I dont think that is true. when Mauk was signed there were plenty of people saying he was the type of player that you could build a successful team around. and a lot of people were saying that our early season form slump last year was due to Mauk being out injured. I think Mauk is a good player and will cause a lot of headaches for us when he moves to Macarthur next season, but he definitely has not lived up to his ability this season.

We may be looking at the same situation and seeing different things - I was certainly one of those optimistic Mauk was a good signing. But I do remember plenty were underwhelmed by the signing

Here’s the signing thread (funny to see what we all said):

I'll be disappointed if Mauk does leave. But as said above, good on him for taking the initiative if, indeed, he is going.

Roar apparently making a second attempt to sign Marco Rojas ...

Encouraging news! Robbie's starting to shed his duds. I may not necessarily have agreed with the signing of Scott McDonald but he'll do far better than ROD.

Hope Rojas does turn out somewhere in the league though I wouldn't be surprised if he turns out for the Nix.

The Nix are saying they’re done with signings this month.

My guess would be Roar, WSW and possibly Victory are chasing him plus no doubt overseas clubs.

Roar apparently making a second attempt to sign Marco Rojas ...

that would be a fantastic signing, could play as a creative AM or as a wide striker/winger. he played pretty much every game in the danish league this season so should be fit.
Marco was a fantastic player to watch in the a-league. absolutely  pleasure and pretty much the only non-roar player that i looked forward to watching each week.

we would need to get rid of a visa player though. so there must be some movement happening at the club.

When Mauk was signed there was no love on these pages for the signing, and watching the reaction on-line to this news from Roar fans the majority seem to be either ambivalent or worse, “good riddance” is the sentiment.

I had high hopes when Mauk arrived, but he seems to be one of those players that doesn’t fit with the players around him - he’s another Caletti: has the talent but at the end of the match leaves you frustrated that you haven’t seen it.

Some people seem to think 10 is his best position but he’s unable to displace O’Shea or Akbari as back up there; he’s no number 6 although O’Neill is failing to make that position his own.

When Mauks on the bench we play better - that’s pretty telling imo

We will have to agree to disagree on Mauk.
However his form  now is a result of RF and his methods. At the start of the season and in preseason he was playing much better.Just like the whole team.
Judging his value based on our performance against the worsts team and an understrength poor team,WSW is pointless.
Just as it is to say we played better because Marotovic was in the team.
We could say we played better because Hingert is in the team or JOS played central or RF played with two up front or because we didnt lose. All totally meaningless.
We could do a lot better maybe if JOS wasnt in the team .He doesnt score ,isnt quick and doesnt defend well.Maybe he is part of this slow build up problem.
People are beguiled by his tricks. But for what most consider to be our best visa player ,he hasnt got one man of the match .
Maybe Akbari or Mauk playing AM would improve the team.
All speculation.
In my opinion the whole team would play better if we stopped this slow build up play .
Does anyone believe if we had JMacor Taggart in the team they would be able to score lots of goals?
I dont think so.

I agree.  Mauk is a barometer of Fowler's mishandling of our club.

I really do fear for the Roar if Fowler is given another season, which I expect will be the case, if for no other reason that it will too expensive to pay out his contract.  I have seen nothing so far to suggest that he is up to the job.  Quite the contrary.

But I reckon we've got him for next season, so we can only hope that he reveals himself as a fast learner.  Unfortunately the signs so far are not encouraging.  If anything, he seems to be going backwards.

If Mauk is allowed to go,I am afraid RF will leave Roar with nothing but dross when he eventually gets sacked.
Mauk is our best Aussie player.
It's going to be great watching Macca trying to outpace a high defensive line in the hot sun, when Gillesphey longballs him.

Why do you assume it’ll be too expensive to pay Fowler out - he’s not on “big bucks” according to Pourre

But pace in players is not required for rapid ball movement - you can stuff your team with some fast players and move the ball forward by running with it (as Nix did for their second (?) goal yesterday) or you have the ball move at pace (as it can move faster than any player can run) which is dependent not on a players pace but on a players ability to read the game, find space between the defensive lines, receive the ball and distribute quickly to advancing players ..... McDonald hasn’t got pace but he’s certainly got skill for the latter (that’s the holding 9 discussion from yesterday).

Fowler’s problem when transitioning out of defence is there is literally no one for the back 3 to pass too so the ball gets bogged down at the back. Roars best route forward at the moment is Gillesphey’s 60m diagonal switch balls (which are things of beauty).

I am assuming this is why ROD and DWH have fallen out of favour - both run like tanks stuck in forward gear.

I’ve no idea why McDonald is being signed but to assume it wont or can’t fix slow transition is one-dimensional - it could if he’s used appropriately

yep ....I think it is naive to simply say Roar are too slow because they pass the ball around backwards and sideways.I also agree that we don't need superfast mids to move a ball quickly . A good team can play as the Roar have been but simply turn on a few incisive quick balls to take apart a defence.
A prime example of this is Wellington. They did it very well against Western Utd last week.
....another example was the Muratovic/Inman quick interplay on the weekend for Inmans goal.
That was a superb transition.

