He could be the X factor the team needs up front.

Super intrigued to see how the roar line-up in round 1.

In an ideal world id love to see a Parsons, DWH and JOWIC front three, with SMAC behind them, But i assume Kudo will end up as the starting striker.

10th is surprising.  We certainly have goal scoring issues but I see us as solid midtable.  Bottom 3 seems a stretch.

Yep, the betting agencies were so far off the mark last season. Hopefully it's the same again this year

Last few seasons:

4th
9
6
3
3
6
1

missed the finals once in ten years .... so 10th is a bit harsh

BUT

betting agencies don’t just set odds based on where they think teams will finish, rather more important is where they want money to go to (or not go to).

I think solid mid table is a good estimate - do well/avoid injuries and it’s a 3rd place team possibly second ... not go so well and it’s 5,6 possibly 7th.

All depends on whether they can find goals?

This Parsons kid. Sounds exciting but worried it might go to his head being a young'n. Stardom requires hard work, teamwork, and diligence (diet, fitness, following coach instructions, discipline etc) to develop into a very good player. Hope he is up for it.

I have such a different feeling going into this season compared to last.

Last season we had a very solid pre-season with a relatively stable side playing out the games, and just a niggly doubt over our ability to defend against speed. We were scoring regularly across the team without a standout star, with a mental note that our forwards had not yet quite clicked.

This pre-season we have been playing around with lineups, and trying so many different players that I don't know what our run on team is going to be, and to be honest, I have no idea how well they are going to turn on from the starting whistle in game 1. It is funny, but I am not concerned about our attack (I think we have seen enough to show that we have strengthened that), and I am not concerned about our relatively stable backline, but I just have not seen the same group of players in consecutive games to know anything for sure as a whole team.

Last season I 'knew' how we would start, and how we would play as a team. Not talking about results - just what to expect from player to player as a member of a working unit.

This season I have only guesses about how we will play game 1 as a team, and my feeling is that we might actually be a little underdone - with players yet to bond and develop the combinations that I am sure will come as the season progresses.

I do not think we will end up at the bottom of the table like bookies and some posters feel, and I am excited for our prospects. I just have such a vague understanding of what we are going to see.

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

I’m expecting them to be a bit tough around the edges for the first month, until key players get familiar with each other.

Where we finish, up top or down towards the bottom, will depend on how well they fill that midfield anchor role - get that right and goals will follow. How many then all depends on our new Japanese striker

Until our two Japanese players are up to speed,we are a weaker team than last season.Hopefully they are good players .Otherwise it will be a long season.
Tenth seems harsh as a prediction. But assuming we can finish around sixth,we need six teams to be worse than us.
Candidates could be CCM,NJ,Mac,WSW,MV,PG
Teams who should do well are :SFC,MC,WU,AU,WP.
WSW ,MV and PG will be tough teams for sure.
MV and PG were very competitive in the ACL.
Robinson should get WSW going well.
Without some consistent scoring ,Roar look  to be in a real battle to get to sixth.

@overroared, Add to your comments that Millicic should do very well at MacArthur and there are not many weak teams. I don't get the hype over City and SFC, they are not that high above the pack. The champion could be one of 10 teams. Only CCM and NJ are not, I think, going to consistently pick up points through the season.
As you mention regarding our Japanese imports, how the  imports across the league go will determine the end of season placings.

Most teams have quality/skill/speed/flair in their attacking line-up this season (including us) so defensive effort will largely determine results.

I would say the teams with the 6 best defences (GA) will be the top 6, and while we may be a bit patchy to start the season our defence will end up good enough to make the 6. Aldred and Gillesphey are proven against everything except straight speed and somewhere between Hingert/Brown and our young defenders there is a balance just waiting to be found.

We need our two Japanese players to get on the field. Their touch and skill is not lost moving to a new team so they should be composed, accurate and effective from the start. We already move the ball well through traffic - just need more composure up front to capitalise on our many opportunities.

Same as most teams this season - no reason we can't make top 4 if our players combine properly.

I miss a season where every team plays every other team once before they face them a second time, and the table reflects where teams actually are rather than having multiple games in hand. One day...

When I wear their colours, I am the club.

Hopefully we have better finishing for the rest of the season. That game was really frustrating.

Maybe that Japanese forward will be the missing link. I was disappointed how we lost our composure after the red.

We just had very little to throw against five monsters who know how to defend standing in the box.

Hoping McDonald starting with Champness will provide more skill and cunning to break through a set defence. If our Japanese forward comes through that will be three threats on goal as opposed to threats 'round' goal.

