+xDidn't we beat Sydney in one of the behind closed doors pre-season games under JA? I remember getting my hopes up after that. Given the amount of experimentation etc in pre-season games, even results against A-League opposition won't mean much. The FFA cup game will be the first reliable indicator of how we compare. Last preseason is hidden behind this dark black cloud called John, if I remember rightly someone said we didn’t beat A League opponents in preseason last year?

Below are the results from the last couple of preseasons. It obviously doesn't tell us what the style of play was (which we all know was abysmal), but JA's results weren't as bad as the season that followed.
2017-18 Lions 0-2 Roar Pen Power 2-4 Roar Roar 0-4 WSW Roar 2-1 China U23 Vict 3-1 Roar Olympic 0-3 Roar Syd FC 0-2 Roar
2018-19 Logan 0-4 Roar Magpies 0-5 Roar Nix 1-2 Roar Roar 1-1 Syd FC Vict 1-1 Roar Melb City 1-1 Roar Roar 3-0 BPL Select Roar 1-1 Aus U20

Roar already have 8 games booked in so they’re going to blow that this preseason (I think Ange did 11 preseason games the year after his rebuild which I’d say is the absolute minimum if this side is to gel before the season starts).

From memory it’s Redlands, B/City, Gladstone, Sydney (Cup), WSW, Glory, Jets and Sydney again. That’s 8. I heard on Saturday that away games to Lions and Western United are close to being finalised, so that’s 10

+x+xWhen you think how horrible pre seasons were under Aloisi, this is an encouraging start. I recall Aloisi saying pre season doesn't count but it sure as hell does. Our best and worst seasons have always been reflected in pre season performances. That was why I was sure we were screwed last season before the season proper even kicked off. Most encouraging all for me are the accounts of the quick passing game that the team appears to be playing. The Sydney game will be an interesting test. All in all this season is shaping up to the most interesting all round for a long time. Agree with most of what you posted, but in defense of JA, the pre-season results under him were similar (even though the style of play may have been crud). We cannot extrapolate anything of JA pre-season then season results without taking into account injuries from the start. JA had quite a good 18/19 pre-season, then from what we have heard from a number of sources over time, the injuries to so many key players made his game plan and style of play impossible to implement. I still hold that had JA been able to maintain his fully fit choice of team we may have had an incredibly good season. The fact that his methods were unworkable in a fill in squad and he could not let go of his master plan to at least play decent simple football is what he should have been nailed to the shed for. If he had accepted the team could not play his way, he then had more than half a season as pre-season training to change to a more traditional form of play and by the finals we might have been contesting as a team rather than just turning up. Water under the bridge, but I do not believe comparing last season's pre-season form is in any way relevant to either our continuous slide throughout last season or our pre-season and season form this year. To borrow just a little from our monarchical head, JA has his anus horribillus and it totally rectum.
When I wear their colours, I am the club.

To borrow just a little from our monarchical head, JA has his anus horribillus and it totally rectum. Obviously my recollection was coloured by subsequence experience. I did call the upcoming season a fail but I guess that was based on having reached the firm conclusion by that point that Aloisi wasn't a coach. Nice guy, great media pundit and a tv natural, but not a coach. Not that that makes me any kind of genius. We had already seen him at Heart, ffs. Its not like you couldn't see the train wreck coming.

The preseason results under JA very much pointed to the terrible results that followed. We knew last preseason, our team was riddled with injuries and the team couldn't beat HAL teams and couldn't keep clean sheets. The only win was early on against WP ,who didnt even have a full team. The season before we knew the team was full of pensioners that couldn't run and preseason showed we were a hopeless rabble that couldnt defend. It didnt take a sixth sense for most of us to feel major trepidation for the last two years. So far i am a long way short of that...But time will tell if things turn pear shaped.

Preseason is a complex beast and not as easy to interpret as we’d like. The saying goes that we’ve always had a good preseason before a good season; I’ve no idea if that’s true tbh but I recon most fans believe it.
Aloisi though used used to describe the FFA Cup as a “hit out” and we never seemed to be ready, and he talked about his players not being match fit until Round 8 which always seemed a waste of preseason. We did seem to waste preseason under JA.
The last convincing preseason i remember waa mulveys title year, but I can’t remember the results, we just seemed to have things “together” and looked confident and self-assured in ourselves.
I have a good feeling about this season, which I often do through blind loyalty but I didn’t after the Logan Lightening game last preseason, Aloisi always seemed to talk about results not mattering and “we’ll get better” ... which is fine, but that became the early season mantra as well - even last November he was saying “we’ll come good”.
Anyway, we’re on our way - he’s got 19/23 players locked in and can start working with them now

Just saw O'Roar report a crowd of 2122 for the friendly on their twitter feed. Better than most Nix and CCM crowds during the regular season. :w00t:

Shannon Brady played last season and he was 22.

I'm waiting for the one that they're going to hold at the Irish Club. PaulC may even make an appearance.

But paulc wouldn’t attend an Irish pub .... he’d be too worried the quality of the beer. He’s surely a Heineken man, or probably Stella because it’s “reassuringly expensive” 🤪
