Agree, great discussion fellas. Good to see that all opinions are respected and no one is getting antsy disagreeing with anyone (as quite often happens elsewhere).

Thanks MCG.  I'm hoping City look up too.  The League would benefit so much from a strong City side playing good football.  Very glad to see the back of Joyce.

City were so exciting to watch a few years back under JVC.  Let's hope we see than again.

Has there been any indication the RF is going for 3 at the back?

I am interested with these new players how this will turn out if we do. Im still thinking its going to 433.

How did everyone go with the annual “did he have a haircut, or is that a new player” test, I’m confident I’ve spotted Akbari, Powell and Freke between the photos and videos.

Waz i agree with your analysis of the two types of 3 at the back but the telling part (particularly with perth) is where you put the defensive cover.

Perth typically had their defensive cover as the left and right 'wingback ' in Franjic and Davidson. they were the ones in their style of play that found themselves in the defensive lines covering. It was not Killkeny and definitely not Juande. Killkeny and Juande were definitely in the midfield lines and very rarely fell into the defensive line as cover. Also (i feel i bit like a nit picker here) but perth typically did not fall into either of your formations. Their attacking line was typically 2 behind a striker (though it was very fluid particularly when keogh did not start and they played castro up front like in the GF)

they were playing

Chianase              Ikon              or                      castro                   ikon
               Castro                                                              Keogh

though next season with Bruno and Keogh i suspect they will play with 2 up front more often.

i dont know how we will set up but it is telling that Neville was Franjics back up at perth and very rearly was utilised at and of the back 3 positions. similarly i dont think Mauk has the right skill sets to play the defensive cover role (where he would end up in the defensive line covering). in fact the more i look at the players signed the less confident i am in the formation he will play. we dont seem to have the right players for any of the formations.

                           young
           McGing? Aldred  Gillesphie

Neville/hingert    Oneil    Mauk    Inman
                             Oshay
                 Roy                   Halloway

In that formation the 2 CM would be cover defence why would you have hingert/neville in the mid-field by waz's assessment they should be midfielders and getting forward and crossing is not in their repertoire. also McGing would be a big weak point in that formation. 442 sort of fits

                          young
Neville/hingert   Aldred  Gillesphie   Otoole
                           Mauk   Oneil
            Oshea                              Inman
                 Roy                   Halloway

we just seem to be missing a CB for 3 at the back to work in any of the formations because i dont think Hingert, neville or mcging really fit the CB role and if we are still running with bowles or pepper as starting CB's we are in trouble.

i forgot about McGing,  he did play a holding role at CCM on occasion as well,  i could see Mcging and Pepper being used as utilities across the back three and at 6 at times.
Mells is Mf cover
Has Bowles Re signed?  - he could also play across the back three as has played CB and Full back throughout his career.  Before he did his knee he was very good for us..
I'm nervous about the Wings/wide MF only because the players we have signed are completely unfamiliar to me (except for Inman) and therefore i see it as a weakness,  Would be good to sign a decent A League experienced Winger that can cover both flanks ..  a player like Chris Harold who has gone down the pecking order at Perth or even Nathan Burns ?

Bowles triggered a one year extension on his contract last season based on number of appearances  (then promptly got injured and we didn’t see him again).

I personally think Fowler is just about done with signings although I’d like to be surprised. I think we’ll get one more midfielder but probably as a squaddie (although it’s noticeable Brats hasn’t signed anywhere yet so hopefully we’re in an arm wrestle for him).

all the debate at the moment presumes 3-at-the-back with no actual evidence it’s what he will do but let’s stick with that.

The debate over over where the defensive cover comes from, outside wide or inside as 6,s, is where all this hinges - if we knew what RF was thinking we could assess the squad. Without that insight we are guessing.

He doesnt appear to have signed any wingbacks or wingers to my eye. Holloway could be a wide midfielder - he apparently has pace - but without knowing more about the other players it’s hard to guess.

After August 1 the A-League clubs are in charge of the A-League,Womens league and NYL...and most importantly their own intellectual property... and have said they will invest heavily in progressing their clubs.
It will be interesting to see what this brings at the Roar..e.g. if the Roar buy a marquee  they can market him any way they want and receive all profits ...they can sell shirts and receive all profits (well most) ,they can make and control their own website, make commercial deals  etc ....this change will be massive.....if the Bakries make the most of it ....!!!!
I am fascinated to see what happens now ...because now the Bakries have no excuse to not invest !

There has to be a reserve keeper signed, the fact they haven’t promoted Freck suggests they’re still looking. I think that would make 19 in total so (add one more U23 player) 20 in total.

No rumours but there is room, possibly even for a marquee or two.

As I mentioned on the Milligan thread, it will be interesting seeing the comments around our League One players now that our esteemed NAtional Team captain has signed for a League One outfit, albeit with ambitions of heading up the totem pole.