I am very dubious about Fowler but I am prepared to give him a little more time .
He is correct in saying "we are not a million miles away".
If he can bring someone a little more creative into midfield I can see more and quicker transitions from possession into attack .
I also agree we lack defensive grit and cohesion.
I think much of the blame is leveled at our backs when it is often our mids who do not track back properly and leave the backs stranded.
(I also think Neville , Gillesphey , Hingert,Pepper and Bowles  are not really A-League starting standard ...I know many disagree with me there but that's my view )

I would hope he is not on big bucks too, given he is a coach with little experience and in his first senior appointment. If Roar payed big bucks for him then they are just paying for his name, and that is a ridiculous basis on which to hire a coach.

they said they paid him according to his coaching experience - and I t’s not like Fowler needs the money, he could have bought the club, hired himself, and still had spare cash.

I like the attitude and endeavour of both Hingert and Pepper, to me Hingert just makes A League starting standard, but not Pepper. But I certainly agree that Neville, Gillesphey and especially Bowles aren't up to starting standard. The criminal part of this is Gillesphey, to me it is absolutely imperative that all imports are comfortably A League starting standard (despite his booming left foot Waz!!).

It’s not easy to defend Fowler when his team is sitting in 9th place and playing some clunky football at times but looking at it holistically:

What’s improved:

- Discipline. This time last year we’d had 5 red cards.

- Fitness. We are fitter than last year and look fitter than most teams which is probably why we’re scoring so many goals in the last 15

- Defence. The defence is better but still accident prone.

What’s not improved:

- Results. They’re similar to last year.

- Playing style. I thought JA’s style was poor but RF is just as bad. There’s no clear pattern  as to how they want to play.

- Visa Players. Our visa players last year were performing well below par with only Eric exceeding expectations; most fans hold similar views on this crop.

So we are a ways off where we all want to be but in RFs defence he is only six points off third - but few believe closing that six point gap is achievable.

So at best “the Jury’s out” at worst people have made  their minds up.

He’s got two home games and away to CCM before SFC away again. He simply has to pick up 2 wins and a draw from those.

We live in hope.
If somehow we secure Rojas, that would be an excellent start.
Having someone other than a striker to pass the ball forward to on a fast break would help a lot.Along with his one on one dribbling and scoring.
Inman on the left,Striker person  up front  and Rojas on the right ,with Mauk in the center and all,of a sudden you have threats across the park.
JOS and AON screeners.

Just noticed from the Olyroos page that Aiden O'Neil is only 21. I guess that cuts him some slack as far as trying to dominate the centre of midfield. He's going to get better in that role over the next couple of years.

If Macca comes on board:
Will be too slow and whilst it is not incorrect that you can move the ball around the forward line fast irrespective, having that one extra fast player adds to the strike pool as a point of difference. Plus you have to have the forwards in sufficient numbers to compensate for lack of speed if the ball needs to be moved quickly without hoofing to create better goal scoring opportunities. More numbers up front will expose the defence and we don't have a brilliant defence that will cope too well. McDonald will add experience however so it will be an improvement albeit a small one. Not a player to fix Roar's woes.

If Rojas comes on board:
Faster than Macca plus significantly better ball skills. Provides more creativity and is exactly the type of player Roar needs right now. Very positive move if it comes to fruition. Of course if the player is not in form or is not up to standard then it won't work either, but that is another issue as it is the type of player that is the matter in question as is getting away from the sterile Brit football style.

Interesting to see if RF and the club sees the light.

Of course if the player is not in form then Rojas will be a lost cause as well.

Interesting to see if RF and the club sees the light.

The two of them signed (and I don’t think we’ll get either tbh) but the two of them end the discussion on pace because Rojas has it in spades.

3-5-2 requires overloads to be developed by the five men in midfield plus one or two if the defenders pushing on (it’s why we see Gillesphey in such advance positions a lot of the time) so the question of pace sits not in the front two - it doesn’t hurt if they have it - but in whether those midfield five have it, and they do, it’s just rare Roar move the ball with any forward purpose or that the midfield move forward to create passing options.

Did they sign with some other club? Pity for us if true for Rojas. Would have been a perfect fit to aid the unadventuress attack.

When Rojas left the a league i thought he was one of the most dominant players we have seen in a single season. Looked far above the standard. Shame he flopped overseas. Would be an amazing pick up for Brisbane. Feel it would be hard to sign him though, his family love Melbourne and there is a big Chilean population there. It was one of the reasons he left Phoenix for Victory originally.

A real shame because Brisbane is becoming an amazing city to live in. Needs to be more of a selling point. Easy for foreigners to recognize Melbourne and Sydney and opt to play there.
