Adelaide pursue Ghanaian striker

19 May 2009 | 18:48 - SBS

Adelaide United have welcomed potential signing Lloyd Owusu to Adelaide after the striker touched down in the city of churches.

Owusu is in Adelaide to look at the club and the city after the Reds' expression of interest to add the 32-year-old English-born former Ghana international to their squad.

Owusu watched the Reds' training session at Thebarton Oval before checking out some of the city's sites and contemplating the possibility of relocating from England to Adelaide to play in the A-League.

"It's lovely to be fair," Owusu said. "I've always wanted to come to Australia and see this beautiful country and Adelaide is nice."

With a proven goalscoring record, Owusu, who has spent the past couple of months on loan at English club Brighton & Hove Albion, is reported to have a number of other offers on the table in England as well as the one

from Adelaide, but he says he is attracted to the Australian club because it has shown a genuine interest in obtaining his services.

"They (Adelaide United) want me, that's the main thing. It's good to feel wanted as a player. I mean if someone puts their arm around you as a player you know you've got to produce your best performances," Owusu said.

"I don't want to be going to a team where, don't get me wrong the money could be good, but I could be the fourth or fifth choice striker. I'm not really looking for that at the moment. I'm at a point in my career where I believe I know I can keep going, keep kicking on and my goal scoring record shows that.

"Brighton have offered me a one-year deal with a further year option but ideally I'm looking for a two- year deal if possible. But, like I said, I am going to weigh up all my options and see what's right for me at the end of the day."

Owusu is unlikely to train with United's squad during his visit but he admitted to being impressed by the standard of the session and said it was good to catch up with Paul Reid, who he knows from Reid's time playing with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Owusu heads back to England on Sunday.

Looks like there'll be a friendly against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh on June 26. I might as well head there to catch the game. The state league games don't really appeal to me for some reason... :( Someone please motivate my grassroots support! :p

OMG was on the Advertiser website and Val has written an article mentioning the AUFC kits and has basically described them exactly has they appear on that blog! Great piece of 'journalism', on another note it appears we can be resigned to losing Malik to NQF, big mistake from AUFC if that is true.

not really General

we need a attacking mid and strikers - he is neither. Hes going to be good for whoever gets him but you dont sign players just because...you sign the types of player you need!

Id rather have someone like Monterosso on our books TBH

Question without notice - where does Alamao fit in our our plans? Would he slot in the midfielder?

Alamao is definately a good option to play as a midfielder, but I reckon he is going to be bench warming a reasonable amount this season - shame as I rate him highly.

Malik is a striker though, he can also play as an attacking mid - which positions did he play for the NYL?

now your testing my memory - its been a long time since the year started  I never thought of him as a striker and besides I think he would be 5th or so in line midfield wise

Im saying that we cant fit everyone and if he doesnt fit into our plans well there is no point stoping him from being by a club where he does fit

100% with that sentiment, if AUFC can't see him as part of their plans then he needs to be able to play - NQF will probably start him since most of their squad are fill players...

Black look for Reds
VAL MIGLIACCIO
May 22, 2009 12:30am

ADELAIDE United will undergo another revolutionary makeover when the Reds officially launch its "All Blacks" alternate A-League strip.

While the franchise is under Football Federation Australia scrutiny until new stakeholders are found, United's kit is set to keep the FFA's bean-counters content.

The forecast boom sales of the radical black kit are bound to head partly into the FFA's coffers under manufacturer Reebok's licensing agreement.

It will be the first time since the inaugural A-League season kick-off in 2005 that United has dared to move away from playing in predominantly all-white away strips on foreign turf.

The black away kit is set to feature splashes of red across the jersey, shorts and socks.

United's home strip will feature its traditional blood red with gold piping and splashes of blue across the strip to complete the tricolours of the state.

But United's 2008 FIFA Club World Cup cameo performer Osama Malik won't be donning the new-look United kits. Malik is destined to sign for North Queensland Fury after the club extended the teenager's stay in Townsville.

Malik was due back in Adelaide today but Fury coach Ian Ferguson wants to hold the midfielder until June 2.

Malik, 18, will head to Singapore to play a friendly match for Fury against the S-League's Tampines Rovers on May 31. United trained at Rovers' stadium last year on its way to meet Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor in Tashkent in the return leg of the Asian Champions League semi-final.

Malik said he hadn't had any contact from United's officials since he made his way to Townsville last week.

But the Fury experience had been unbelievable, he said.

"Ian Ferguson, I like his style of coaching," Malik said.

"They're a great club and they're really looking after me.

"I was waiting, waiting for United but it doesn't look like it's going to happen."

Ferguson has been using Malik as a creative attacking midfielder after United positioned the gifted creator on the left flank in his two Club World Cup appearances and for most of the National Youth League season.

Malik is set to become Fury's third South Australian-born player on its roster.

Former United midfielder Jason Spagnuolo was one of Fury's first signatures last year before ex-Adelaide City midfielder Fred Agius joined the club this year.

Ex-United and Fury football director Michael Petrillo and new goalkeeping coach Daniel Beltrame complete the SA contingent in Townsville.

