My understanding is ROD is under the cap. He’s getting paid way less than Taggart who was also under the cap.

Correct. There is no marquee criteria.

My concern would more be about the club over paying for players. Waz has said our marquees are usually paid between $500,000-$750,000 a season (correct me if I am wrong Waz). I really hope O'Donovan isn't one of our highest paid players. 

I think the statement on ROD is BS. He’s not being paid much more than $200k I’d expect, which is what a top squad player typically gets. 

Both Berisha and Taggart were reported on $375k and both were in the cap, and RODs not earning that level at his age 

There is no criteria. The designation is around being exempt from the salary cap so typically you’d exempt your top 2 earners and pay the rest more ... so ROD could be on $200k and be exempt

Have to agree about Neville.  Just send Ingham to Perth and leave it at that.

The comment “surely we can do better” has to be said in the context of the salary cap though. 

Jacob Pepper is the perfect example, can “we do better” for the same salary we’re paying Pepper? 

And in this case Ingham is a squad liability at Roar - he’s neither good enough for a defender or winger so needs to go. Neville is at least a defensive upgrade and, quite surprisingly, a much needed over-30’s and experienced signing in a squad that’s shaping up to be a lot younger than recent years (and a lot younger than SFC and Glory squads that have run away with titles). 

Looking at the confirmed squad and the rumours, we still look worryingly short in defenders. 

Waz, you're right about Ingham, the kid is a liability  The main point when people say "we can do better" is that Fowler has indicated he wants to play fast, attractive football (which has encouraged the fans). If he brings in another player (starter or squaddie), then they need to fit with the playing "philosophy".  Something I don't think Neville does.  I have not seen enough of the rumoured signings to comment on their style of play, but from my observations of Neville, he doesn't fit the philosophy, he is just a average defender.  

To be honest I don’t really recall Neville and his style do you’re one over me there. 

I guess the question is - is he being brought in as a potential starter or just as a squadie? 

The next question would be - what formation will RF play? In a 4 at the back you’d want fast mobile wing backs, in a 3 at the back you don’t, there you want steady and stable defenders 

I’m convinced we’ll see a 3-5-2 from Fowler so a back three of: 

O’Tolle, New CB, Hingert

in reserve 

Bowles, Pepper, Neville 

A 3-5-2 would be interesting.  No love for Reardon and Powell?  I would take both ahead of Bowles and Neville (assuming that they have an experienced CB and mid near them).  

Powell is 17 and wont be ready for two more years. Reardon is a dark horse but his performances last year were shocking. 

I’m not overly convinced by O’Toole either which has me thinking maybe Neville is the third defender in a back 3 including the New CB and Hingert?
