9-1? What a disgrace!

I haven’t been following the team but seeing the recent results which contain 5-1 to North Korea, 7-0 to Japan and now this tells me something seriously gone wrong through women’s youth development ranks.

We are a long way behind these countries and I can only fear what the Matildas could look like in 10 years with results like these as a future indicator.

Just saw the highlights jeez that really looked like amateur hour on some of those goals. The Korean girls did finish well though to be fair to them.

Do you think you'll be OK?

Help for the distressed.

7-0, 9-1. No World Cup brah.

The future looks bright hey Muz. Do you think you’ll come through this okay ? Here, have a 💩 shaped chocolate fudge cookie..that will make you feel better. It’s on the house.

To qualify for a WC.

lose 9-1 to South Korea. Over 70 minutes in our own half.

Semi final 7-0 loss to japan.

5-1 loss to nth Korea.

could barely get over both Thailand and Vietnam.

Those results are very concerning.

We can all say that results at youth level are not an indicator of future success, but with those results it shows just how off the pace we are.

We have a significant level of players coming through, but the quality seems to be lacking in the women’s development pathway. The pathway to the men’s game seems a bit more hopeful, but still concerning signs there too.

What’s the solution though? Coaches are one thing, but the curriculum is the same for anyone taking the role, as that is what is mandated to be used in that system. Ripping that apart and starting again will take another 10 years to get  traction, but something just isn’t clicking at this stage.

If the FFA want to make women’s youth development better then they need to appoint a technical director for women’s football only and priority in that role should be to create a framework or a curriculum seperate to the FFA NC one which focuses on developing international level players from a younger age.

The Future Matildas program doesn’t go deep enough considering the technical level of the Australian girls is very low compared to the Japanese and Koreas(both sides).

I feel not enough focus has been done on the women’s youth development side as most of it has done to correct the men’s side I feel the women’s need to be a stand alone priority from now on.

Maybe a national Womens Futsal team would be something....has Australia ever had one. The odd player will make the transition

Certainly couldn’t hurt.

Futsal is a very important part of a development pathway in my view, but it’s not a view shared by all. The skills that can be fine tuned in Futsal can be very useful if incorporated into the training program with the full sized field game.

It’s baffling in general how futsal hasn’t been incorporated in our youth development pathways and system considering the technical deficiencies of Australian players both male and female compared to our Asian counterparts who have it as a crucial part in their development.

Futsal is also a great substitute for developing street smarts as well considering the diminishing street football culture we lost.

Our leaders are still stuck in the stone ages it seems...

Shocking how bad Micah is as a Gk atm.
surely doesn’t remain with the matildas as 3rd choice.

Willacy, Campbell, dumont, all better 3rd choice keepers atm.
simon has don’t very little, give another striker or winger a shot.

Because usually 3rd choice is a future keeper prospect. U25.
dumont is 28 in 2 weeks. Arnold is second choice and 2-3 years youngerr

Atm, in the League.rr..

willacy 95
campbell 95
khamis 95
coelho 96
simonsen 97
micah 97
worth 97
boric 98
whyman 99
goldsmith 00
chapple 01
grove 01

highest potential is whyman, then maybe simonsen.
beyond that a long way to Templeman (the u17 matikdas keeper) who is only 16, born 03.

Obviously those on contract get first dibs otherwise it an extra $250 per day per player not contracted as a Matilda. The only exception is Gorry who apparently does not have a Matilda's contract.

I think its a case of Milicic hasn't got the balls to drop certain players (even though there are players he can pick from who are performing a lot better) or he learnt nothing from the recent WC where our deficiencies were there for all to see.

Very interesting article Muz.

It will be interesting to follow the growth in participation at the grassroots and see how quickly the best talents move into the elite development pathways.  It is also good to see the W-League clubs being let in to the women's competitions at WNPL level and setting up youth teams in that area.

I personally think that the Matildas are slowly on the way down at international level and have been for 4 or 5 years but the player migration to football in Europe might hold us where we are until the surge in participation brings new talent.
