banned and trying to save FA because 442 was dead and yet here we are, less than 12 months later and your bleeding heart is now trying save 442.

If this were to become a viable, and bigger, football forum a few things would need to occur as a potential football site to replace a mooted, defunct 442.

1. There needs to be a link to a parent website with a lot of football articles linked to this site. Without football content, most genuine FA members have left. About 10 enjoy abusing each other about nothing. A minority want to engage in this behaviour. Essentially, these guys abuse each other with allegiances changing all the time. There could be an opportunity for the FA site owners to make money with links to other football sites as the number of hits increase through new members signing up as they follow the football articles. Businesses love advertising on sites that generate a lot of hits.

2. The hide users/mute/block mechanism would need to be installed on Football Anarchy. On 442 one can install this mechanism and read nothing that a few obnoxious individuals post. This would allow those who love acrimonious exchanges to continue as they do. Those who don't want to participate in this behaviour could read none of their posts. It could end up with few reading their posts - incurring minimal responses. It also provides mods with far less work.

3. There would have to be some more consistent admin and moderation than there currently is on FA.

I admit to being the most obnoxious poster on FA posting under a satirical, facetious, parodying, troll account. Anywhere else CO and AJF should've been banned. I just can't believe, and others too, what CO and AJF has been allowed to troll on FA with no repercussions! The FA posters targeted by CO and AJF have been muted elsewhere where one wants to engage in more genuine football discussion.

The normative concept of this football forum potentially existing as an an ideal paradigm, is paramount over its empirical history to date.

Hopefully, FA rebrands itself.

Good luck.
