Story breaking on the telescum

Senior Dogs approaches Dean Pay demanding changes to the backline... 4 senior players hit Deano up it reads.

They Asked him to put DWZ on the wing, put Hoppa to 1,  move Reimis back to the wing and bring Blue Eyes and Harper to the centre’s

Dean clearly didn’t listen or entertain them ideas.

It’s never good when players are demanding who gets picked where, but even they can see that what is being dished up isn’t acceptable & changes need to happen

Similar ideas... I don't blame the players, but it shouldn't have been leaked to the media.

Not a good look for the coach... if the players aren’t buying into what he’s got as a coach, then unfortunately he’s lost the players!

If anything our club has been a tight ship with leaks since the hot dog guy was relegated to Burwood rd...
Could it be just another attempt by those fekkers to destabilise our club???...
At least the possibility of a single shred of possible unlikely truth is on their side this time...

I would say our backs probably approached the coach and asked he drop nearly all of the forwards.

We have some real ineffective forwards in this team.
Sue, Elliot, RFM and Renouf can stay along with Ogden. The rest can go. Even jacko.

I think Bateman's wife and daughter are in the UK, he is playing footy to make a good life for his daughter.

He will be happier in the UK.

The Broncos have an abundance of talented young players, they can't keep them all.
We need a quality experienced prop and 2nd rower, and a good hooker.
Any other player we sign should be young and talented.

Bateman would have made a difference, but his primary motivation was money, and that often doesn't work out.

Yes, while he is a good player, I'm not sure being driven by money will result in team attitude change.

I'm an completely dumbfounded how during pre-game training, our team practices a training drill whereby they run in a wave from tryline to 20m line, short passing ball from right to left and then left to right.

Players running together as a team, and in support. Exactly what I want them doing on every play, yet come game time, it all disappears. Gone. Never to be seen again again.

There is a horrible horrible mentality in this team that prevents them from doing the basics right. That training drill proves they are at least capable of doing it, yet their subconscious mind takes over and they fall into bad habits.

I primarily blame most of our forwards for this as they are in centre of ruck and first receivers on every set.

All we bloody need is for just 1 other player to run alongside the guy hitting the ball up. Whether its 1 pass wide from dummy half or 2 passes wide, it doesn't matter, we just need another player to run off the shoulder of the hitup to put the defence in 2 minds. Yes, its abit energy sapping and it's a decoy play more often than not, but it turns the defence out physically and mentally and offers slower line speed in opposition as they have to hesitate before retreating the 10.

Watch the storm play as well as many other teams. The teams that can sustain this play for most of game, often win the ruck and field position. You obviously have to also have intent and skill to offload or short pass every now and then to take advantage of staggered defence or opening. Some of our guys are just not up to this and that is a skill deficiency issue.

But before replace the hacks with skill, we need to at least improve our play.

Do the above and we will go a long way to looking more competitive and win games on our own doing.

It is important that halves can play square and but the receiver at an advantage with respect to the defence, not a disadvantage.
Foran does it, Wakeham and Averillo can do it.
That is momentum, with that momentum a good dummy half should put 1-2 runners over the advantage line generating further momentum, then you can set a deep (we are always too shallow) backline and shift off a crisp passing movement with a minimum number of passes...  if that breaks down, players simply run, or drop off a forward.,

It all starts with the halves and dummy half  generating momentum, but putting runners in good positions

You are right, team mates running decoys, or even better as  receiving option, makes it easier to give the runner momentum.

We don't want the 2021 coaching position being a drag on recruitment and retention...

The COVID-19 shutdown has been bad luck for Pay he really need the team firing out of the blocks rounds 3 & 4.

That compounded the bad luck from the loss of CHN and Okunbour... all things beyond Pay's control, that is why he needed to do a good job with the things he could control.

IMO a win against the Dragons should buy him 2 more weeks, a good performance against the Roosters would be acceptable, but a win is needed against the Sharks.

So we decide by the end of June at the latest if  we are getting a new coach for 2021, in our position that coach has to be someone who we think will help attract players...
Once we decide, put everything into getting the new guy.

Depending on how bad things are, we can punt Pay early, and have Georgalis take over for the remainder of the season...

