Yes credit where credit is due.

The middle suits Wardell and it suit Jacko, Topine should be one of the hooker options and it suits him.

Napa much improved, I know he had a disrupted preseason, so that is part of it.
Hopefully he stays energetic and motivated, no reason to go backwards from here.

Might suit Jacko but we get no attack out of him except the hit up.

wadell on last night’s form gives us scoring potential, and he defends better there. I’d start looking at Jacko bench middle unless he can rediscover his edge form days.

But having said that, it’s up to Wadell to do it again next week.

Jacko was running hard earlier in the season  and he does the defensive work.
Sometimes having the high workrate defender coming off the bench is a good option.

Wardwell still has the occasional loose carry and misses a few tackles, but no one is perfect.

I recommed fans watch the video of the after match reaction, from the coach, from the players including guys like Topine and Okunbour joining in.
You will notice Topine was late getting there, thst means he came a long way with a sore leg to join in.
If you have ever played sport and been involved in a win like that you know exactly what it means.
It cancels out years of disappointments.
If this team never wins a GF this is the game the boys will rember vividly in 20-30 years.
This is why you play sport and why you are a fan, you want the team to lift and put in a special performance.
After such a great win, many of the posts here are very negative.

So what do you all think of last night? Was it a fluke or do you think the players are beginning to understand one another and we will start to improve from here? I know one game doesn't constitute a season but it certainly gives us a reference point. I agree Waddell surprised me in the 13 role, Napa showed a bit more mongrel from what he has served up until now (and it certainly was evident) and even Hopoate had a bit of a dig. Flanagan, well the jury is still out on him, Cotric showed glimpses of his capabilities. I am not going to analyse the entire side as⁹  you all saw the same as I did, thought there is one other mention - Elliott, really Adam, I know you are passionate about the game and you play with heart but please leave all the tricky stuff to those that know how and when to display it. One last comment, wow the teams defence was truly Bulldog like especially the goal line defence.... well played.

Talk about pumping a blokes tyres up.

Dietz went ok sure, two or three 10m runs... exactly the sort you’ve criticised JMK as being ineffective before, didn’t fall of tackles but at the same time wasn’t exactly in the thick of it.

The best DH on the field last night was Katoa. Particularly his service which had a not insignificant effect on how well Thompson and Napa played particularly and the 50m team gains through the middle in general. He was hitting them where they liked, when they liked and picking the right one to hit crisp and fast. Great vision, awareness and technique.

And really some of his passing this year has been atrocious, his greatest weakness.

But last night one of the teams greatest asset.

Well the Mock still obviously has it...just as he jumped up and shouted Deitz-y you'e the Man...poor guy goes off injured.

ODF - Every rebuild needs a win like that, with no one expecting us to win, critics lining up to put the boot in and only the coach and the 18 players can change that.

We can certainly play smarter, but the effort was great.

Now the players have a bit more confidence and a lot more team spirit.
When we get some players back from injury/suspension we will have competition for places.

We are not going to win every week, but I want us to play like this every week.

IMO we are already seeing some signs that Baz is perhaps improving some players, Katoa is the guy I thinking about here.

The Meaney try off Wadell was great football. The sort of play I’ve been waiting for off a Barrett coached team and the sort of play you’d never see off a Pay coached team.

Time will give us more of those.

Just curious.... So last night when the Sharks fullback pass the ball over the sideline towards the end of the game, Flanagan gave him a pat (Cam Munster style) and we got penalised??

Is there a new rule or something

I don't disagree. In fact I praised Katoa in posts during the game.

Halfway through that 2nd half, I wanted Katoa back out there in place of Flanagan and Dietz at hooker and towards the end when Flano was not completing 5th tackles efficiently, I wanted Wakeham on too.

How the fvck do the video refs keep getting the obvious so wrong, and be so sure of things that aren’t obvious...
I think most people can cop a ref getting some stuff wrong with the speed of the game, but for vid refs to be as poor as they is beyond acceptable...

Watch it again and dont underestimate the decoy from Adam Elliott who should be credited for that try.

It was perfect execution of the decoy, yes, that play you dont like.

Renouf Atoni 3rd man in causing a melee I believe is what the penalty was given for.

Renouf Atoni 3rd man in causing a melee I believe is what the penalty was given for.

I think it was against Flano, but overall there wasn't much in the incident, play on 9 times out of 10.

