We desperately need big mobile forwards. We currently have forwards that are slow and big or mobile and small. If we could just sign somebody to partner Thompson!!!

All I ask is our current forwards run the ball up in pairs and look for quick PTB. I then ask the hooker to spot opportunity to run and fekking RUN.

In defence, run back with the ref and start to run forward to meet the offense ball carrier. If you arent meeting him 1-2m in front of the previous ruck, you are too slow.

Repeat for 80mins.
Then allow to simmer in glory.

I don’t think we have forwards that are fast and mobile enough to do that. I’ll try and explain why.
When a player makes a tackle they will either push the opposition player on their back resulting in a slow play the ball. Or they will not make a dominant tackle thus allowing the opposition player to fall forward or stay standing resulting in a fast play the ball. Our forwards start the game forcing slow play the balls due to being able to push opposition players back. But because of the lack of size Elliot, Jackson, Hethrington etc or speed Napa, Ogden etc. they start to fall off tackles and allow opposition packs to dominate.
The best counter for this is to have a couple of big mobile forwards like Atoni. He has all the attributes needed but just lacks the stamina. Players like him should hit the ball up and sap the energy of the opposition. Our Props don’t tire the opposition snd that plus what I said above is why after twenty of so minutes we aren’t able to spring up in defence.
We need a big fast mobile forward. Thompson will help but we need another.

I think signing Junior Paulo or Josh Papali would be a huge step in solving our problems. They are forward leaders that are big fast and mobile. I would love to see how big Ava from reserve grade would go but he lacks fitness and speed.

Mick, you've hit the nail on the head with this post.

They key aspect of it is you have noted that our players can only do it for about 15mins at start of game but cannot sustain it.

I dont think bringing in 1 or 2 forwards will solve the problem, although it will improve it for a while.

What we need is a mentality change and a change in the way we play and approach games.

Our coaching staff need to get our player stamina up and focus on getting our halves to react to game speed and momentum and control the speed based on our energy levels. That means kick to touch in some instances, or kick to corners or get repeat sets from dropouts.

The rule changes abolishing scrums have introduced new restrictions on how to manage fatigue.

We unfortunately couldnt handle the game last year and we are even more behind the 8 ball with this years rules.

As I've  said before, our 80s style doesn't cut it in the modern game. We can either flog the idea to death like we have been the last 15 years or we can adapt.

I have faith the Barrett understands this, and can adapt but will need a roster overhaul. I'm hoping Burton together with Flano and Dietz can become the game managers we need next year, but our forwards will need to change their style this year if we are to avoid the spoon and try to improve on last years performance.

These rule changes probably hurt our team more than any other.

I don’t think we can change much from a better mental approach. I agree that Burton will help but Dietz is an unknown quantity, I think we can do better, BSmith would add that go forward in attack and defence, he would help our line speed and hurt oppositions.

I believe when Thompson comes back we will look much better. He will improve our line speed for the reasons I mentioned earlier. But he needs some help.

What I’m saying is that you can’t polish a turd. And most of our forwards simply don’t have what it takes. Spencer Leinu was the exact forward type we needed. It’s why Barrett tried to sign him. TPJ was another that would make a perfect middle in the new game.

We need a forward like who I mentioned because our starting props are bench warmers.

I think we agree on where we have to get to. And Barrett seems to agree as well

The forwards yardage battle is one part of the game.
Completions are low errors are another.
Ditto attacking execution and kicking game.
Ditto defending your own line.

A team has to tick all 4 boxes to be in the game.

We have work to do in all 4 areas, but in particular defending our line is a non-negotiable essential, if a team can't do that they generally lose if the other team can do it.

Nail the full list, results are down to  x-factor players, game plan and luck.

Improving any area tends to improve all others, we need to improve in all areas as that is the fastest way forward.

If we can't defend our line we are a contender for the spoon, so that area needs the most attention.
It is ok to concede tries, but it is very bad to concede low effort soft tries.

In full agreement. I do think we will have the kicking and game management side covered with Burto and Flange. Maybe a hooker would help too

I also think if you are losing the yardage battle the likelihood of errors increase and the higher chance of defending your own line too much also increases.

I would rate winning the forward battle the most important. That should increase the chance of easy execution and good attacking kicking game while at the same time decreasing the errors and poor field position.

I have been wondering how we can beef up our forward pack after round 10 assuming all players other than RFM are available for selection.

Here is my suggestion.

8 Ava S.
9 Topine
10 Hethero
11 Jacko
12 Elliott
13. Tommo

14 JMK / Wakeham
15 Doorey
16 Odgen
17 Atoni.

Topine is a bigger body more of a backrower, he can certainly move to 2nd row or Lock when 14 comes on.
Doorey is an attacking 2nd rower, when he comes on Jacko can move to lock and Tommo to prop.

My thoughts are the starting line up has more size and high workrate defence.
The overall side has 5 props and 4 backrowers.
The abilty to cover backline injuries is via JMK / Wakeham moving to the halves and Averillo moving to the backs.

I would definitely like to see Wakeham get a shot dummy half, I think he is better than JMK in attack and defence, though JMK probably has a better running game, and great scramble defence.

I am happy for the coach to stick to his formula if he thinks it can work.
This season we want to try the players we do have, so we can work out who to sign.
In particular I want to give young players a shot.

Lewis is another player possibly deserving a chance, possibly at 9/14 centre or lock.
He doesn't have the leg speed / running game and he is prone to throwing poor passes.
He is better at passing on short-sides, that is something a 9 or centre can do.
His defence and kicking game are good.
But I can't think of an NRL team that uses a player like Lewis at 9/13.

Sometimes football instincts and a fast brain are better than fast legs. Lewis and Wakeham do have some smarts and instincts.

Impossible against even a modest attack. Player's back 10 cannot advance until ball clears the ruck. Attackers can hit the ball at speed virtually in line with DH. So what we're saying is the defenders from an almost standing start run 8 to 9 metres in the time an attacker at speed can run 2 or 3 metres.  That's why Tim Sheen's referred to "taking the easy metres" one out in a set of six.

We can then let go of JMK and Wakeham who have had plenty of time to go to the next level but simply havent.
