Actually Pay and Baz are reasonably good a pinpointing what went wrong.

Baz has more options and quality in key spine positions.

We need more of the defensive grit we had last year.

Most disappointing for me was Hoppa's miss on Best, I think a centre should make that one-on-one stop, I don't expect Hoppa to make that kind of miss often.

For one other try Dietz was left posted with a low one on one on a prop. Many players miss that kind of tackle, but JMK, Wakeham and Lewis have at least a 50% success ratio.

Defense is easier to fix, a lot of it was bad reads, leaving a team mate posted in a one on one, and a lack of numbers and shoulders in tackles.

However we did also make some good try savers...

I'll be happy if we score onky  3-4 tries each week, provided we only concede 1 or 2.

One key difference is Lewis and Flanagan, Lewis will prevent opposition points, Flanagan might concede a few, but hopefully sets up more tries than he concedes. Ditto for Averillo

We had limited ball at the Newcastle end, in spite of that 3 tries and another couple of good opportunities.

Couldn’t agree more with everything you say except that defence isn’t that easy a fix. It’s hard work snd the boys need to dig a bit deeper.

But that game was a lot closer than the score line showed.

Fair point,

When I said easy to fix, I really ment that it is easy to identify what needs to be fixed.

Fixing it means players need to learn and adapt.

Fixing it means players need to learn and adapt.

The try Barnett scored before half time (which really hurt us) was a bad read by Flano. Hetherington had the ball player covered and you can see his reaction when Flano also went for him only to allow Barnett a free run at the tryline. He was pissed off.

Those kind of adjustments arent difficult to make. I'm sure Barrett will spot it on the video session and talk to Flano. All he needs to do is have confidence in his inside defender and only assist in the tackle once his inside defender has a hold of the player.

Dietz 1 on 1 with Saifiti running at him 5m from the line was always going to be difficult. Not many would stop that. He did in fact slow him.down by an ankle tackle but needed someone with him to stop him before the tryline.

Slippery conditions didnt help.
Newcastle scored afew tries from miss or poor tackles. We on the other hand scored tries from creating numbers out wide and cut out passes.

I'll wait to see us play in dry conditions to assess how we go defensively. One thing for sure is that our tackling isnt aggressive. It's very passive and allows opposition to make easy metres even after contact with our defenders. Hopefully we can change this through the year.

Not sure what you're smoking Steve, but Dman wants some...

I just rewatched the replay of that Saifiti 2nd try and there really wasn't much chance of stopping that try. Dietz shot out of the line to meet Saifiti 5m out but he was too big. It was a well rehearsed move as Saifiti was the second man running, with a decoy inside him, who if he also got the ball (3m out) would have scored also.

If that was the Dogs, we would send a single forward on a settler into the waiting defence who would bend him back and we'd see the slowest play the ball.

We have done that move in the past with Lichaa or JMK finding a 2nd runner in a 1 on 1 and we have also scored, but it's rare.

It just goes to show that if you keep pushing up in attack, you can alienate defenders and give yourself a chance to break the tackle.

Dietz' size disadvantage was there to see on that one, but you can hardly blame him for not trying.

Maybe, maybe not. To stop that try you needed to be prepared before the ball was played. And that meant numbering up tight in the middle with more space on the edges.

Hoppas miss on Best was worse as he was marked up squarer on Best, made contact at least 10m out and even with 3 other cover defenders, Best still scored.

Its round 1 with relatively match unfit players and the game played in wet conditions. I put it down to the players not adjusting to the conditions well enough.

In the wet, we should have been tighter in and around the middle and forced Knights to throw the risky passes around the edges. Lesson to be learnt.

Our defence was aggressive from what I saw. They were moving up quick at first. Putting on shots with plenty of momentum. Problem was when Newcastle got on the front foot and milked plenty of six agains.

Reading numbers is always going to be a struggle when your trying to get back the ten. One on one misses cost us and will only be fixed by replacing the poor defenderswith better players. Fixing dropped balls is as much a problem. Dry conditions should help.

I’m also looking forward to watching us in dry conditions and getting a fair go from the ref. We looked great in attack with very few opportunities. When Burton arrives we will be very dangerous. JAC can’t come soon enough. And we desperately need Thompson in the field.

We are still short two props and a hooker. But there is a lot of improvement in the current team and enough upside to enjoy the season.

I do think our attack looks much better already. Even Katoa looked to put on a few decent passes. Most players were pushing up in attack and defence. It was just the lack of possession and the dropped ball that beat us. If we hold into the ball and get a fair go by the ref we could knock over Penrith.

It wasnt so much dropped ball.... it was losing the ball in a tackle.

Not sure if Knights were intent on tackling us in the ribcage area but in slippery conditions it's a very smart play - and it worked.

Just before kickoff I was worried for DWZ who notoriously loses the ball in tackles but he became the least of the problem, while guys like Allan who are typically solid with ball just couldnt stop spilling it.

You can easily pinpoint afew reasons for why we lost so easily, so hopefully the team is better prepared in the wet next time.

It is an interesting season because we don't know what to expect.

We need some improvement in defence and posession or the Panthers could carve us up.

The difference this year is we have the potential to carve teams up, if we get a run of posession, score sone tries and keep completing.

