You're right RU. Aloisi's getting a bit long in the tooth, injuries may linger, but who can a young man be? And hat about experience? - difficult choice. Maybe Owusu will turn the corner and kick arse in the ACL?

For what it's worth, the next 6 months will show us if Monterosso is going to be the superstar we all hope he is. I mean come on, leading goal scorer in the Youth League 2 years running... that's gotta mean something.

Yes, it means that Vidmar will never play him because he's not ready or he's the same species as the incumbent striker or because he answered a reporter in understandable english or ... Sorry, I can not see why a striker who can not score in the Youth League gets a gig when the striker who can is overlooked. Sure, the YL isn't the A-League but Owusu isn't scoring there either. I am not sure how many ACL games I will get to, will be on a case by case basis sadly. As for the squad, we have 5 free slots we can use and we can also change players - though if we add to the list then we cannot remove player. Also we can actually include all of our visa players in the ACL squad, there can only be 3+1 in the 15 man match day list is all. BTW I hate it when school goes back and my easy 40 minute journey to work becomes a fustrating 50 minute journey!

Since I can't be bothered with the current tail end of the season anymore, I'm turning my attention to the ACL as well. My line-up: Galekovic Mullen - Fyfe - Cornthwaite - Cassio Reid Leckie -------------- Jamieson Flores - Dodd Owusu
Bench: Galekovic, Shin, Barbiero, Rudan, Sarkies, Marrone, Hughes (coz Viddie will choose him)

I like attacking football as much as the next guy, but we have to take into account the opposition - in this case, fast, small, mobile players from countries like Japan and Korea - with technical abilities and finances much greater than our own. Their attack on the break will knock us for dead if we focus a lot of our energy on the attack. We played to our strengths back in 2008 with the defensive 4-5-1, and attacking on the break much as they would. This works in our benefit because: 1) we do have much bigger players. 2) with mobile players like Dodd, Leckie, Marrone and perhaps Flores (no body knows at this point), our counter will be definitely a strength. 3) Viddie won't go all out attack. I wish I was wrong, but these tactics are solid. But since we no longer play against a Vietnamese side (giveaway points for us), I can't say that these tactics will work every time.

We can't run with the ball and shoot. That's kind of my thinking behind a more attacking line up. AU never takes it's chances in front of goal which is why i'm thinking we need to be up there and 'in the mix' so to speak. Having Owusu and Monterosso together will give us the height advantage and Leckie will give us the speed in the box and the desire to shoot that we've been lacking in the HAL. We've proven this season that with no Costanzo and Ognenovski, our defence simply is not what it used to be unfortunately. Either way, i know full well that my fantasy line up and formation will never be used by Viddie so i guess it doesn't really matter. Edited by redeyerob: 28/1/2010 02:53:31 PM

Dodd and Cassio are doing all the running along the wings and Flores, Owusu & Monterosso are there to put as much pressure on the opoonents backline as possible. The team will be playing with sweet FA width but trying to congest the opposition out of the midfield and onto the flanks. Then I wish them luck with their crosses with the bodies we have at the back.

Doesn't that require the ability to move the ball from the backline to the front line is a few seconds and have more than one player involved in the attack? Or are you talking about when we get the ball to Leckie and he takes on the entire opposition team (and beats them half the time) to only find out that even our 'quick' players still haven't gotten out of our half and so he has nowhere to go and nothing to do?

Yep, exactly my point. It sounds strange to say we can't counter-attack for shit so we need for more of an attacking setup! But what i mean is that Leckie is the only player in our team that has proven capable of countering... ie running with the ball!! But even then the poor lad needs support. He needs a midfield right behind him and he needs strikers that are permanently up there!. Vidmar's style has been toooo defensive. Our strikers are either playing alone or sitting too far back. We don't have the right people to play his style and we don't have the right strikers to support 1 up front. Furthermore, the domestic teams have completely worked out Vidmar's one and only game plan as evidenced this season. Who's to say that the other ACL teams haven't worked out Vidmar's system?

Yeah, I guess I was focussing too much on how we actually played in 2008 compared with what we've actually been doing of late (or lack thereof action). That's actually quite an impressive formation now that you've explained the use of 3 central defenders, to which I have no doubt Viddie will not use.

