In recent years an interesting saying has popped up in media & advertising circles that "every brand shoud be it's own media company" which is essentially saying that you can control the direction & exposure of your product more directly by broadcasting it yourself.   Something for the FFA to think about.

If like Scotty from Marketing is talking about that this lockdown bullshit is going to go on for months then the day after it ends things aren't going to go back to normal because by the time that happens there isn't going to be anything left to be able to restart the league in a normal manner.  Perhaps they should consider broadcasting things themselves when this is all over.

What is a certainty that the previous sticking out the begging bowl for TV money to fund the governing body & clubs operations is finished.

My partner is a front-line Medical professional and they are expecting 6 months to at least and possibly longer - a lot of them are thinking that normality, such as it becomes, will only return when we have a vaccine, which is 15 months away.

In a nutshell: -
  • Clubs will be paid the final installment for this year or Fox will be in breach
  • If no more games this season FFA would be in breach and Fox free to tear up contract leading to the iHal becoming properly independent before the end of the current contract.
  • FFA already looking for backup TV partners for next year
Fox Sports, FFA in game of chicken for A-League broadcast rights

By Dominic Bossi

The future of the A-League's TV rights could come down to a game of chicken between Fox Sports and Football Federation Australia with the two organisations waiting for the other to flinch before claiming a breach of contract. After a meeting between FFA chief executive James Johnson and Foxtel chief Patrick Delaney on Friday, the A-League clubs were told they will likely receive their final instalments of the broadcast deal for this year, but were given no assurances for the future.

Senior A-League sources suggest Fox Sports will likely be in breach of its contract if it does not pay its near $12 million bill to FFA on April 15. By keeping the deal intact for the remainder of this season, Fox could force FFA to breach the terms of the deal if the A-League is unable to deliver matches after receiving the final payment for this financial year. With next to no chance of games being played in the coming months, Fox Sports could potentially walk away from the broadcast deal, arguing the FFA and A-League could not meet the terms of their agreement.

FFA will convene on April 22 to decide if and when the season can continue, but there are faint hopes of games being played in the foreseeable future. Foxtel declined to comment on its deal with FFA and the A-League when contacted by the Herald on Saturday and are yet to confirm their position to the games' stakeholders.

Should the broadcaster decide to walk away from Australian football after a 15-year partnership, it could allow the A-League to accelerate plans to become formally independent of FFA.

The $57 million-a-year broadcast deal between FFA and Foxtel has kept the competition bound to the FFA, but if that was to be torn apart before the start of next season, as several administrators expect, there will be little standing in the way of the clubs pushing for immediate autonomy.

Western Sydney Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer, who is the head of the Australian Professional Football Clubs Association – the body representing all 11 A-League clubs – said the road map for the competition's separation was being finalised by lawyers. Lederer urged Fox Sports to honour the remainder of the TV deal until 2023, but would not rule out the process of independence being accelerated by a possible premature end of the agreement.

"FFA and the clubs are aligned," he said. "The FFA are well aware that there will be an independent A-League. There's no question, there’s just a question around the legalities and things like that. All the stakeholders, the states know that, the FFA know that."

Those fears are real enough for the clubs and FFA to already look for back-up broadcast options in the event the A-League is left without a TV partner for the start of next season. Perth Glory owner Tony Sage remained in the dark over the future of the broadcast deal and was far from certain Fox would continue to televise the league.

"Everyone wants the league to survive, [but] we may not have a TV deal – it's all been in the press that Fox may cancel. We don't know," Sage said. "We don't know if we're going to get the payment that was due in April. Fox have not asked one owner to be on their channel because I think the thing we would say is, 'is our broadcasting deal safe?' They don't want to hear that, they just want to put the coaches association or players union on, which is not fair."

For the moment, A-League is the only football code to have received 100% of its broadcast revenue.
That's huge.
Other codes will be lucky to receive one quarter.
We can cross the next bridge when it's time to cross it.

You bullied libel for a year or more and now he lives in a special place in your brain. Good on him. I probably don't share much of his views, or even how he puts them at times, but it is interesting that you never attempt to constructively engage and counter his point of view intelligently.  You just play dumb.  I think it's play?

If the HALs pulling power is only 150,000 it’s worth over $100m to a Telco.

If that is true then

200,000 is worth $133.3m to a telco
250,000 is worth $166.6m to a telco
300,000 is worth $200m to a telco
350,000 is worth $233.33m to a telco
400,000 is worth $266.66m to a telco
450,000 is worth $300,000 to a telco
500,000 is worth $333.33m to a telco

If you are a telco and thought that 150,000 is a low ball number for new NBN subscriptions then you could offer up to that $100m a year with little prospect of a loss. By giving the 'product' for want of a better word the money to operate and market effectively the chances are a larger number of subscriptions is likely to grow.  And each subscription from there on in is icing on the cake.

