+x+x+xI’m amazed the news still rates above 1m... What? People still watch the news on TV? There are still people that get their weather from the newspaper. Gosh! But back to the news on Australian TV. It isn't really news now is it?

+x+x+xTen saw its lowest daily share since January 2014, with 5.6% for the channel and 8.9% at a network level. not sure of the relevance... unless you're saying they need more live sport? They need more low rating content ;) Yep, the A-League won’t help them. The CBS buy out was meant to turn their fortunes around, but it’s becoming harder to see how Ten will even be around in 5-10 years. The way media is being consumed keeps evolving, but traditional broadcasters continue to have their challenges adapting.

When you add the 9% from the loonie lefty Greens who are immensely happy with the ABC’s biased commentary and reporting, it makes sense.
In a resort somewhere

With just seven weeks to go until the new A-League season, there is still no confirmation on whether any games will be shown on free-to-air television.

There it is ”Confusion over A-League TV deal with Channel Ten as Fox Sports waits for talks The main rights holder, Fox Sports, is yet to be involved in any talks about divesting some of its rights, The Daily Telegraph understands, a crucial factor in whether there will be games on free-to-air (FTA) in the new campaign. A-Leagues bosses have been in talks with the Ten Network for months about broadcasting two games each round exclusively on its main Ten channel in a bid to reignite public interest in the competition. Stream live coverage of every round of the 2019 Major League Soccer with ESPN and beIN SPORTS on KAYO. Get your 14 day free trial & start streaming instantly > Sydney FC’s Alex Brosque (left) and Perth Glory’s Diego Castro in last season’s A-League grand final. Picture: Getty Images But the merger of Ten’s US parent, CBS, with entertainment giant Viacom has held up approval of that proposed deal, with the clock ticking towards the start of the new season. A greater impediment though is likely to be the exclusive rights Fox holds to show all five games, one of which can be simulcast on free-to-air TV under the terms of the current broadcast agreement. Though the pay-TV broadcaster has spoken of divesting itself of “non-marquee” content, The Daily Telegraph understands that its executives have not been approached to discuss their willingness to sell the exclusive rights to two games each round. Fox Sports, owned by News Corp, the publisher of this newspaper, is believed to be planning for the new season on the basis it will show all five games live, as in every season previously. Club owners have effectively been running the league since the start of August, and have held talks with Fox about their overall strategy to rejuvenate a competition whose crowds and TV ratings have fallen for several seasons. The countdown is on until the start of the new A-League season. Picture: Getty Images But so far it’s understood there have been no direct talks with the network about reshaping the broadcast contract to include a far greater FTA component. Club owners are likely to seek multi-party talks in coming days with executives from Foxtel, Fox Sports and Ten to see if there is potential for a deal to be struck, in which Ten would show the early evening games on Saturdays and Sundays. The heavily delayed draw for the coming season has been designed to allow for that, with several “marquee” fixtures scheduled in those timeslots. But with just weeks to go until the start of the new season, the opportunity to market those games is narrowing. For the past two years Fox Sports effectively bought a slot on Ten’s subsidiary channels and broadcast its own coverage of the Saturday night A-League fixture. But without any incentive for Ten to market the games the ratings were poor, accentuating a trend seen when SBS previously had the FTA rights. A-League bosses are likely to argue to Ten that having two games on the main Ten channel will attract viewers who might then be tempted to subscribe to Fox and to its new streaming service, Kayo.” https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/sport/confusion-over-aleague-tv-deal-with-channel-ten-as-fox-sports-waits-for-talks/news-story/0eeac3b35107d3db46371e4bf306064d

Hand on heart not the other thing, a beyond true line in that article was """ For the past two years Fox Sports effectively bought a slot on Ten’s subsidiary channels and broadcast its own coverage of the Saturday night A-League fixture. But without any incentive for Ten to market the games the ratings were poor, accentuating a trend seen when SBS previously had the FTA rights 10 especially as they where in some kinda war with News over CBS getting 10 instead of them, and SBS still struggling to come to terms with they were the main Football channel . Football has never had that FTA network, that just does cross promotional work, appoint [this bid does not apply to SBS] in their sports departments senior Football people.. The hope was when FFA signed with 10, was that 10 would run things on the Project, News shows, there morning show, and other shows similar to how 7 & 9 do in the NRL & AFL... it never happened. Beyond that, Football went into a civil war and the negativity from within the Football community had to hurt... so for the last few years we have had a sulking SBS, 10 at war with CBS over 10, with both CBS & News pissed off over the A-League broadcast, throw in Football main stream media and social media in constant negative territory. Into all this the EPL went to Optus at a much cheaper price than staying with Fox and the A-League. I like the idea that Indy Hal will get all major existing and potential broadcasters in a room together and hammer out a deal I hope.... deep down in my soul I think 10 see's it needs a sport and of those left we are best... If we can convince 10 & Fox & others we will unite and be positive and do some of our own promotion then I think a deal can be made .

Confusion over A-League TV deal with Channel Ten as Fox Sports waits for talks
AUGUST 29, 2019 Hopes of introducing primetime free-to-air TV coverage of the A-League remain mired in uncertainty just seven weeks from the start of the new season.
The main rights holder, Fox Sports, is yet to be involved in any talks about divesting some of its rights, The Daily Telegraph understands, a crucial factor in whether there will be games on free-to-air (FTA) in the new campaign.
A-Leagues bosses have been in talks with the Ten Network for months about broadcasting two games each round exclusively on its main Ten channel in a bid to reignite public interest in the competition.

Ten will most likely get them for free again. Or they could pay the same as Sky Sports $100k a year for it.

+x[quote]A-League bosses are likely to argue to Ten that having two games on the main Ten channel will attract viewers who might then be tempted to subscribe to Fox and to its new streaming service, Kayo. This is a very weak argument. The more FTA games on TV the less is the incentive to pay for STV.

You gotta love these comments. 😃

Both leagues also get considerable contra out of the rights deal, so some of what may look like the networks promoting the leagues, may be the leagues using that contra to promote themselves. 10, having paid nothing, faces the prospect that if they spend to much money on promotion, and it doesn't cause a big uptick in viewing, that they will have turned a free product into a loss maker. So perversely, the incentive is to spend as little as possible. For 10, would the amount of money required to double viewing, pay for itself? Could a network double viewing just through cross promotion? Would anything less than a doubling be worth the money spent to achieve it?

The problem is that even by doubling last years rating they would still be crap and 10 could get similar or better rating for less $ with other shows (like Peppa pig). Make no mistake, 10 is looking for bargain basement content so the big risk is that there may be no fta coverage this season

A-league lost a lot of viewers with the EPL split to Optus. Moving to 10 with ‘adequate’ marketing may help to counter this. As long as casuals know where something is showing and ‘legitimised’ by advertising it will garner increased interest. Also, I imagine the A-league bosses want their leadership to look successful so would be willing to throw everything at the game.