No doubt Pay has been unlucky, but is is also guilty of not maximising his chances of retention, after Round 2, it was very apparent what needed to be done, tough decisions needed to be made, and instead he picked the wrong options.

Cogger was a Corey Hughes type of selection... in previous era's coaches have gotten away with it, but when you luck is out, it is out.

You are right, team mates running decoys, or even better as  receiving option, makes it easier to give the runner momentum.

It should not be up to the halves to put players through holes. It's up to the halves to spot a player running to a position of advantage and releasing the ball at the right time.

Foran runs to the line all too often, drags his centres and edge back rowers with him and either gets smashed running the ball or releases to them resulting in either a half break, full break or at least a retreating defence. It's a good play but it's too much for his body and he should never have to do it on his own. JR did it also. Its why these guys look like good players. Because they do the basics right. JR probably crabs laterally too much but that is usually when our forwards and team isnt rolling forward.

I'm telling you, whoever is coaching our forwards to play like they are, should be shot. I'd be paying 1M to a Cronk to come in and teach these guys how to move forward from each ruck play.

Pay has done his job as a stop-gap coach.
Time to hand over the reigns to a professional.

Not sure Pay will cut it as head coach anywhere else. Looks like he may go to discard pile or maybe assistant role. To remain as a head coach you need to either be good (results) or pretend to be good (good PR and media talker). Pay is neither.

There’s not many coaches on the market, thats the problem. It might change by seasons end or might not either. I discount most of the available  Griffith I’d have in a junior development category and in fact would chase him, but he probably wouldnt want the job, I wouldn’t let him near a locker room because the room divides around him. Toovey does appeal but then again so did Des.

Wildcard is the English coach just appointed Shaune Wane. He wants to coach NRL in the future but with coved f***in up the international scene the future might be here. Big risk but so is everyone else

#AttackingPlaysMatter

I only got to see the first half, so I can't comment on the whole match. There's 2 things that stood out to me - still struggling in attack - the other was how easy the Manly backs got through the Canterbury edges. Before I started watching it my gut feeling was Manly by 12 if Canterbury had their defence in order (maybe even taking it down to the last 10 mins), but if the defence had problems I expected a blow out if the prolific point scorers in Manly's backs had a field day. After seeing the final score, good grief, the less said from me the better. Now that they've had a run after the break, I'd like to see the defence improved against the Dragons, but can't expect miracles in attack.

Toovey is a very different personality to Des,,,

We could get Flangan, if the NRL allow it...

There is also Trent Barrett and a few other ex-NRL players with coaching experience...

First criteria, we need to believe the new coach is an upgrade from Pay... we can look beyond their win /loss ratio to player development, team selection. man management etc.

We can improve a lot in both areas, the left edge defence is terrible, we will not be competitive until we fix it.

Attack was summed up for me by the pass Cogger threw well over Meaney's head, Meaney was out of position, but Cogger should have looked before passing, and passed to the player. There wasn't a lot wrong with what we were trying to do, but the execution was abysmal..

Then we gave the ball to Tolman for no apparent reason , he got thumped and dropped it... Everything was wrong with that play..

The team is capable of a lot better than that, no excuses..

Also Kevvie Walters, Ben and Shane Walker,Jason Demetriou

While the Walker bothers and Demetriou are a gamble, they are a gamble with a lot of upside... in reality any coach is a gamble, if you are bold and gamble big, and you win, you win big, in the NRL winning little and getting acceptable results isn't history. being bold and winning big is what it is all about..

The club just needs to manage the cap so the coaching gamble doesn't put the next  coach in the same position as Pay.

The right coach isn't buying high priced talent, they are making high priced talent.. the kind of mess Pay inherited is not that common..

I'm leaning towards being bold, because the club needs to shake up its mindset... we need to be a leader, not a follower..

BS
Tolman would have put himself in the position to receive the ball no matter where we are on the field.
Im surprised he doesn't stand next to Lewis on the 5th in the hope JMK finds him with a pass......

I'd take Kevvie in a flash.
He can articulate 2 sentences together and looks like he devise a gameplan to compete in the modern game.
Only problem is that he talks too much.

But then again, with him as coach his son wouldn't be too far from joining us when his contract is up.
