-------Cristiano------Owusu--------
Cassio--------Hughes--------Dodd
-----------------Reid-----------------
Jamo---Fyfe---Cornthwaite---Mullen
--------------Galekovic--------------

Bench:
- Monterosso
- Birighitti
- Pantelis
- Alemao

Would be my starting line up. With our young defense I dont think a back three is an option, as much as I do like the idea of Monterosso playing behind the front two.

I think the good thing about Alemao is that he is quite flexible around the ground. An attacking midfield role for him would be interesting to watch.

But yeah, I think I might be overly ambitious with Monterosso behind the front two in a starting line up. Something like tstead's line up is probably more likely.

Barbs is an interesting one. I really dunno where to fit him in anymore. If fit, he could come on as a sub for Dodd. Hard to say really.

Its a shame, he was starting to cement his spot in the team, but if / when the formation changes and includes 2 up front, he is imo the candidate to loose his spot.

Barbs is class but he's the classic 'utility' player who can cover in many areas. A bit like Alamao. Must be painful for them not to have definite roles but they'll contribute this year for sure. Barbs may even get a limited run at the front sometimes.

I'd say the General has the line-up pretty spot on but it'll be Hughes in Alamao's spot I think. The we have Marrone to fit in as well. I'm starting to feel a bit better about our depth.

And the question of Sarkies......?

Forgot all about Sarkies... haha

I really can't see where to fit him in. Depth is definitely starting to show in our lineup, though I still think the greater competition there is to get on the first team, the better off we'll be on the pitch.

Some more AUFC info, we have lost the Argentinian!

Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar sceptical about emulating last season
RICHARD EARLE
June 04, 2009 12:00am
BATTERE in the transfer market and sporting the scars of ownership uncertainty, Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar concedes it will be tough to emulate the Reds' 2008 success.
Vidmar hopes to confirm Brighton and Hove Albion forward Lloyd Owusu will accept a two-year deal to bolster his attacking stocks.
Regardless, United are destined to enter the 2009-2010 AFC Champions League and A-League campaigns without key additions they desired.
...
Vidmar revealed a mystery Argentine marksman, playing in Chile, had been whisked away from United's clutches by a Mexican club last week.
"We are still looking for an attacking-type player. We have had some great contacts with players overseas and one in Chile fell by the wayside last Friday. He went to Mexico for a lot more money," Vidmar lamented.
...

I wonder who the Argentinean was?

And hopefully you guys still have some good plan Bs and Cs in regards to finding that 'attacking-type player,' - which I interpret as an attacking midfielder or second striker alongside Owusu.

BTW After AU's cull, I'm surprised they held onto Alemao, who spent more time on the bench last season. I'm guessing he must be on a not unreasonable wage?

thats what the pre season is for isnt it - to try something that may be overly ambitious? Out of the crop of youngsters that you come across you find a couple of jems that stand out and could prove their worth from day one - hes one of them.

I would like to see Alamao as a attacking midfeilder - he would have the versility to do it!

YAY and DOUBLE YAY! that we got Lloyd - he is going to be a cult hero in Adelaide \:d/

Alright, I think I might head to the Casino to catch tonight's Aust v Qatar game. Where's the best place to catch it there?

Meanwhile, we need to sing this song at the Reds matches:

Rhino Edwards's "Owusu (The One and Only)"

OWUSU (THE ONE AND ONLY)

VS1 HE DID HIS TIME IN THE WILDERNESS BUT NOW HE'S BACK WHERE HE BELONGS IT MADE ME SO HAPPY TO SEE HIM AGAIN I HAD TO WRITE ME A SONG JUST LIKE A FINE WINE OF BORDEAUX BETTER THE OLDER IT GETS WE ALL KNOW THE BEST IS YET TO COME YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHIN YET FROM THE ONE AND ONLY

CHORUS OWUSU OWUSU X2 COMING OUT FIGHTING IN THE RED AND WHITE CORNER THE ONE AND ONLY LLOYD OWUSU

VS2 HE DON'T PLAY THE AIR GUITAR HE DON'T PLAY THE BLUES BUT HE PLAYS HIS GAME LIKE A HURRICANE THERE AIN'T NO TIME TO LOSE JUST WHAT YOU WANT FROM A LEGEND COS HE ALWAYS GIVES ONE HUNDRED PERCENT THEN HE TAKES IT ALL AND ROLLS WITH THE PUNCHES THAT'S DESERVING OF YOUR BIG RESPECT THE ONE AND ONLY

CHORUS x2

SOLO

VS3 WELL I CAN'T WAIT TIL SATURDAY COMES THE NEXT ATTACK OF THE KILLER BEES LEADING THE LINE THE MAN FROM GHANA THE ONE AND ONLYX3

CHORUS

EXTRA CHORUS

OWUSU OWUSUX2 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE BE UPSTANDING FOR THE ONE AND ONLY LLOYD OWUSU

---

We might need to change "red and white corner" to "red and gold corner" though... And we may need to tweak "wait til Saturday comes" to "wait til Friday night comes", and "the killer bees" may need to change to "United Reds"...

