what's wrong with that?
realistically, it ain't ever going to happen without some level of support

And its an election year, just got to get both sides to commit. Easier said than done, though.

Because crony capitalism is the worst kind of capitalism.

The Bakries are billionaires. If they want the stadium so badly they could:

Take out a loan to fund the stadium
Liquidate their assets to fund the stadium
Take out equity in the club or the stadium to fund the stadium

Any so called money into the economy because of the stadium is complete BS. All you are doing is simply moving existing money around where it would've spent somewhere else in the economy or saved.

I spend way too much time doing that on google maps with many stadiums all over the world. :)

In fact just now at work I was giving myself a tour of the Castelao in Brazil, great stadium!

Thanks. Another unproductive thing to do in the office :)

A recap from info I've sourced on here, Twitter as well as some people in the space.

We can pretty much rule out the following:
Ballymore
Perry Park
QSAC/QEII
Spencer Park

As for the the highly unlikelys:
Albion Park is highly unlikely because I happen to know Racing Queensland are chasing big dollars for that from developers. It would also need Racing Queensland approval who aren't mentioned.
RNA Showgrounds  is a bust because there's heritage rules on some existing stands and that would mean working with the RNA which isn't ideal apparently. The previous stadium plans for the RNA always involved circular pitches because the RNA had a stipulation to still use it for the show so unlikely there will ever be a Football pitch there.

Fong could have been using the word, 'reconfigure' very loosely and transport could mean 'car' as Waz mentioned. If car is an option then places like the airport and Eagle Farm come into play with access to the Gateway and tunnels. Not saying it's there, just an example.

I still think the key is that the article mentions support from Stadiums Queensland is needed. I did some work with Stadiums Queensland many years ago and knowing a little about about their governance structure there's only two scenarios where their support would be required (I believe):

1) They want to put this stadium on one of their facilities. The only options left with space are Chandler, Boondal and the Tennis Centre. Adjacent to QSAC could have been an option but Waz reckons it's not there.

2) The Roar are hoping to partner with Stadiums Queensland on the project which would give the an increased chance of securing State funding given Stadiums QLD is a wholly owned but the State Government.

Some people on Twitter reckon they've heard from sources it's at Annerley FC, but that could be hot air, not sure.

Update: Checked in with a friend, apparently there are some provisions in the Act somewhere that give Stadiums Queensland some kind of wide ranging right of refusal over other major sporting developments, or something along those lines. That could through a spanner in the works.

I'm not sure if it's mentioned above, but what about near the velodrome and aquatic centre? There's plenty of space, or they could reuse the old velodrome. Too far out of town, I guess?

It's been ages since I've been there but isn't the chandler site on a bit of hill? In bush? Not sure that would be cheap. But I don't know it well though. Initially I thought it was unlikely because of distance and lack of transport. But then again, there is car parking on site. Could be an option I guess. Probably depends on their definition of close to CBD. Compared to their base at Logan, well then sure, it's close to the City.

The speculation is fun ....but most here (including me) have NFI .
I have said for years that Boondall is a great option but it is a long way from the Southside.
I have also always spruiked land near the airport but as some have mentioned flood lights may be a problem around there ( that is just a maybe ).

I've been to Boondall once for a concert and farken hell, never again. It might as well be in Toowoomba for anyone living south of Ascot.

If any team was going to go that far north, they might as well go the whole hog and just commit to Redcliffe, at least there is a bar within shouting distance.

The airport was one of the sites suggested a while back, and there’s no problem with lights and height of the stadium.

That would be a “greenfield build” perfect for Bear Stadiums but Roar are specifically talking about refurbishing/repurposing existing infrastructure

my understanding is they haven’t selected a site yet, instead they have several options and are basically in a pre-election “beauty contest” hoping for the best deal to come up.