Brown has really picked up but Hingert offers the team very little. He's a poorer crosser of the ball answers his control while moving attitude speed with the ball is atrocious. He's solid defensively but that's not enough in hus position. Think what Franjic offered. Time to to look for a more incisive player in that position.

Unfortunately Hingerts errant header lead to the goal.
Plus he made some other mistkes .Hopefully its a fitness issue.
We have some tough games coming up.
I hope we can get a win.The last thing we need is a start like last season.

A few observations from the first outing;
  • I'm a fan of DWH, but that miss of his was atrocious and cost us at least a draw.  As lolitsbigmic said, hopefully the Japanese striker has better finishing.
  • If Scotty Mac is going to scream and carry on like a 3 year when a player makes a poor decision, he might want to start burrying his chances.
  • charlied is right about our backs, Brown has (surprisingly) picked it up and Hingert seems to have dropped off considerably
  • Danzaki looks the goods
  • undecided on Akbari (gave away some silly fouls in dangerous positions)
  • If we can continue to play like we did last night, we will win more than we lose this year - even though we dropped the points, I was happy with most of the play.

DWH - Scotty should  have started, Dylan is an impact player and would have been much more dangerous in the latter stages with fresh legs. Disappointingly DWH looked gassed by the hour mark.

Scotty Mac - if he wants to bark at fellow players go for it. Too many people being prescious over this - any player who can’t take a serve shouldn’t be in a professional football environment

Brown - I’m scratching around for reasons why Brown shouldn’t start .... can’t find any. Hingert though, my cup is overflowing with reasons.

Danzaki - that was a brilliant debut 👏👏

Akbari - I assume he was playing the holding midfielder role in which case he did a really good job,

and agree, if we can keep playing like that we’ll finish well into the top 6.

Apparently just over 9,200 last night and, get this, tickets available for sale each game are 9,800 so the 11,500 capacity is misleading.

Brown was good for us last year and is just coming into his best years at 26 (forgot how young he is)

Hingert didn't have a great game but was hardly at fault for the goal,  it started with his header but there were at least 3 other opportunities for the move to be stopped, oShae was slow to react and out of position letting the ball get to jmac, aldred then made the wrong decision to rush out of the line creating the massive whole, then oShae didn't track his runner. A goal that should have been stiffled many times.

People have been ragging on dwh saying he shouldn't have started but he was at least passable on the whole, how Ingham has not come in for a blasting is beyond me. He was a statue defensively and completely anonymous in attack. He is part of the reason hingert looked exposed and gassed because there was absolutely no help in front of him from ingham.

I said it in preseason but our squad is unbalanced in the wide areas. Really parsons, dwh and champness are squad quality players in the second striker position that smac and danzaki take up. We don't have any actual width in attack. Oh what I would give to have a player like borrello again.

Ingham did have a poor game

I have never been a fan of him. So it's going to take a big increase in performance to convince me.

If we once back in the next few games I think we will be one of the best sides this season. I just have a terrible feeling that we going to be a side of miss opportunities that hard to beat but we will end down the bottom.

One things that external critics of the roar forget that before the covid break we where heading for 2nd place and the In form side in the competition.

We haven't loss really important players, our key players are at their peak age. The people we brought in are looking good. Akbari is doing that job of a DM well. Has some passing skills to split defences. He got a few fouls but a lot where stopping some dangerous plays in areas the ref are less likely to show the cheese. He put on a lot of strength and turning into that enforcer type. I think the O'Shea and Akbari pairing in the middle is going to be very fruitful.

Player ratings

Young - 7
Brown - 6
Aldred - 6
Gillesphey - 6
Hingert - 3 - worst player on the field
Akbari - 6
O'Shea - 7
Danzaki - 8 - superb debut
Ingham - 4
Champness - 6
DWH - 5 - should've put that goal away to give us the lead

Daley - 6
Parsons - 4
McDonald - 3 - should've scored late to get us a point

Overall good game where we dominated for large periods. Had at least 4 chances where we could have converted all of the lead up play into goals. We need a new Right Back - Hingert had possibly the worst game in a Roar jersey that I've seen in a while - gave him a 3 because he did some decent things at the end, but his passing & crossing were Capital League standard if that, maybe City League.
Probably should've won it, so good effort overall  against one of the fancied teams in the comp

Gotta mostly agree with you. I thort Danzaki was great and O'Shea too.
Scotty flew off at Hingert but too much for me but really that cross was pathetic....well it wasn't a cross...it just flew out and over with no accuracy, no correct weighting of the ball, and just know how scotty felt..it's like ffs what was that!!!!
thats gotta be fixed....Hingerts had long enuf...chance for Brindell South...let's see what he's got....