On a sadly neglected side of the club I have been catching up on the Lady Reds, I know that the girls could score goals last season but were as leaky as the boys from 07/08. Looks like they are on the right path by shoring up defence. Also I hope this new striker they have signed will do the business at the other end.

That is a great song written by that bloke, did you download the track as well? I tried to fit your suggestions into the song progression. I got rid of the first verse as it doesn't fit with AUFC but the rest is great! I also made it into the lines that fit with the music, find it really hard to go through it when it is just a string of words

btw very impressed that it is a fan song that doesn't have the f-bomb dropping constantly, hate all those lame insult songs.

The song was written by Status Quo's bassist after all. He's a big fan of Owusu, as can be seen here.

The chorus will probably be sung quite a lot at the games - most likely just the "Owusu. Owusu. Coming out fighting in the Red and Gold corner, the one and only Lloyd Owusu." section.

Hey guys it looks like that Chilean bloke is back on the radar, supposedly his contract with the Mexican club fell through!

It also looks like the guy from Dandenong is going to get a contract as well. That will stitch up the attacking mid and central defender!

Ace defender Chris Coyne headlines Socceroos World Cup

VAL MIGLIACCIO
June 19, 2009 12:00am

OPERATION Socceroo is destined to shape Adelaide United's new season, with AFC World Cup qualifying defender Chris Coyne headlining the Reds' wishlist.

Socceroos Jason Culina, Craig Moore and Mile Sterjovki are also part of United's mission to help Socceroos boss Pim Verbeek's World Cup campaign.

United's third AFC Champions League campaign in 2010 has inadvertently become an ally of the South African-bound World Cup-bound Socceroos because of the new A-League home and away season's ending in February - four months before Australia's third World Cup campaign.

Adelaide's 2010 Champions League group stage will start in March and end in May with six home and away matches - perfect timing for keeping World Cup Socceroos in shape.

Adelaide football director Valkanis confirmed the club was interested in luring Coyne to Adelaide. "He's one of the players on the list," he said.

He said Moore had entertained the idea of being part of United's 30-man Champions League roster on loan from Brisbane Roar at the end of the A-League season.

"I spoke to Moorey last week and he actually asked me whether we'd be keen on taking him on to help him out," Valkanis said.

"We would like that - it wouldn't be a problem.

"He's a leader and we'd like to help his chances for the World Cup squad. There would only be some hurdles with the Champions League that we'd have to jump, and that would be registrations.

"The Champions League starts at the same time as the finals."

Moore, Culina (Gold Coast) and Sterjovski's (Perth Glory) seasons end on Valentine's Day next year if their respective clubs don't make the finals. The four-month time gap between the end of the season and the World Cup is a concern for Verbeek.

"That (Sterjovski and Culina) decision would come down to Aurelio (Vidmar)," Valkanis said.

"But it's a win-win situation for the players as well."

Coyne is understood to be a target of Sydney FC and Perth Glory but both clubs will struggle to sign the stopper below the $2.25 million salary cap with their marquee player spots also filled by Sterjovski (Glory) and John Aloisi (Sydney FC).

United seemingly has enough room in the cap after a deal with Argentine playmaker Marcos Flores collapsed yesterday.

"He decided to remain in South America," Valkanis said. "He's obviously thinking that good players from Argentina play in Argentina or Mexico and then go to Europe."

Coyne is contracted and captained English League One club Colchester United but failed to gain regular game time last season.

Good to see we're looking at Socceroos to boost our line up for the season proper, the finals series and the ACL next season.

Adelaide United unveils black and red vision

VAL MIGLIACCIO
June 19, 2009 01:50pm

COLONEL Light's vision landmark statue watched over Adelaide United's official strip launch at Montefiore Hill this afternoon.

Adelaide captain Travis Dodd sported a smarter updated version of the Reds home strip while the nation's under 20 footballer of the year Daniel Mullen was content in the new "All Blacks" alternate strip.

A club major sponsor was the notable absentee on United's new jersey campaign after the Football Federation Australia was handed "Big Brother" club rights after building tycoon Nick Bianco opted out of the franchise in May.

Dodd said he preferred the traditional Reds kit as opposed to Mullen who favoured "nightclub" black.

"It's nice it's something a bit different, to be honest Id rather it (black) than the Reds strip," Mullen said.

But Mullen reconsidered the favouritism when quizzed on whether black was the right option during the A-League's height of summer campaign.

Adelaide's squad will test the resolve of the new Reds strip next Friday night during the friendly clash against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium.

But the new kits won't be available in sports stores until mid-July.

Today's strip launch almost coincides with the club's new season membership drive which starts on Monday.

Looking speccy! I really love the all-red design, and the black away kit with the splash of red over the shoulders is awesome too. Two thumbs up!

It does look nice though. I like the collar too, at least it doesn't look like a KMart tee shirt (GCU anyone?)

bp + sarcasm = fail.

Kit's look good. Mullen should've worn black boots for the shoot. The red boots kill the overall look of the black strip. Coloured boots are just a fad aimed at the limp-wristed to screw them out of more cash.
