I will copy below in part an article in the OZ, it says Optus have 700K Football fans ... thats like huge and if this could ever be reproduced on a FTA station for Hal...

Very interesting Optus saying their sport (soccer) service now has 700,000 active subscribers. Not sure how that translates on a live game viewing basis - and if it means EPL at $65m a year is good value - but seems a significant number.

700k is a huge number

Depends what they define as an ‘active’ subscriber.

There’s probably several thousands of people who have free access to Optus sport as part of their mobile/internet plan though never use the service.

Optus have 700k active subscribers. 

I have 700,000,000 inactive dollars in my bank account!!!

Optus has 10 million mobile subscribers and about 1.5million broadband subscribers so the 700,000 doesn’t relate to those numbers so to suggest it is part of their plan is a bit of a stretch. 

The key key word is “active” - that doesn’t sound like anything other than 700,000 people who are watching Optus Sport.

Potentially yes. The survey done a few years ago said there were about 1.8 million people watching some form of EPL each week so 700k is believable. 

My guess would be individual live matches might only pull 50-100k  Per game. But I bet the mini matches and highlight packages are pulling very big numbers in comparison.

I think the mini matches are a fantastic idea.  Perfect solution when you want to watch a game already played and don't want to commit two hours or so to something that has already happened.  Plus a perfect way to keep watching several teams when you don't have the time to devote hours to football every week, which is me.

Agree. Absolutely love the mini matches. I’m not a follower of the EPL but i’ll pull those up on the Apple TV occasionally, especially in the next couple of months while preseason goes on and after junior football finished ... meanwhile FoxSports just gives the entire game on replay which I’ve no interest in.

WC viewing:

Socceroos v France was 2.132m,

Socceroos v Denmark was 2.064m.

both games enjoyed peak audiences of over 3 million.

you post so much trash. i didn't even know there was an international Rugby match on. 600k seems like a low figure for what is a premium event for that sport.

Those rugby figures are way off where they used to be.
In 2011 Rugby had 1.5 mill viewers for a tri nations decider.

The silver lining for football's recent troubles is that the demographics are in our favour, Australia is becoming more diverse with people from football backgrounds so that can only mean that over time the code will get more popular. 

Union is dead, it's seen as an elite Anglo-centric sport played in private schools with no appeal to the rest sections of the community. They'll be finished in a generation. 

I don't want to wish ill on any other sport, but we've definitely caught up to and overtaken basketball and rugby union, and we now have the NRL in our sights.

In addition, the NBL recently had to give their TV rights away for free to SBS/ESPN, whilst football is still receiving a fee for our game (albeit a small one compared to the other codes).

That said, I do feel as though basketball is on an upward trend, but it's starting from a long way behind.

I'm not sure if the NBL is on an upward trend. i think the extra media they've getting because of Bogut might be clouding people's judgement. I'm mean their TV rights deal is dropped down a level. however, they are finally expanding this season. still only 9 teams though. 

A good barometer is the pecking order in which the media prioritize each sports when announcing the news, talk backs and general interest topics.

NBL is behind the HAL however union still is above despite the talk that union is Australia's 4th code (discussed in despair in my opinion).

They are on Kayo now.

NBL gave there FTA rights away for nothing other then advertisement money but however Fox Sports still play them $50m a year. HAL will be behind both NBL and Rugby next year. That  NBL advertisement money would easily be over $10m a year. 

It would be amazing if Fox Sports paid NBL $50m/year, it would probably be the best tv deal ever in fact ..... seeing as Fox Sports don’t show NBL any more