When will you guys get it!? 4-1-3-2. Have I mentioned that before?:d Seriously, we need a pacy and solid back four in Asia. Remember how we were cut to pieces in the final? Down the wings. If we’re undermanned or slow we’re finished. We also need enough attacking threat to keep their backline at home. Playing one striker always allows the opposition to feed more players upfield. I’d like to see us gamble (are you with me Brenton) on youth, pace and passion. Hugene Marrone Mullen Fyfe Jamo Reid Dodd Flores Cassio Leckie Monterosso Bench: Cornthwaite, Sarkies, Barbiero Leckie playing just behind Monterosso, who would be the target-man. If Flores is actually a decent player, he an Reid will give us a decent spine and we’ll have a quick backline and a very versatile, quick attacking unit. Viddie and Phil have the chance to redeem themselves and build the beginnings of next year’s campaign. We have a real chance – if we want it.

Hard one, expecting a score draw probably: 1-1 Of course we could play a really youthful team and then either get smashed 4-0 or smash you 4-0, but the draw is more likely.

Interview with Viddie & FyfeUndermanned Reds aim to keep unbeaten Phoenix record in tactAUFC website wrote:Thursday, 28 January 2010 Adelaide United FC will use its final three Hyundai A-League games, starting with Saturday’s match against Wellington Phoenix at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium, to try and lift itself off the bottom of the table, and in the process build some momentum ahead of its AFC Champions League 2010 campaign.
Unbeaten against the Phoenix in their eight matches against the team from across the Tasman, the Reds have reason to go into the match optimistic of keeping this unblemished record in tact.
Although finals are out of reach, United Coach Aurelio Vidmar believes there is still pressure on his side to win their remaining three games of the season, and he expects the Reds to start putting their foot on the pedal on the run into the start of the AFC Champions League.
“We still need to put in three strong performances in the remaining games of the A-League and that’s what we’ve been planning to do,” Vidmar said.
“We’ve had a pretty good week on the track, they’re fresh, enthusiastic and that’s what we expect, a strong performance.”
“The pressure is always on because we don’t want to go and fall over, we still need to try and put in a strong performance and I think we’re capable of doing that.”
The Reds will be without 251 games of Hyundai A-League experience as they head to New Zealand’s south island, due to a rising injury toll following last Saturday’s defeat to Melbourne.
Central defender Mark Rudan did not reappear after half time against the Victory due to a quad injury, while Alemao copped another heavy knock on the same hip he injured a month ago. Paul Reid and Cassio are also still not over their respective injuries, these absences opening the door for a number of the Reds’ young brigade.
With Lloyd Owusu in China on trial and Cristiano ruled out with a knee strain, Vidmar may turn to Mathew Leckie to lead the Reds’ line, although he may spring a surprise after including 18 year old Francesco Monterosso and Youth League forward Evan Kostopoulos in the travelling party.
Youth Team goalkeeper Nick Munro also gets his first taste of the senior squad as he comes in as the reserve for Eugene Galekovic after Mark Birighitti was forced out with a slight groin strain.
Despite promoting two players from the Youth Team, Vidmar has no qualms in giving his young charges a chance to experience the Hyundai A-League environment.
“Given the situation this week, our hands have been tied in terms of needing to bring in some young kids so we’ve done that, and that’s fine, it’s going to happen sometimes,” Vidmar said.
“They’re young, they’re enthusiastic and I think it gives them a little bit of experience as well.”
One experienced head Vidmar will look to lead by example against the Phoenix is defender Iain Fyfe.
Fyfe, who has played 111 matches in the Hyundai A-League to date, is cautious of a Wellington team coming off consecutive losses, away to Perth and Melbourne, and knows they will be out to regain some confidence at home as they attempt to reach the finals for the first time.
“They’re very good at home and the games I’ve seen them play, they play an attractive brand of football (whereas) away from home they seem to be a different team. So going over although it’s in Christchurch, it’s still in New Zealand, it’s still in front of their home fans and I’m sure they’ll be very good and very switched on,” Fyfe said.
“Coming off a couple of losses I think (Coach) Ricki Herbert will get them back into the groove of things because they’ve still got that carrot there of making the top six and doing a bit of damage.”
With Wellington currently occupying the final spot in the top six, a United victory could open up the finals race. However more importantly for the Reds, Fyfe knows three points will go a long way to recapturing their confidence going into their opening AFC Champions League 2010 match on February 24 against the Pohang Steelers at Hindmarsh Stadium.
“We’ve got to use these games as a stepping stone for the ACL and to find form and to find that confidence,” Fyfe said.
“Against Melbourne we played good football. Our attitude is spot on, there are certain elements of our game that are very good, we just have to put it all together and become a better team.”
The match in Christchurch will make Adelaide United the first Hyundai A-League club to play in every Australian State and Territory, as well as New Zealand’s north and south islands in the space of 12 months.
Kick-Off is at 4.30pm ACDT (7.00pm NZ time) and the match can be seen LIVE on Fox Sports 1 and heard on 107.9 Life FM.