Quoting myself from back in March, and Big Unit even earlier:

I havent seen anything yet on this site re the new players we are looking at for next season.

As reported in todays Advertiser, we are talking to the following:

1. Yukata Tahara -Kyoto Sanga J League stiker - 26 YO. 32 goals in 144 matches.

2. Datsakorn Thonglao - Thai national captain - 25 YO. Playing in Vietnamese league. Had a loan spell for Kaiserslautern.

3. Adam Hughes - 26 YO. Played in Uefa champions league with Irelands Drogheda United.

4. Scott Balderson -18 YO. Currenlty playing in England for Stevenage Borough.

5. Players from Italy - Petrillo "our network is getting much bigger"

Wow - some of these guys sound iteresting.

What do you other Red supporters think?

Gotta start looking over these names again. So far, only Tahara has been mentioned more than once. :p

Some of the home-grown Youth League talent which has been thrown around the park are:

1. Francesco Monterosso - leading scorer in the Youth League, not yet contracted to the senior team. May be scouted to a European team?

2. Osama Malik - quick, agile, looking like a certain signing for the senior team for next season.

3. Michael De Bono - skills still raw, may still need some development before being promoted to the senior side.

Okay, so as of May 23, 2009, our potential signings/names-that-have-been-thrown-about are:

- The only confirmation we have had from the list above is Adam Hughes being picked up by the Reds. His signing as well as Michael Marrone's promotion from the Baby Reds came earlier in the year.

- We also know that Yutaka Tahara was not offered a contract and was picked up by J.League 2nd tier club, Shonan Bellmare.

- We still have yet heard nothing more regarding the Thai international, Datsakorn Thonglao. Although some trolls on his Wikipedia article have suggested he is 'close to signing for Adelaide United' as of the revision on February 6 this year.

- Scott Balderson is apparently no longer on the playing roster for Stevenage Borough FC in England's Conference National. No idea if we've even had a second look at this Aussie youngster, but he was called up for our Under-20 national squad back in September last year.

- Our Youth League boys haven't been offered any senior contracts as of yet. But by the sound of things, once our salary cap is reached, Vidmar and Valkanis intend to push some of the Baby Reds into the first team whilst maintaining a tight-knit playing group. This should give players like Francesco Monterosso and Michael De Bono a go at hitting the first team if proven worthy.

- Osama Malik seems to be on his way over to Townsville, as his trial with the Fury has been extended until June 2. He will also be travelling with them to Singapore as they take on a local side over there. It's a shame that he probably won't be with us next season, but let's wish him all the best with the Fury who will probably give him more game time than we will be able to.

- All the hype currently surrounds the former Ghana international, and proven goal scorer, Lloyd Owusu. As I type this, he is still in Adelaide somewhere, possibly being pampered by the AUFC football staff, and is due to fly back to England tomorrow before making up his decision. He has mentioned that he is not lured by the money, but more towards a starting striker position which he knows he will do his best to uphold.

- Carl Veart's journey into Swine Flu territory apparently bore fruit, as there are now reports of talks with some Chilean and/or Argentinean players. Veart payed close attention to a match between Union Espanola and third placed Curico Unido and was impressed by what he saw there.

- Today's article in the Sydney Morning Herald mentions Italian defender, Andrea Merenda and Ivorian Coast duo, Vamarra Diarra and Ousmane Toure, as being on Vidmar's radar as he's been in Sydney for his managerial training.

Guys my local club Sunshine Georgies in the Vic vpl have Evan on board from Football Superstars and he has been doing well in the reserves, but he will be coming to you guys for a trial soon. This from the FFV site.I know our manager and Stubbins are best of mates.

.Sunshine Georgies Coach Andy O’Dell – “Yes we are the underdogs, individually and collectively, Green Gully are the stronger side, they have a great team but we have been playing well of recent. This is our biggest game of the season because if we win we will make life very difficult for many other teams, and may even present us with a crack at finals football, which is outstanding for a club like us with a small budget, but a great work ethic. Against Gully, like most teams, we will use the state of our pitch to our advantage to stop them playing and I hope that against Gully we can achieve a result from this. I can confirm that once we have secured safety from relegation mathematically, we will definitely play the seventeen year old boy Evan Christodoulou who featured on football superstar last year, to give him a taste of top flight football in preparation for his trial at season end with A-league club Adelaide United.”

Marconi will not be too pleased.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Yeah, was going to say, on Wiki it says they're all Marconi players! Hardly all that difficult to 'scout' them, but he was in Sydney primarily for other matters, anyway.

Adelaide United's import strike force

Article from: The Advertiser
May 25, 2009 12:30am

ADELAIDE United is on the verge of unveiling Uruguayan striker Alvaro Pintos as its latest import.

Pintos's FIFA agent Kenny Kamale Mattar, director of Middle East Sports Management, revealed to The Advertiser the Uruguayan had been secured. Adelaide officials, however, said the deal still was pending.

Pintos would join Brazilians Cassio, Cristiano and Alemao while Ghana international Lloyd Owusu is due to complete the club's five-man import quota by signing this week.

