WGMG: Feeling guilty about my best man's wedding next weekend. I live in Canberra, while my wife has severe asthma that last time she had a flu, she was put in ICU for a week.
So, my friends wedding is in my hometown (rural, inland NSW. No COVID cases yet), which I am in the bridal party for, the only person outside of the town (I think).
Wedding reception has been postponed, but the wedding ceremony is expected to go ahead for the time being, with just the bridal party and close family. But I'm not sure I can make it anymore..

WGMG: Why isn't there a thread dedicated to my stupid in-laws.

The same in-laws that went cruising only a few weeks ago.
1 came back sick,  didn't get tested cause he's an arsehole and did whatever he wanted.
2 did get tested,  1 isolated til negative and 1 (the partner of the guy who didn't get tested) didn't isolate til negative.

Well now the guy (who is my sister-in-laws partner) hes headed off camping with a bunch of his bogan mates, all in their 40s, not healthy at all. Completely selfish.

I am lucky my wife is very independent and was smart enough to know at a young age that her family were idiots and literally did the exact opposite to everything they did.

China. The government. The way they do business. The locust-like mentality of many (not all, cape-wearers) of them who strip the shelves of items those in their adopted homeland need so they can send it back en masse to where their true loyalties clearly lie because fuck thinking about anything but how you can personally gain from a crisis.

If this doesn't make people re-think how we do business with them, I don't know what will.

I got told it was postponed, and then about an hour after I posted that, I got told it was going ahead with, I think a couple more than 5.
11 people I think, with the celebrant. They're doing it outdoors instead of the church. Both sets of parents, brides brother and wife, and groom's two brothers

The double standard over these protests. All the intelligentsia wetting themselves over social distancing at the 5G / open the economy rallies and yet having nothing to say about the BLM rallies.

Totally agree.

I can understand the anger in the U.S but it feels like confected outrage in Australia. People could have protested in big numbers for decades over indigenous deaths in incarceration but never did.

Are we so uncreative that we just parrot whatever the happens in America? Not exactly the best example to follow.

I am similar. I am very much for Indigenous Australians to stand for their rights and all that stuff, but I couldn't help but think we were riding on the USA coat-tails with all of this and half the people in Australia protesting were actually just there because they don't like Donald Trump and/or want to get in a fight and/or want to do what NBA culture dictates them to. I genuinely feel a large amount of the point for Indigenous Australians was missed by doing this.

I posed these questions or issues with some friends on the wkend, and just got told in response to "check my privilege". That cleared it all up then, I guess....

The irony is the protesters are revealing their close minded, anglocentric view of the world. Plenty of  recent and far more shocking racism and police brutality in Brazil for example but that doesn't rate a mention for some reason.

I got told I was too narrow-minded if I was worried that the protests could contribute to another wave of coronavirus. But in my head is it not narrow-minded to exclude that possibility?

I also keep hearing that "aboriginals had their own George Floyd moment and it passed" and I'm still struggling to comprehend what they're trying to say with that to be totally truthful.

I don't think you can make that connection. Certainly the media is very close minded and anglocentric. The protest organisers took advantage of the attention that the media have given to the US protests to give it an Australian slant (i.e. the issues we have here with police and indigenous people).

That's not to say that some went out because of George Floyd or because they "hate Trump", but it definitely wasn't WAR's (the protest organisers) motivation.

I'm not specially talking about the organisers. All the power to those groups who have been trying in vain to bring light to the indigenous incarceration issue for decades. Hell, I've learnt some things this week as well.

Problem is a lot of the protesters weren't there for that and I doubt many will continue their activism on the subject beyond attending a protest and posting a black box on instagram.

My personal point of view is protesting in a pandemic is problematic but at the same time it's an important part of democracy. Queensland made people go out and vote during a stricter phase of restrictions.

I just think its too easy to pick out a sub-group from a much larger group and use it to discredit the whole thing.

Well it's been 13 days now in NSW without a community acquired COVID case so fingers crossed this protest doesn't jump start anything.

It isn't an attempt to discredit the whole thing. The local context is something that deserves attention. I just question the sincerity of a large percentage of those who attended. Bandwagoners tend to hang around whilst something is new and fashionable only to abandon the cause for something fresh and exciting later on. Then again maybe I'm just cynical and don't like to follow the crowd.

I think it’s been like 11 days and the clock may be brought back to zero since they have an unknown.

Anyway, I agree that many are bandwagoning for the sake of protesting/social media profiles.

Gawd,
In that case there is far more movies etc that are similar to Gone with the Wind talking BLM, Oprah and Whoopie Golberg for The Colour Purple is just one of so many more.
Why so selective.
You could then look into the countless English sitcoms of the '70's referencing black banter - Love They Neighbour, On The Bus's etcetc
Might as well wipe out countless more.