If we can drag the Panthers into a close contest Averillo, Elliott and Cotric have the X-factor to make the match winning play. On the other side, the Panthers have 6-7 players with X-factor.

We can't win a high scoring shoot out, the Panthers have too many points in them.

One way we can win is a low scoring defensive dog fight, with our players delivering the match winning score.

Or we can win but getting a run of possession, taking our opportunities and holding on.

I am not expecting a win, but fans need to be optimistic.

But I do think this is a good time to play them, with them coming off a big win.

If the Panthers lead by 12 or more at any stage our chances of a win drop to close to zero.

I do think we have the team to come back from 12-18 down agianst bottom half of the table clubs.
Yes attack is a lot better, but Baz needs to get the defence up to scratch.

Any poor defenders will be well and truly exposed by the Panthers. If that happens time to consider changes.
I am mainly talking about Dietz, Katoa, Hoppa, Napa and DWZ here, the sum total of their trial and round 1 form is marginal.

Knights did get a try when DWZ knocked on in front of his own goal posts. In the 1st half I thought he might've been "cured" of the constant turnovers, but there it was...

If we get some possession we certainly look likely to score. Let’s hope we get a good run and it may be an enjoyable game.

Hoppa and DWZ certainly will be replaced next year. I just don’t know if they can be this year. We don’t look well stocked in the backs. Napa might be in reserves when Thompson comes back but once again not great depth. JMK will come in for one of Dietz no matter what unfortunately.

I just am looking forward to watching some entertaining footy. Next year I’ll be expecting more on the park and some very big signings

I watched the Panthers game, they were not quite as impressive as the score line suggests.

The Cows kept shooting themselves in both feet, reloading and doing it again.

Payten might be the first coach sacked this season, funky team selection and strategy, that was an abysmal failure.

They showed some grit in defence, but threw a lot of hopeless forward passes, that were honesty comical.
Felt stuffed up 2 kicks offs and the Panthers stuffed up 2-3 tries.

Cows almost succeeded in draging the Panthers down to their level.

Tols will probably score 3 tries in the 2nd half and get 3 try assists.

When interviewed after the match he will say ....."ha ha haaa .. Marki ... I was just winding you up"

I think Payten is on thin edge when he sticks the boot into arguably his best player and one of the best running forwards of the last 5 years.

He really shouldnt have gone public with his comments about Talmalolo. He could rub off badly with his players and create internal rift

Exactly if a coach isn't happy with a player, call him in for a frank one-on-one.

He selected 3 hookers, left the grub Maguire on the bench and benched big JT for a lot of minutes.

The Cows were ordinary, their attack was clunky, it was a poor performance, so it is a bad time for a coach to come out with ill consdered comments.

Big JT is a legend at the Cows he has been great for them, that is the worst game I've seen him play, by some margin and he didn't look happy.

Good coaching is keeping your players happy and motivated, all of them, but particularly the leaders.

The Roosters, Storm, Rabbits and Panthers already look the goods. Some of the other teams look like they could be set for a bad season. We need to climb a few rungs on the ladder, the opportunity is there, any win against a top 6 side is a bonus, but make sure we beat the bottom 4 every game.

Yes didn't trust his inside man.. that'll come with combination..

Avirillo didn't want to make that tackle 1st try next to post

A fundamental rule of man management. Never criticize or discipline in public.  Always be clear about the behaviour or performance that needs correcting and the standard required.  Anything less will lead to a relationship breakdown.

There won’t be a single change barring injury, and so there shouldn’t be, I’d be more worried if there was.

Changing the team after one round is essentially the coach second guessing himself over what he spent weeks planning.

I am expecting JMK back from injury in place of Dietz or Katoa, but that is a change due to previous injury.

He definitely will not be changing the halves, unless Lewis or Wakeham were simply stellar in reserve grade and suddenly looked like vastly improved players.

I have previously  listed a few players who were poor in the trial and poor in round 1, they need something better round 2 or round 3.

Napa and RFM were back from injury and needed the run.

Reserves had a good win, it really depends on whether any forwards had a great game and are pushing for NRL selection. At this stage Napa and RFM get to play themselves back into form in the NRL.

If a reserve grade player put 2 good performances back to back rounds 1 and 2, that will really help their chances. If there is an injury, they are the next guy picked. If an NRL player is below par rounds 1-2 and a reserve grader had 2 good games and seems to be going better, that is enough for the coach to reconsider.

Maybe some round 1 selections were close run anyway.

In some positions, fullback, halves, 2nd row, I think Baz seems to have made up his mind and the formula seems to be working. Starting props mostly working.

A good performance in round 2 will be enough for marginal players to cement a position. The coach will judge performances, not results.

By the time we got any ball 2nd half the petrol tank was close to empty.

The team did rally late.

Reserve grade had a good win, that means some players in that team can push for NRL selection.

Panthers are a stern test, the game may tell us a lot.

I am concered a few in our team might not be good enough, they need a few chances to prove me wrong.

Reserve grade players need to keep performing, IMO Baz will make the call on form when the time is right.
This is the sort of situation where any good young player in reserves knows they are a chance.

17 Rys Davies shared reserve grade dummy half with Jackson Topine.
He scored a try and seemed ok from the highlights.