I don't know much about Brisbane other than visiting for a week once but from searching on Google Earth and Google Maps I've always thought that Western Districts Rugby Clubs set up at Toowong Memorial Park could become a great boutique stadium.  The existing structure on the western side of the ground already covers the 100m length try line to try line and the existing seating could be increased from 300 to say 1,000 capacity.  The continuous floor to ceiling glazing on the first floor would be able to be modified for corporate boxes etc..  On the other 3 sides a single tier roofed stand  with a capacity of 10,000+ would finish off a nice upgrade.  Pity about the large trees on the eastern side though.

NB.  You can view the existing stand from ground level on the pitch on Google Maps.  Just move the little yellow person onto the blue dot on the pitch.

it would be great but it isnt going to happen. most of the building is a radiology/physio/medical centre and a cafe. no way that they will close to allow a stadium to be built (not to mention the rugby club wouldn't give it up)

But the vision for that is to turn it in to a Central Park for Brisbane not private land. Plus there’s no transport there.

there absolutely is transport there Waz. there is a dedicated busway that runs directly through vic park adding an exchange there for a stadium would be minimal cost (and is likely to happen anyway with the redevelopment) it is also a similar walk to exhibition train station which is a new hub for the cross river rail already under construction. parking is a little bit of a problem for it but during the ekka the bottom fields are used as parking so may not be too bad.

Vic park was also under consideration for some small stadiums for the olympic bid. in terms of a perfect world vic park and perry park would be the best options however i think they are the least likely to ever happen.

I found out about the radiology centre after I posted when I did more research and found that the project was completed only a few years ago.  Looking at it as an example of what could be done at another site I'd expect that corporate facilities for a boutique stadium could be completed for a slightly higher cost ie., more than the $8.3m project cost.  Also the concept of getting commercial tenants for part of a stadium development is worth looking in to.

When you look around on Google Earth or Maps there are plenty of "possibles" purely from a punters perspective but we don't know what caveats and restrictions apply to each.
I can see even something like an Aussie Rules or Rugby Club ground being serious options . Many of them are seemingly languishing.
At least this thread is diverting all the negatives about the demise of the league .
I very much doubt the Bakries would be considering this if they could not see a future for the Roar .
Maybe this was leaked now to charge up the fans a little ....seems to have worked .

Worked for me, the idea of having our own boutique stadium, makes the future look very good which has certainly made me happy.

It says even more than that.

Others would be contemplating why would a club commit to such expense particularly with all the doom and gloom and little certainty with return of investment ie diminishing revenue eg sponsors, Fox etc?

It says to all and sundry that football is going nowhere. It's here to stay and has a future. That abandoning the ship because of a cyclic downturn is not a realistic option.

Sleeman Sports complex is not CBD

Did I say it was?

"Talk is growing louder up north that Brisbane Roar are getting serious about plans for a new boutique home ground - and this column believes there are a number of locations being explored.

The most intriguing and inventive option is in Chandler, a suburb 14km south-east of the Brisbane CBD. There are two velodromes at the Sleeman Sports Complex - the new indoor one, named for Anna Meares, and the old outdoor one, which sources in Queensland say could be successfully converted into a football stadium.

But there are several other possibilities, all of them still on the table. One is near the Brisbane Airport, where the prospect of a new stadium has been discussed for years.Another is in Victoria Park, just north of the city, where a golf course is set to be transformed into a 45-hectare green space. And another is in the Logan-Beenleigh corridor, where the Roar have strong political connections. The Roar refused to comment, but there are a perfect storm of circumstances that could see the long-held dream of an alternative to the 55,000-seat Suncorp Stadium finally come true through a public/private partnership. The first is the pending Queensland state election. The second is Brisbane's bid to host the 2032 Olympics. The third is FFA's bid to host the 2023 Women's World Cup - which, if successful, could put Suncorp off-limits to the other codes for several weeks.Football Queensland have made a boutique stadium a strategic priority for the game, while new FFA chief executive James Johnson is a Brisbane boy, and fully understands the lay of the land. Watch this space."