We didn't get much ball in the 2nd half but I noticed a few simple dropped balls of passes from your man Dietz.
Mostly that is on the receiver,  but his passes were a bit slow and loopy, that was part of the drops and also part of why we made fewer yards. The big part was Tommo and Napa getting tired, seafood salad a bit off the pace the run will help him.

Dietz was good in defence, as we didn't get much ball he didn't have many opportunities to run.
We looked better first half with all of the ball than the Sharks did 2nd half.

Elliott's first half kick was the dumb play of the day, run the ball we probably score and Baz gets to sit down for some of the 2nd half.

I put the 2nd half fade out mostly down to a lack of ball. Flanagan's kicking game still needs to improve. We could have managed the 2nd half bettet.

I watched the game on my phone but am looking forward to watching it on the tv today. That way I can appreciate it.

I’ll throw out the negative comment first. The Sharks blew at least three try’s, probably more. A better team eats us easily.

But it’s great to see is go forward. Making huge meters most sets and scrambling well in defence. Thompson makes a huge difference and probably helps us win in round one. We need more like him.

Also watching the press conference certainly changed my opinion of Baz. I now understand where he is coming from and that he does have a strategy going forward. When he responded to the reporter who mentioned something about the club needing a long rebuild and that coaches only had a short life time at clubs. He said he was here for the long haul and that it would it change no matter his personal future as a coach. I’m paraphrasing terribly. It showed he has what it takes to stick with us.

Well done to the team and to Baz. Hope they are smashing the cans like I am

While they blew 3-5 tries, we had bodies in the frame, and that helped force the errors.

We blew 1-2 ourselves.

On that form we at least jag the odd game here and there.
Get a few players back and get a bit more confidence and execution we may get our win percentage up to 50%.

Some teams are going to hit the wall back end of the season after SOO, this season some teams will not handle the pace and intensity.

I'm backing us to keep improving, we will not have a great ladder position, but we can lay down a great base for 2022.

Equally there is lots we can improve, and a successful season depends on what improvements we can make.

To be honest we shouldn’t be too worried about the results this year. It’s about building the foundations. The players that will be here long term need to know the style of play that Barrett wants. And all the players involved this year need to attempt to play that style.

Now, as a fan, that simply isn’t possible for most, including myself. Emotion gets involved and I just want us to win. But the emotion Baz is showing helps most fans stick with him. It may be a tough couple of years, but once he gets the right team he most likely succeeds.

Yeah his plan is to change the way the team plays even if that means he may not be coach to see the fruits (if the board loses their patience)

Like I said a week or 2 ago.... he is at the crossroads and can choose to either stick to his plan and suffer some pain along the way, or give in and play to the team's strengths in order to win afew games keeep the vultures at bay but not improve the team to become a contender.

Listening to his press conferences and with his continued support of Flanagan, you get the impression he is sticking to his plan - no matter what. Which is probably the best thing he can do, although it will test our patience as fans

By mid and late season, we really need Flanagans game to improve and become NRL standard.

At the moment, Averillo and even Katoa are schooling him. Lewis and Wakeham are also better kickers.

We cant be at end if season and not have this fixed.

The only fans that will prove to be impatient are the ones that want all the players sacked every loss and a new player bought every week. If you cared to listen to TBaz last night he spelt his plan out very clearly. And he said that he could chop and change players and buy new players to give us some success but in three years time we will be right back to where we are right now. He wants to build a team that will carry success well onto the future, he wants to create a dynasty and he is very passionate about succeeding in his plans. TBaz does not want short term fixes or band-aid solutions so just chill and watch this space.

I think he was refering to teams like the Tigers or the back end if the Des era.

Desperate clubs trying to solve the problem with the cheque book signing one quick fix after snother with no long term plan. The cap ends up a mess and they end up right back at square one.

The other way is build the team slowly manage the cap have a plan and cop some short term pain for long term gain. Sometimes fans are impatient, no one likes losing, but the club has to have a plan and stick to it.

Would be interesting to see what viewer numbers are like for first and second halves of games this season..
I’d reckon there are plenty of welded on league fans turning of at half time or 20 to go in games that used to watch every minute...

Cant be good for the future of the game $$$ wise...

But these corporate types running the game are exactly like politicians and have no interest in long term success, it’s all about the next ratings figures/election...