Football director Mike Valkanis said the Reds had tracked Pintos for some time. "He's been on the radar and on the shortlist but nothing has been signed, sealed or delivered," he said.

"We've done our homework on him and we know a lot about him. He's one of those technically-gifted strikers who's got an eye for goal. He could potentially be a good deal for us."

Pintos, 31, completed a one-season contract with Rah-Ahan in the Iranian Premier League in April.

He was a Uruguayan under-20 international before scoring regularly for Montevideo's Penarol and Cerro, and for Bolivia's Real Potosi. He scored four goals in six international club matches last year.

Owusu will extend his stay in Adelaide for another week after arriving from London on Tuesday, Valkanis said. Owusu is understood to be keen to sign a two-year deal after spending the past six days in Adelaide meeting and greeting future colleagues.

He was impressed by United but the Reds could face a contract tug-of-war with Brighton and Hove Albion, and Oldham Athletic in England.

"Things are looking quite good with Lloyd," Valkanis said.

"He'll get to know the boys a little bit better by training with us for another week and that's a good thing."

Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar returns to lead his squad this week after completing his Asian Football Confederation B coach's licence in Sydney.

Vidmar was absent for three weeks with the A-League coach of the year targeting potential imports playing for Sydney's Marconi Stallions, Valkanis said.

Vidmar cast his eyes on Marconi's Italian defender Andrea Merenda and Ivory Coast-born pair Vamarra Diarra and Ousmane Toure.

United last year signed the New South Wales Premier League's golden boot winner Robert Younis from Apia Leichardt before the young striker was released back to the club this year midway through a two-year deal.

This is looking promising for our forward line, all of a sudden. Things to take out of this article:

- it apparently wasn't written by Val Migliaccio (I haven't seen the hard copy article though)

- Alvaro Pintos, has been confirmed as a signing by his agency, but not by AUFC.

- Lloyd Owusu has yet to leave Australia, and has extended his stay here in Adelaide for another week. Offers from Oldham Athletic is news to me.

They were linked to him from the begining, it was just that B&HA seemed to be the front runners. Great news that we are looking at a swag of strikers! I hope that Owusu decides to stay, a link to the African populace of Adelaide would be great - I want those drummers every week!

Firstly thanks for the Info guys :) its great to see AU being able to find players whilest under the controll of the FFA

Secondly the fact these guys have score at least an average of one a game is exiting - As much as I love brazil and the footballers from there is great we are looking at other parts of South America too.

the fact that Lloyd has stayed on for another week is promising....wonder if he has the missus out here as well. They have a 6 month old so she would have to be happy with Adelaide (mainly the city but the club as well) as well (being a good place to have a long term future post Lloyd's career, good place to raise kids etc.)

As I understand we arent looking at our Under 23's till the main list is filled - IF AU made up their minds about who hopefully they have been told "look we will sign you up in the under 23 slot but it wont be offical till then'

Great news on all counts. Perth have been really active in the recruitment department but now Adelaide is comming out and also making all the right noises.

Totaly agree with your point on the African drummers UtdGirl. Its that extra pinch of spice that all the other codes wish they could tap in to, so why not use it.

Val also had some actual reporting in the paper yesterday! AUFC had their internal trial which ended 4-3 with both Cristiano and Owusu bagging a brace. It seems that Owusu has really impressed Aurelio and could very well be the stirke partner for Cristiano we have needed, both to help create goals and as a spur to get the best out of Cristiano. Fingers crossed that we sign him up!

Here is the story:

Val Migliaccio wrote:
Owusu proved he could be an ideal strike partner for Cristiano after nailing two goals in Adelaide United's internal trial yesterday at Thebarton.

Owusu held up the ball well, had quick feet and lived up to his "they don't call me Hang Time for nothing" reputation as he rose high to score his second against Socceroos keeper Eugene Galekovic.

Reds coach Aurelio Vidmar must have been impressed by Owusu, who has not yet put pen to paper after landing here last week from London.

Owusu's decision will be based on lifestyle rather than the fiscal benefits of moving to Adelaide after his partner, Sam Nelemans, and baby daughter Ajaya Ama arrived in town on Saturday.

"With the little one, I want to see the whole base, the infrastructure of Adelaide United and making sure she's OK," Owusu said yesterday.

"The club wants me which is a great thing."

Owusu will leave tomorrow for Perth where he will make his decision.

Nelemans will be visiting her father, Kenneth, in Western Australia with Owusu and Ajaya Ama.

The Ghanaian international's "Blue" Reds eventually beat Cristiano's "Orange" Reds 4-3 in an 80-minute clash which also featured Socceroos legend Tony Vidmar and retired United stalwart Carl Veart on opposing sides.

Cristiano equalled Owusu's two-goal feat with two stunning efforts.

Owusu, however, stole the limelight in a competitive hit-out.

The ex-Cheltenham Town striker was a handful for United's Socceroo squad defender Robert Cornthwaite.

United's Kristian Sarkies and Fabian Barbiero both missed the session because of illness while Mark Birighitti and Daniel Mullen were absent on Young Socceroos' duty in the Netherlands.
