our 3 biggest contributors - starc warner and finch - have all struggled to do anything so far this game.

Bad day for them to have a day off

It is.

what happened in our first 10? Was the ball seeming and swinging everywhere or did we just start poorly?

0-13 off Lyon's first over, but he nearly got wickets with 2 balls.

Some loose balls from Starc and Dorff, but not that many.

Roy has batted well.

The pitch was doing a bit with swing and seam.

Archer and Woakes bowled well too.

Handscomb ( why was he selected?) was hopeless playing down the wrong line, as did Finch (a failed Test opener).

Warner lost concentration, edging it to slips.

Congratulations England.

The better team won on the day.

Australia might have been effective over the early rounds, but faded when it counted.

Pathetic effort by the Wattyls when the chips were down. Was it complacency again? We were always going to struggle once our two flat track sluggers went cheaply. Even the freakish Steve Smith came up short. Ran out of partners. Starc failed when we needed him at his best. The biggest positive is the emergence of Alex Carey.. Ponting and Michael Vaughan want him to play in the Ashes.

Cummins low yield of only 14 wickets for the series has been a surprise after coming into the WC in career best form. I liked Behrendorff's productivity. CA missed a trick imho not picking the wicket taking Adam Zampa instead of a defensive bowler like Lyon. Isnt the priority in ODI cricket to reduce the run rate by taking wickets.

There was plenty of life and movement from the deck in the early stages and the Pom bowlers took advantage.  Finch won the toss and shoulda bowled imho.  I cant help thinking that we need to start to get serious in limited overs cricket by picking specialist bowlers.. like the Poms do. No Anderson ..no Broad.

Congratulations England.

The better team won on the day.

Australia might have been effective over the early rounds, but faded when it counted.

Gday DC,
jaszyjim - went to bed early without much expectations, just watched the rest
of the match on video. Took my little Aussie Terrier Scruf for a walk and
asked him what he thought of the team selection.
He just looked at me & laughed - he is very astute when it comes to cricket.
The selectors could learn from him.

So all those who keep quoting stats this is a wake up call.
Stats are fine, but being accumulated in the early matches means little.
You need to look at what is actually happening, which is why I have forecast doom gloom & disaster.

Firstly the selectors just got it wrong with probably 1/2 the squad, and bringing in Handscomb
with his behind the crease play was never going to work against a top attack. I posted this as soon
as I found out he was in the team.

The teams in the final are there because their top 3 bowlers were superb & their top order batsmen performed.
India & Australia are out because of the reverse of the above - except for Smith.

From the top -
Finch - out as I predicted not moving his feet & the English bowlers have worked it out - should never play
in any international matches of any sort again.
Warner - out to a good ball but hung his bat out on a angle - disappointing but will play in all formats of
international cricket.
Smith - can't believe it was mentioned to drop him - he has struggled but is one of the few players you
stick with, because you know he will come good & he did.
Handscomb - what a joke, it would be interesting to hear the rationale behind the decision to select him ahead
of Wade or M. Marsh. He should never play international again in any format.
Carey - one of the few decisions the selectors finally got right moving him to 5, but should have happened
long ago. A plucky and well deserved 46. Will be interesting to see what happens to him now?
Stoinis - generally felt by most that he shouldn't be in the team & he proved it.
If this is the best he's got, not to be played internationally again.
Maxwell - Probably his highest score but he is just a slogger with little foot movement. Batted at a time we needed
time at the crease, interesting he wasn't bowled. I've constantly criticised him and he is another that should never play
international cricket in any format again.
Starc - a great knock, similar batsman to Maxwell & with a bit of luck can score.
The rest of the bowlers batted like bowlers, including Cummins.

Bowling wise we just weren't there. We were there about's but in a semi not good enough.
NZ & England showed how to bowl at this end of the tournament & they both thoroughly
deserve to be in the final.

Overall an expected result but still disappointing.
Despite some thinking I am negative, I just want to see Australia win & if I cannot see that happening
with the team selected, I will put it out there.
There really needs to be an inquisition into the selectors as they just continually get it wrong.
I think that the most disappointing aspect of this whole cup, is the initial selection of the
squad which had so many question marks over it & in the end proved lacking.

That's all folks - jaszyjim

Spot on jaszyjim. They got it correct with Behendorff. Never gave our two best death bowlers Kane Richardson and Andrew Tye anywhere near  the game time they should have got. With Cummins  down on the form he came into the WC with.. one of these two should have played tonite. Also leaving out a wicket taker and a player the Poms do not handle all that well in Adam Zampa was a major mistake.

I think it was a lack of talent that was the issue - not selectors, Baggers.

Cummins was also forced to become first change to fit Dorf in.

Also, Smith and Warner are not the players they were.

Carey was also a poor keeper, albeit being an excellent batter.

I should also say how well England played last night.

Roy’s batting was outstanding.

Their bowling was good too.

Rashid was a potent wrist spinner, something  the Poms  have rarely had.