Yeah, the double standards shown have been appalling, very little “football discussion” and lots of trolling.

I would have thought RF might have signed a marquee of some notoriety. I'm not saying someone like Del Piero but a lesser known player was my thinking. Possibly someone  like Honda.

The question is why though?

Admittedly that seems to be the source of some discontent amongst some posters - the thought that Fowlers name would attract “a big name”.

But any “big name” is going to be at the wrong end of their career and pushing mid 30’s, there’s nothing wrong in that but Fowler has clearly gone another route and a lot of his signings are players he could take with him (and for a fee) if he’s successful and moves on to a Championship club like a Derby or Forest.

Fowler seems to have a plan - and that’s refreshing to me.

With the HAL clubs soon to control their own destiny, its quite likely some big marquee names could be signed up.
Unfortunately for Roar we have no visa spots left.

Looking forward to next season, what do people think will be a pass mark for RF?

Being  realistic, there is next to no chance a manager in his first season of coaching and with a completely new squad will win the League.
You can almost guaranteee the top two spots will be taken by PG and SFC.
MC,MV and AU will be up there too.
Which means we are fighting with the rest for sixth place and maybe fifth if one of the top teams under performs.
WSW will most likely improve, especially having a home again.
NJ always beat us and still have a solid core from last year.
CCM,WP and WU look the weakest.

So fifth place for me is a pass.

A pass for me in any season is any 2 of the following
1. top 3 finish
2. win a piece of silverware
3. Out of the group in ACL

Robbie can only compete for 2 of those given last years debacle which makes it harder for him to achieve a pass in my eyes, but that is the pressure of being in charge.

I can see a conceded pass on the first KPI where we are within a few wins of third and circumstances have caused us to miss. Losing in the GF (League or Cup) would also allow for a conceded pass on the 2nd point as well.

FMD you’re a pessimist 😁

Glory are fucked - Dads Army and the ACL will kill them, lucky to make finals this year.

SFC - probably my early favourites, their signings look safe, solid, but good.

Victory - who knows, they’ve been shit recently but still up there. Kurz could be like Clough taking over at Leeds or the catalyst for a title.

Adelaide have signed no one, so wait and see what quality they sign and how good they are without Kurz.

Jets, Mariners in a budget, and Nix have been gutted so who knows about those three.

Western - with Mr Loyalty at the helm - will have a good first season and WSW will too.

City may struggle. They just appointed a coach who needs “his own team” but is being given someone else’s.

Its pretty open imo and Roar could easily slot in anywhere between 2 and 10th place. Granted 1st place would be a stretch - new coach and new squad and all that.

Pass mark for me would be

1. Going deep into the FFA Cup. Say semi-finals or quarters
2. Top 4 in the league (at least top 6)
3. Semi finals at least

In a salary capped league any side that doesn’t set out to win it is basically squatting on a licence.

So id like to think Roar can win it but realistically with a new coaching team and 2/3rds of a squad that is new that’s unlikely.

Losing to SFC would not be a disaster unless they get thrashed, but if I were RF this is the trophy I’d go balls out to win as there’s as much luck to win it as anything else

then there’s the fair play award - be competing for that tin pit trophy. Only to rid ourselves of the BS we got under Aloisi and all the suspensions.

I dont think “making finals” is a measure either. Top 4 at least and looking good to compete the following season and yes, ideally too 3 (although I’d prefer to miss ACL the following season)

A big measure for me is the success or failure of the visa signings, Fowler has a clear strategy here and it goes right to the heart of his judgement - at least 4/5 judged a success early in the season as a minimum.

Finally, success in how they play football. Good style, effective, hard but fair, and always competitive.

A lot of peoples' expectations are total understandable and achievable.  The overriding thing though is that the team plays attractive football and for silverware.  Under JA we looked very brittle, scared and dirty.  If RF can eliminate those aspects and re-introduce a fast entertaining "ball at the feet" Roar style, the results will come and I think most of us will be happy.

That was the thing under the Ange rule, we played fairly and won. It would leave a sour taste in my mouth if we won the Grand Final like SFC did last year. I want my team to play to win, but there are limits. Having said that, Ange played a pro-active game and that helps keep the players on the front foot and reduces the number and extremity of the fouls committed.

My d'ruthers:

1. play pro-actively (I guess that's an up tempo style)
2. Hard but fair
3. Pass mark is top 3 - it seems that RF and his imports should be hungry for success, which is a good starting point (JA had a big dose of Hopium without much conviction)
4. Hit the ground running, ie. be competitive in the FFA Cup game against SFC - a win would be a bonus
5. be somewhere I'd take my kids and/or friends to a game - hasn't been the case for the last couple of years.
