Indeed, Gombau before suggested the player, the Marquee-level one that is, had played around 200 games for Barcelona (Whether official league games, or, 'technically' all sorts of level games, total - who knows?). People keep suggesting players who haven't even played with Barca, nor come up through their youth system. I narrowed it down before ( In the other threads about it) and I suspect it could be players of that calibre (Or EVEN those players? :o) that he was talking about? Heck, I'll just re-post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luis_Garcia_Sanz (I suggested this guy would be a great Marquee a couple years ago. He's still only 34 and maybe ripe for picking as only playing in the Mexican league now)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabri_Garcia (This guy seems realistic, though he's 34)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Puigdollers (32, seems realistic, though game count including youth games would barely reach 200?)
Edit: ALL bar Puigdollers were there during the period of time Gombau was!'IF' I'm right then I can say 'I told you so' :p IF it's TRULY a 200 game Barca player, then people might be right when they speculated the likes of Abidal?! :o No matter who it is, a 200 game Barca player would be one, big, coup for the A-League! Hmmm Could it be.... DECO?! Edited by GloryPerth: 30/6/2013 02:13:15 AM

Deco is only in Brazil these days and his contract with Fluminense may be up, going by Wiki? He's 35 now and given the arrival of ADP and co, it's quite possible that Gombau may've lured him over here? His wage demands may rule him out, though we never know? From my researched list, Gabri Garcia both looks realistic but also a potentially fantastic get. Former midfield star with Barca (A good 200 games total with them too! If you include Domestic Cup and Euro league matches etc which Wiki doesn't) and 100 games with Ajax. Only in the Swiss league now, but his quality is undisputed. May not be 'the name' of some others, but surely a fantastic player? Interestingly, Gabri Garcia has experienced Australia before, via the Sydney 2000 Olympics - The Spanish football team won Gold at our games and Gabri was one of the goal scorers in that final against Cameroon (Which took the game to penalties)! And Luis Garcia surely many of you know from his Liverpool days atleast - He's INDEED 'a winger'! The more I read up on Gabri, the more it MUST be him. MUST BE! It just all aligns, his pedigree, fitting with Gombau's clues and time period Gombau was at Barca, his age range and relatively modest wage demands, though still Marquee level, his playing position/s ofcourse and league level he's based at now. It's surely him! http://english.ajax.nl/web/show/id=154814/contentid=47403Edited by GloryPerth: 30/6/2013 02:43:32 AM

Love the speculation guys but keep in mind there has been no suggestion that the 200 game Barca veteran who contacted Gombau is the same La Liga veteran midfielder who has been lined up as a marquee. They may well be one and the same but there seems be a few folks making that assumption without considering there are many, many other possibilities based on Petrillo and Gombau's statements regarding more recent developments. I'm happy to wait and see what transpires but I'm also pretty excited about a midfield featuring Dario, Chelo, Fabio and an experienced Spaniard pulling the strings. Will we have the defenders and forwards to match the midfield? How long will it take for the squad to adjust to new system? Big questions for me that will determine how successful we can be this season.

Sure, maybe a marquee in the sense that they'd need to fit him in outside the salary cap if the wage demands are a tad too high, but not as in an ADP-type marquee. Too many people (i.e. GloryPerth) jumping to conclusions about this one. Hell the announcement on Monday could be an extension of the Kappa deal for all we know.

Exciting times with all the speculation, but a solid foundation at the back would be a nice start for me:) It depends a bit on what formation he decides to play. We are a bit thin at RB and LB but I think there is a chance it is because we might be playing 3 at the back. I tried to find out how Kitchee played and it seems they played 3-4-3 or 3-5-2. So if we are just going with 3 at the back we have Fyfe, Boogaard, Golec, Mckain and Elsey. Malik as well in a pinch has played there but I would prefer him to play as a midfielder. Now I might be totally wrong about 3 at the back but I am not sure who is going to play RB. Also not sure where Cassio fits into plans if we do go to 3 at the back.

They did near the end of last season a 2 year front of shirt sponsor with solar shop they even had it on there shirts for a few games. Also the fact gumbi said that the signings will be made within the next few days about a week ago now. Not sure what else it could be about except a signing. Lets hope anyway Edited by liverpoolfan2010: 30/6/2013 07:55:51 PM

Love a good announcement of an announcement. There's always room for new sponsors but in line with my previous comment re: giving the membership drive a second wind, I'm going with player announcment and a more public push for the 10,000 member competition. I think it would be very important that any new signings are up to speed fitness wise and it would be good to get them settled in Adelaide before the next phase of pre season commences and Gombau arrives.

Quote:SA brewing company Coopers has secured the naming rights to Hindmarsh Stadium and is not concerned about having two Coopers Stadiums in Adelaide.
Norwood Oval, home of the SANFL's Redlegs, is also known as Coopers Stadium but national marketing director Cam Pearce did not believe this would confuse fans.
"Coopers Stadium at Hindmarsh is associated with soccer while Coopers Stadium at Norwood is linked to the Norwood Football Club in the SANFL," Pearce said.
Coopers has signed a five-year agreement - which includes exclusive pourage rights to the ground - with the stadium's new manager, Adelaide Entertainments Corporation.
Adelaide United, the major tenant of the stadium, does not benefit from the deal.
United lost Coopers as a major sponsor in June last year after the Football Federation of Australia signed up to a program banning alcohol sponsorship in sport. Coopers get rights to Hindmarsh Stadium

Wont be surprised if the big screen goes missing from the ground next.

The government own the stadium and have sold the stadium management rights to the private company that they own the AEC.

the stadium has been losing money under government control for years, the AEC is aiming to making it break even at the minimum. The more income they can get from sponsorship like naming rights and food and drinks the less rent they will have to charge AUFC. Along with the new carpark operating hopefully they won't have to up it to much more in the coming seasons.
Fact of life is that the club can't expect a free ride forever.

Fact of life is that the club can't expect a free ride forever. Two key things your missing there though. 1) the rent has gone up. So your argument on food, drink and sponsorship is null and void because everything is going up. 2) AUFC wanted the rights to the stadium, they wanted to take on those costs themselves so that they could be the ones attempting to break even on this. Instead the government did this deal behind the clubs back and denied them the chance to tender

Fact of life is that the club can't expect a free ride forever. Why not? The other code that can only get spectators from Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane to pump tourist dollars into our economy are getting a $535 million stadium for free. I thought our code was gaining more equality - but it seems that we're still the subject of discrimination. Edited by redcup: 1/7/2013 09:33:04 PM
