Lewis and Wakeham are the best kickers in this team. Lewis is fine at 5/8th but as you say needs a dominant halfback in the team.

Irrespective if he ranked 2nd or 5th in the halves, his kicking is the clear reason he must be selected if fit.

"We dont make many metres in our sets of 6 so he is an absolute MUST in my opinion."
If thats how we pick a team we are destined to be losers.
5/8 plays one side of the ruck, Foran as 5/8 is a playmaker.
Wakeham would be the other side.

Lachy may be better in the centres as he was in the 20's and captained a pretty good team.
Andrew Johns has said he need to learn how to pass.
His kicking in the 2nd half yesterday was abysmal.

I liked him 2 years ago but he has regressed, whether the coaching or he has simply not gone up a step.

Not sure what you mean by 5/8 plays one side of the ruck , Foran etc
1. foran and lewis have played together and have played either side
2. when Lewis and wakeham play they can play left and right respectively
3. when foran and wakeman played they managed  right and left
4. either way Foran has to be forgotten about for the future\
5. MORE IMPORTANTLY why not the dominant half an the 5/8 play both sides - so e.g. wakeman always 1st receiver either side of the ruck passing to lewis either side of the field

Last 20 mins against the Cows with Armadillo and Wakeup was some of the more exciting footy our club has played in years.

Was it a fluke? Perhaps.

Why did it happen? They seemed to have a good combination from playing in the halves in the lower grades together.

Wakeham really stepped up and took ownership and control of a game in what remains a one off display.

No certainly that it would happen again, but if I'm coach we sit down and watch the video. See what you did here boys, I want that for 80 mins.

Maybe they are too young and can't do it, maybe they get found out in defence.

But after that Cows game Pay picked Lewis and Cogger in the halves which was a very dumb decision IMO.

Had Pay rolled the dice with the young guys, he might have got lucky.

I even think with Wakeham and Averillo in the havles, Marki's suggestion of Lewis at centre has merit.
His running game will not add much but his kicking game and defence will.
Short passes are no problem, he should be able to put his winger away.

If we are going this way, play Katoa off the bench in 14, Smith and DWZ on the wings.

Kotoa has a dig, runs fast and us fearless he often dents a well set defensive line, might do some damage running from dummy half.  We have sufficient  depth  to cover any injury.

You must have me mistaken as I never suggested Lewis at centre. He just doesnt run the ball enough and this facet of the game is where he lets himself down.

I also dont know why you think Katoa is a strong or good runner. He is a robot and hasn't made 1 run yet.

I dont like players who cant see what's in front of them and play accordingly. They are making Dylan Napa look like a Mensa prospect.

Chricton does run hard, it is the best part of his game. I don't know why I said Katoa, I meant Crichton.

Actually dogdoctor suggested Lewis at centre, he has played a lot in that position in the lower grades.
What he would offer is similar to Hoppa, but Hoppa has more impact running the ball.

If the halves and fullback  are a running threat, the overlap  / line break is created before the centre gets the ball.
What we are after is a good pass to the winger and an occasional grubber kick when there is no overlap

Chricton does have heart but lacks speed after 20m in the open and when chasing and is too small and suspect under the high ball e.g.. v saints -  bye bye him

Yeah he is too small for wing, that why I would try him at 14.

Barrett is maybe going to keep CHN happy, (actually I think $$$$ are a more logical explanation).

Maybe Barrett is going to improve our halves, and if the Turbos ever come off contract, they might come...

That is a few possible up sides and if it doesn't work out, we move on to Plan Y.... we still have one letter of the alphabet in reserve. :).

If you looked at the game v St George the Dogs were superior in the forwards..but we were outdone in the backs...on that basis I reckon Barrett may be okay though I still have grave reservations about his Laurie Daley style is it a question or an answer style inflections.

I'm not sure how Barrett will go as a coach, but I expect him to be better than Pay...

We make a decision then get on with recruitment and rebuilding the club...

2-3 years down the track, we review the situation, and decide on the next move...

St George we lost  it wen Foz had to stay off, the team when negative and tired to defend a lead, we also did kick for touch like we had been in the first half, the last 2 St George tries had a hefty slice of luck and bad handling under pressure from us..   a bit more composure and confidence, those mistakes don't happen..

Smarter game management, we kick a field goal earlier, or keep them pinned in their half..

Correct.
The game against the Dragons can be put down to bad luck.
Its not often you get 2 howler attempts to catch a ball and they result in direct tries. When you do, the team that concedes them usually loses.

The game intent was better and a step in the right direction

So with Paul Green now available, if we havent officially signed Barrett is it an option to consider?
He is a coach that had the Cowboys looking great afew years ago when they won and made the GF again off the back of Michael Morgan.
I think he has struggled with the ageing squad of the last few years and since losing JT to retirement.

Green's record shows why having little JT and big JT in your side is a good idea...

Big JT is an awesome player.... so I'm wondering why the Cows are not winning many games... we should have beat them,..

He might have been at the club too long, but apart from having the right players, I'm not seeing much outstanding coaching...

If big JT comes with him, I'm on board...

Jack Bird... we need to do our homework before signing him, and then sign the right contract if we do decide...

Bird and Foran if we sign both, one or both has to be 1 year with 1-2 year option in clubs favour - the price can go up for years 2 & 3...

SC mean you can't have expensive players sitting out the season, in spite of their talent, their injury history will count against  both and limit the offers they get.

I can't remember the last time I saw Bird on a field playing footy... seems like it was 2018 or even before that.

But here is how to play it, check out all medical injuries in relation to Bird, sign him to the right kind of contact (or not at all), year 1 low money, years 2 & 3 more money with option in the club favour..

Work out a rehab plan with the player which we both will stick to.. get his body right before putting him back on the field.... (assuming this is possible)

Benji Marshal, Big Mal and Thurston are examples of good players who bad a bad run with injuries for a few years, then rebuilt themselves or adapted to play out their career in fairly good shape... We can also find examples of guys retiring early due to injury, and medicine isn't perfect..

So it isn't a Yes or No to Bird .. we really need to do our homework and have a good plan..and if we are unsure about any aspect, that is a No.

Bad play

The last play of the game Lewis to Montoya was probably the wrong play and was badly executed....

But there was a element of luck in where the balled landed, the outcome from the error was maximum penalty..

The drop by Crichton off kick, was mostly just bad luck, they players mixed it up and Meaney probably should have gone for the kick.. but it landed in a tricky area... again the element of luck here was maximum penalty...

We should never have been in those positions....  but with Foran off the field... Lewis/Marshall found it hard to run the side...

I agree with Marki, we had good patches of play, and that has happened occasionally this year, but this really is a season where we make lots of time errors and pay the maximum price nearly every time.. some of that is just bad luck, a lot is due to not being good enough, lacking confidence or patience and not having enough resolve to defend errors.

Overall this game was one of the teams better performances, possibly the best game this year, round 1 V Parra was also good... a one off game counts for little.
