Due to the joint format of the World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, both Qatar (as the host nation of the 2022 World Cup) and China (as the host nation of the 2023 Asian Cup) will also enter the second round of Asian Cup qualifiers.[3]The following restrictions will be applied:
  • Timor-Leste was barred from participating in the Asian Cup qualification after being found to have fielded a total of 12 ineligible players in 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualificationmatches among other competitions.[4]However, as FIFA did not bar them from the World Cup qualifiers, Timor-Leste was allowed to enter the competition, but was ineligible to qualify for the Asian Cup.[5]
  • As Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria indicated they would not travel to Palestine, they may not be drawn into a group along with Palestine.

Surely Yemen and Syria will play elsewhere. Would like to avoid Iraq as they'll be playing in Basra I believe.

This plus Vietnam. All fun places too.
Curious if anyone knows about the following that is mentioned on wiki.. "As Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Syria indicated they would not travel to Palestine, they may not be drawn into a group along with Palestine." ???
Strange if true given Macau weren't afforded the same right in regards to playing in Sri Lanka, but would be consistent with the preferences afforded by AFC given who runs it.
I was hoping Palestine would overtake Jordan in the rankings which would have seen them in the same pot as the others except for Saudi Arabia, and then see if SA backflipped given that Palestine would then be the lowest ranked side in pot 2 rather than the highest ranked side in pot 3.

My preference is Lebanon, Palestine, Maldives and Guam.

Interesting to see Macau forfeited because they were scared of travelling to Sri Lanka. Probably for the best because they could've drawn George Bush's Axis of Evil....Iran/Iraq/N Korea.

this is more likely, but Guam is actually ok for a trip if avoiding typhoons.
think it was the last wc draw that saw similar for Au while the guy sorted through the balls and said something along the lines of "make sure i get the right one" (likely cold ball) to see qatar, china & maldives in the same group. would have been some good business and pleasure as a result of that one ;)

Question, how would teams actually get to Palestine? I know the RAAF and AIF used Gaza airport but that was in the 40s.

It appears Palestine has no airports. I take it they'd have to go to Israel and cross the border? Surely Egypt has a road?

cos Macau is heavily Christian due to the Portuguese. Sri Lanka had muslim terrorist attacks over easter.

Most likely play in UAE anyway, but West Bank is accessible through Israel. Gaza wouldn't likely be used as a venue anyway. Don't think there is even a league in Gaza, but there is the West Bank league.

They played two home games (against UAE and East Timor) in the West Bank last time, but played the other two (against Saudi and Malaysia) in Jordan:

"The fixtures between Saudi Arabia and Palestine were switched after Saudi Arabia cited "exceptional conditions" for their inability to travel to the West Bank.[11] The return fixture, originally to be played on 13 October 2015 at the Faisal Al-Husseini International Stadium, Al-Ram, was later postponed by Saudi Arabia's refusal to pass through Israeli-controlled borders,[12] until the process of agreeing on the venue was concluded.[13] The match was rescheduled to be played on 5 November 2015 in Palestine, after the Palestinian Football Association gave full security guarantees for the match.[14] The match was later further delayed until 9 November, and to be changed to a neutral venue in Asia, as the Palestinian government confirmed that it could no longer guarantee the safety and security for the match.[15] The neutral venue was announced to be Amman International Stadium in Amman, Jordan."

Can't see why Palestine couldn't have dug their heels in and got the three points in a forfeit, but that might be naive of me considering the AFC's attitude towards Israel.

Thanks man. Lebanon, Syria & SA can also access Palestine by bus avoiding going through Israel.
Thought it unusual being reported that they would not go to Palestine given both that Palestine may well play in Qatar or UAE and that the article was more about Palestinian players traveling to those countries on Israeli passports.
All in all just a convenient political excuse to avoid a higher ranked side really.

Thanks for that. See what they come up with in the draw starting now..... AFC always been sus though. Australia & NZ failed in their bid to enter long ago at same time as Taiwan and Israel were expelled, while North Korea were let in - this was when China used their influence and aligned with the arab & muslim block that has always held power.

Regional politics. Saudis and those who they back hate the Palestinians and the Iranians and those who they back support them and fund all their ‘activities’. Strange though that Syria and Lebanon are included as they are Iranian backed.
