I commend the balance in people watching both CNN and Fox. But surely way easier simply to watch something like PBS and save yourself the trouble of needing to watch the other two? 😂

Yup. GOP will stonewall in the Senate and Biden will cop the blame, leading to the House going to GOP too.

They have to control the Senate first. Dems will end with 48 and Reps with 50 with two runoff elections in Georgia to come on Jan 5. If (big call) the Dems could win those then it suddenly becomes 50-50 with Harris having the tie-break vote.

This is the most American news I have digested in quite some time so not really on top of it all. Can't imagine it'll matter much this time next week.

As a general rule I find it's best to jump around anyway, even if the bias is obvious it gives you perspective about how certain people feel about issues and you can try to understand their views, however wrong they may appear to be.

Absolutely - as long as it is not a loon talking I'm always keen to hear a different point of view.

True. And North Carolina Senate is too close to call at the moment. I do highly doubt the Dems will get 2 Georgia Senate seats though.

Unlikely but hope the numbers are strong enough everywhere for Trump to give up on his court challenges.

Yeah must have misread that last night.

I'm reading Fox because if they're calling stuff not going Trump's way it's probably legit and not wishful thinking.

One thing for sure is polls and pollsters have had a shocker.

Polling is effectively dead.

Lots of reasons but I heard back in the 70s they'd get 50% of people answering the phone allowing themselves to be polled.

Now it's down to 2 or 3%.  So massive extrapolations from a tiny data pool.

Must say the Dems have done unbelievably well in their rigging of this election.

Not gaining control of the senate, losing seats in the legislature and just barely scraping in on the 4th day of counting.

Absolute genius.

They called Arizona and are getting shit for it from their viewers. Apparently Jared called Rupert Murdoch to try to get them to revert.

Arizona is a bit too early to call since there are still a sizeable amount of mail in ballots to count. Again, would be ironic if the USPS delays caused by Trump meant he loses.

Yang on CNN made is rank choice voting comment again. It’s a great way to fix 2 party politics. Hence it won’t pass.

The only people in america that would be worse off for ranked choice voting are people working for the two major parties. American citizens would benefit immensely but the major parties transparently don't give a shit.

Agree their system is broken but the major parties like it that way. Political reform needs to happen there now but nothing will change . Voter suppression is real .

Hopefully after this shit show the other states look into how Florida handled their vote count. Apparently they had heaps of mail-in ballots but managed to get through nearly the whole thing on election day.

That's what I mean, they should change there rules to follow what Florida did.

As a general rule I find it's best to jump around anyway, even if the bias is obvious it gives you perspective about how certain people feel about issues and you can try to understand their views, however wrong they may appear to be.

I agree with that completely. I'm definitely not up to speed with all the opinions going around in all the different news outlets/newspapers.

If I were formally studying US politics or if I had a job which involved it, then it would be important for me to read as widely as possible. But I'm not, so I just don't bother.

I find it too draining to watch Fox News. This has less to do with difference of opinion (on some, but not all, issues) and more to do with Fox News' style of journalism. It's the tabloidy way of reporting that I can't stand. In an Aussie context, I used to read The Australian (when we had print copies of it), as well as The Age, but I'd basically never read The Herald Sun.

I should say, even something such as PBS NewsHour isn't completely objective. It's impossible for any individual or any organisation to be completely objective. But I settle for the fact that they do interview a variety of experts (with different political opinions) and do their best to synchronise it all so as to allow viewers, themselves, to evaluate their opinions and the relevance of their facts. Judy Woodruff, the host, asks questions galore. And she leaves it to other experts to give opinions and back up those opinions with verifiable evidence. It's as balanced, as measured and as calm as any news source I've encountered in any country. It's also abundantly clear that Judy Woodruff genuinely cares for other people and that she regards it as her mission to report the news in fair and calm manner.

For sure. When Fox aren't singing from Trump's hymsheet, it's very unlikely to be wishful thinking.

I strongly recommend this. Only goes for eleven mins.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW5HzD3qpu4

It aired on PBS NewsHour a few hours back. Judy Woodruff interviewing Mark Shield and David Brooks. They try to make sense of all that has happened with this election. And the challenges and opportunities for the Democrats and for the Republicans after this election. Very interesting to hear them talk about the evolution of the Democrats from Franklin D Roosevelt, John F Kennedy, etc. in terms of policy and support base. Unsurprisingly, the demographics from which they draw support have shifted a good deal. And the Republicans have managed to tap into that.

Their discussion (and my own opinion) reinforces the following; it's also very important not to make generalisations about individuals based on demographics (gender, sexual orientation, race, age, education, religion, job, income, etc.). These things are really complex.

I reckon both political parties have become too absorbed by generalisations and symbolism. The Democrats have a lot of work to do.

I think my main complaint is that it's mostly not news. The host just invites on one of their mates and they have a whinge about something, competing over who can agree with the other the most fervently. The viewers agree with the host who agrees with the guest who agrees with the viewers, on and on and on. It makes their accusations of everyone else living in a bubble seem like projection.

Yeah that seemed like a bit of a performance piece from my side of the screen, but I've never walked a mile in his shoes.