If that Telco is Optus who has the EPL and J-League already the added content of the HAL gives a real incentive to move away from Telstra and Foxtel.

If that Telco is Optus who has the EPL and J-League already the added content of the HAL gives a real incentive to move away from Telstra and Foxtel.

You can get the Optus app and pay $14.99 a month for Optus sport, without an Optus plan.  This would get you all the football on Optus.  For $180.00 a year.
Thats less than $30 million a year.
Its available free on SOME optus plans - the expensive ones.  But why pay for an expensive Optus plan, when you can be on a cheap one, with anybody, and get Optus sport for an extra $15.00

And 150 000 is lowball?  Really.  And your talking incremental numbers here.

You have to take the number of people who might be interested in paying Optus for the A league, and subtract all those already paying Optus for the what they already have.
I would consider 150000 high ball, like, really high ball.

And the idea that Optus would return all the value of new subscribers to the A league, even if they could determine how many that was.  Ludicrous.
Based on, the idea with exposure, a larger number of subscriptions is likely to grow?  Wasnt that the FTA plan.  More exposure would grow the supporter base?  But there is LESS exposure on Optus, you have to have Optus sport to watch, the people exposed are the ones that already have it.

ROFLMAO.  I don't think about you at all, or care, or ever will beyond the moment I read the trash in this thread and the few memories it brought forth.

There was a great gnashing of teeth a while back here about why people had stopped coming.

My view is simple.  It had lost its way from a place for information and forays into banter to a forum of lies, slander and bullying.
The moderators also removed the characters that made the place interesting.
No more Ardthro, Nikk or COYS.  Not because they were "ist" or indulged in "isms" but because the attacks on them were constant from a loud minority.

Maybe you can get them to remove Libel too.  Maybe they've learnt.
More lizard pics thanks. The joy!  Listen.  You might hear the laughter from your distant hideyhole.  Listen!

Based on, the idea with exposure, a larger number of subscriptions is likely to grow?  Wasnt that the FTA plan.  More exposure would grow the supporter base?  But there is LESS exposure on Optus, you have to have Optus sport to watch, the people exposed are the ones that already have it.

The point is the NBN has close to 7 million connections. Optus have 15% of that market. If they can grow their NBN market by bundling in a Fetch box with football like the ones they have in the EPL and J League then there is a huge upside in that market. The only suggestion about returning all the value to the A League was if they thought there was an upside that did not turn out. You might also notice that my first line was - if that is true.

You are looking at it from the football consumer side saying I can get football for $15. I'm looking at it from the telco side looking to increase my market share in a lucrative market by attracting them through football - not just the A League but a growing stable.

Why don't you post a lizard picture?

You bullied libel for a year or more and now he lives in a special place in your brain. Good on him. I probably don't share much of his views, or even how he puts them at times, but it is interesting that you never attempt to constructively engage and counter his point of view intelligently.  You just play dumb.  I think it's play?

He does come across as somebody who really cares.  That is worth a lot in troubled times.

Fucking lol, you serious dude?

My view is simple.  It had lost its way from a place for information and forays into banter to a forum of lies, slander and bullying.

Probably some truth in that.
Could also say that we mirror the wider football community, the diminishing of interest in Australian football is right across the board.
What Australian football forums have survived?
Remember about 12 years ago how we had many vibrant ones, there's next to nothing now.

The gradual loss of hope has been painful to watch.  When the history of the A League is written, the Lowys and Gallop will be called to account.   A litany of vanity, nepotism and incompetence.

A lot of that is also due to forums in general being 'superseded' by social media. It has happened across not just sports forums but other areas too.

Or having initiated the most successful league and standard of professionalism in the country's history. Got Australia into Asia. Successive world cup appearances. Developed a woman's professional league, youth league. Record income into a sport that was on its knees. Led the sport into mainstream acceptance at least multiple times more than it was before. One can go on. But it appears you have forgotten these.

Yes, the old FFA eventually lost their way, but what has the current crop of FFA done in their 20 months? It lacks strong leadership. Unable to unite in times of need. Has no pulling power with large sponsors, corporations or government. This is where incompetence is better demonstrated.

In a resort somewhere

Although you could argue that these sorts of boards were the very first forms of social media, but yes, they probably have been superseded by newer forms.

I agree with most of that, but it is also true that Lowy snr was guilty of nepotism, and on that score, he trashed his reputation and legacy.
As for the new board and Chair, yep, you can already see it will add up to a big fat zero, with or without the pandemic, but that's definitely the nail in the coffin.  The new Chair has one tenth of the clout Lowy snr had, and with each passing day, that is becoming more and more obvious.
For the time being, not sure for how long, but it will definitely be a case of:  hello old soccer!  where have you been the last 15 years?
